I have two gorgeous African Snails - Snaily and Waily (named by the children!). We've had them 7 months.
Apparently (as they are almost a year old) they could breed at any minute (oh dear!).
Does anyone have any knowledge about these adorable creatures?

I've been told that we ought to seperate or re-home one to avoid having hundreds.

Any suggestions?

No point really they can fertilise themselves as they are asexual they dont need another to reproduce. I do know that some of the reptile shops may give you a few pence each for them as they only really sell for about £1 each in some shops as they can be fed to lizards.

not sure I like the idea of feeding Snaily and Waily's babies to lizards!!! - but I guess they have to eat something! - thanks.

saw them on ebay once, but had to be advertised as a food item even though they were pets to get around ebay rules. very good post cos it gave full care guide in the listing!

actually snails are hermaphrodites and they must have two to breed so separating them should work unless they have mated already. you can freeze the eggs or destroy them to stop yourself being overrun
id have a couple if they breed lol , will you let me know if they do reproduce please

You have to advertise them as food otherwise it's against ebay rules.

I'm afraid you might have trouble finding homes for any of the babies if they are Fulicas.

Snails are hermaphrodites so any two of the same sort can mate. You can also get crosses.
Some snails like fulicass, rodatzis, immaculatas lay 100's of eggs while others like Margies just lay 5 or 6 and the Megas I had imported only lay 2 or 3. Most snail owners freeze any eggs they don't want as soon as they find them, We have found this to be the best way of kulling them as it is against the law to release them into the countryside. I can't believe there are still people in this country that eat them, I've rescued loads of tigers and margies over the years from a bloke on a market stall in London who sells them for meat:gag:

I can put you in touch with a couple of good groups if you would like?

Here are a few of my lot ..

My sister had some giant Snails, she lived in London and a guy she worked with offered her quite a bit of money for their snails babies to eat them! She too was distraught with the idea and managed to find homes for them - there were only a few though not 100's

There were probably Margies or possibly Tigers then Sue as those are the biggest ones you can get and the only ones with a bit of meat on them. It's so cruel and many of the ones on the market stall I used to go to were dead or dying so would probably give those that planned to eat them a gippy tummy anyway which is what they deserve imo.

Most of my babies went here: http://www.bulliththorn.co.uk/rarebreed.htm

...and no, not for chicken feed:P

Speedy and Lazy lol, just Lazy was not lazy at all, just dead :(
To dispose of eggs, we were advised to put them in the airing cupboard which dried them up. It worked but I always felt bad doing it. They are fab pets and I used to spend ages holding and watching them!
