View Full Version : Wedding venue and reception suggestions - post in here
Hi there, i am have just began to plan our wedding for July 2013 and i'm looking for a suitable venue. We will be having 210 day guests and an extra 60 at night and want a marquee reception- in south yorkshire or derbyshire (chesterfield end) Does anyone know of any places that would allow a marquee big enough for our guests and also any carterers or marquee hiring companies to recommend? We want a "family style" catering too so if anyone has had this or been to a wedding with this type of dining it would be great to hear how it was!
Thanks

they may be able to help they have grounds that will hold a marquee.
& you can do your own catering if required.

Anyone got married or been to wedding reception at Firth Court at Sheffield Uni?
One of our favourite venues of the year was Beechenhill Farm. Absolutely gorgeous rural venue. You can see some pics on our blog http://www.timmcleasby.co.uk/lucy-and-jons-beechenhill-farm-wedding/ or their website at http://www.beechenhill.co.uk/events.asp
A really unique venue with a lovely natural feel to the place :)
Another amazing venue is Weddings and Wellies - Low Farm, Norristhorpe.

We supplied our photo booth for a wedding at Firth Court. It was a lovely venue, very grand!! The staff were really lovely too. :)
Ghostrider 04-01-2012, 09:44 Booked the Leopold hotel for our wedding next August. Can't wait, its fab value too. £4k all in package including-ceremony and wedding breakfast for 60, plenty of drink and catered evening do for 90. As well as usual bits and bobs-cake stand, table cloths etc. They are so flexible too, as in you don't have to stick to the stuff on the package but they will still stick to the budget (eg-we can have beer instead of wine, afternoon tea instead of sit down meal etc). Also can bring our own crockery and decoration (which is perfect as we are having a 'vintage' theme).
So anyone else had a/been to a do there (please keep it to yourself if it's a bad experience or I will worry all year!)
On the other hand we also visited to cutlers hall-amazingly rubbish service. When we walked in the reception fella shouted 'OOOYYY HAZEL ITS FOR YOU' then we were shown round and told all the things we couldn't have and how we HAD to have things set up. Didn't ask one question about what we wanted!
I have been the dj for a few parties & weddings at the leopold hotel.
Nice venue, the catering is excellent - cant fault the staff either.
claiireee 06-01-2012, 07:18 I looked at Beechenhill Farm and agree its beautiful, the downside was they "don't do disco", which is a shame as we wanted a dance and cover bands aren't our thing. We had our heart set on Weddings and Wellies ages ago, but it was just too expensive by the time you add extras i.e you can't get married there.
Another place that looked lovely, but didn't work for us number wise, was Stoop Farm
CeCeSongz 10-01-2012, 18:10 I have been looking at Cressbrook hall, lovely:love::love: place has anyone had a wedding at this venue. I dont think they can accomodate my numbers. I am looking at about 100 -150.
retrorainbow 27-01-2012, 18:46 Hello everyone,
Myself and my fiance are getting married in Dore and are struggling to find reception venues. We don't have much money but a lot of guests. We're starting to look at pubs for possible reception ideas and wondered if anyone had any recommendations. Gonna be roughly 90 for meal and then double for evening do. Budget is around £5000. Comments would be much appreciated
justcustard 31-01-2012, 09:49 Hi Claiiree.
Have you considered Wood Lane countryside Centre. We are getting married their this year. It's a converted barn with a large greed space outside but in the suburb of Stannington, Sheffield.
We fell in love with the place on visiting. Booked out this year but worth considering if your getting wed next year.
I covered a wedding at East Lodge Country house in the peaks last summer that was amazing and I really recommend them. It was small and intimate as they book out the entire venue for each wedding (capacity circa 50), I think, and it was really enjoyable for the couple.
You can read the blog on my site or visit the venue directly.
claiireee 09-02-2012, 17:54 Just Custard - that's where we're getting married :)
I definately recommend the Old Rectory at Handsworth, its next to a beautiful church and has lovely function rooms you can hire all the rooms in one and even get married there it is a beautiful place and the food is at a very high standard, very good indeed, it is a reasonable price and it also has complete packages you can get as well, well worth the money.
justcustard 13-02-2012, 08:28 Claiireee Were getting Marred on the 14th July this year. We've only been engaged since new years day but the venue had a recent cancellation that slotted in with our need for a summer wedding so we just went for it.
My partner in a School teacher and as its half term now we're having a week of wedding planning. Which is why I've been pupping up on the forums of late with lots of questions.
How about you. When is the big day?
nuffsaid 13-02-2012, 14:49 Ponds Forge Skyline Suite. Absolutely beautiful place, food and catering managers Sue and Mark. Get in touch with them. They will even give you a taster session of the food. When they finish decorating the venue for the reception it is so classy, beautiful and elegant. Had my daughters wedding reception there last September. Spot on. Give them a call at Ponds Forge. Sue is great, she will walk you through every eventuality.
*Peaches* 13-02-2012, 15:38 I've just emailed them for a brochure Nuffsaid
claiireee 13-02-2012, 20:59 Ooh all sounds good, my partner is a teacher too! You'll have to let me know how you get on with your planning :) We're not getting married until August next year. It's quite late in terms of school holidays, but we booked Woodlane in October last year, 2012 was full and ours was the only weekend left in the summer holidays 2013. It was crazy! Ive done quite a bit of planning so far, so send me a PM if theres anything I might be anle to help you with. Just seen your post on burgers, could you speak to a van that pops up around town or do you want something a big less greasy?
justcustard 24-02-2012, 16:38 Wow it just goes to show how lucky myself and my partner were at getting hold of the venue at such short notice. I may well get in touch for a tip or two if we come a cropper in our planning. In return I'm happy to drop you any tips and thought that cross our minds after the event that may help in your preparation.
Burger wise yep a van from around town would be perfect. In fact the only two leads I have are from people tipping me off about bacon butty vans from outside of their work.
nickfinn 24-03-2012, 09:04 Have you considered hog roast instead of/as well as a burger van? Just a thought. Went to a wedding back in October with one and was great!
I agree with nickfinn that hog roasts are great at weddings, but if you want a burger van have a look at KK Catering (http://www.kkcatering.co.uk) . They have been used a lot at our venue and guests have always been very pleased with the service.
LOMAS HALL at stannington, church street, nice little old church around the corner too to get married in, Lomas hall is a big hall that you can decorate up, provide tables and seating, big grassy land outside for kids to play on and good free parking.
Bar licence comes from a local bar /landlord and you do all your own self catering. costs about 500-600 pounds for the day, They do half a day too... well it use to.
The stage you can have your own group on we had "http://www.rogerthebadger.com" dance band, brilliant, a good allrounder i would say and especially if you are on a budget.
schong2111 10-04-2012, 07:52 Has anyone been to a ceremony/had theirs at Weston Park Bandstand?
So far this is mine & my partners favourite venue and we don't think we're going to find anything in Sheffield that tops it for us. I've seen some beautiful pictures from ceremonies there.
slightypar 11-04-2012, 14:15 Has anyone ever had their wedding reception at the Wig and Pen in town? How was it?
