I am getting married in 2008 and haven't got a clue where to start,
so can anyone recomend a good wedding florist, that isn't too expensive also i dont mind something a little bit different.

I am also after wedding cars, i am looking for the more old fashioned, classic types, so if anyone can recomend some it would be brill.

I used these for cars on my wedding day

www.cloudnineclassicweddings.co.uk

click to the right of the page where it says wedding cars and you can look through the different cars. I had Kirby for myself and delphine for my bridesmaids.

Without hesitation I'd recommend Gill at Plantology (Division St) as she did such a fantastic job of my wedding flowers. She was really helpful and imaginative when I went for the consultation. I always use her for any other flowers I need because they are always stunning and I feel like I get good value for money with her bouquets.

We were supposed to having a friend of the family do our flowers but she can't make the date of our wedding, can anyone recommended a florist? Preferably someone who's not too expensive. We're thinking of maybe getting the flowers for the dinner tables ourselves from a wholesaler, does anyone know where one is?

Hi there - we're using Monia Hewitt florists in Hillsborough and have been dealing with Helen there - we've found them pretty reasonable and incredibly helpful - might be worth a try.

There have been threads previously about flower wholesalers but not on this particular bit of the forum - do a search and see if you can find the threads - think the wholesalers are near Costco or out that way.

I am doing all of the flowers for my wedding (eeek) by getting them from a wholesaler and just givin' it a go! :P
There is a flower market in sheffield by the parkway. I have not been before, but I started a thread a little while ago on it and everyone was very helpful. Try searching for Sheffield Flower Market.

One of the main things people said is that you have to get there at the crack of dawn!!

That's great thanks for all your help, I'll give them a go. I think wholesalers for the table decorations will be the way forward, with a florists for the bouquet and church

twinky1

I think you may find that unless you are a retailer/florist that the flowers won't be a great deal cheaper than the supermarket as you obviously have to buy in wraps and not individual bunches or flowers.

is anyone else planning to do their own flowers for their wedding? I am, and so far i've sorted out where to buy them wholesale from, but does anyone have any ideas/tips about how to do the flower arranging??
Im hoping it to be quite easy, but i suspect i'll probably be wrong there, and end up panicking two days before the wedding with a kitchen full of flowers that I cant do anything with! :help:

fluffystuff

I am doing my own flowers too. I used to be a florist so I know how to do them, I am worrying about how much time it will take the day before the big day, when ideally I would like to be taking it easy.

I would suggest you get some books on the subject from the library, and do a trial run. Take a look at some websites and decide well in advance what you are going to do.There is nothing worse than panicing at the last minute.

Are you getting yours from the flower market on the Parkway btw?

Monks
11-04-2007, 02:05 PM
hi fluffystuff thanks, yes I am planning to get them from the flower market. Would you advise this? Im hoping that they are quite cheap, im mainly going for white and red roses.
I dont drive so its not all that easy for me to go down and do a trial run. Was just going to go down three days before :(

fluffystuff
11-04-2007, 02:23 PM
For the trial run, I was meaning to practice what arrangements you are going to do. I have done a practice of one of the table decorations and one bridesmaids bouquet so I know how many roses etc will be needed for the whole lot.

As for the flower market I have never been so I cannot comment. There have been a few recommendations on here though, so it should be fine. I keep meaning to to get up early one morning and have a look, but I haven't managed to do that yet.

I will let you know if I do though

Just a reminder.

I have been to two weddings this year and on both occassions we had real problems pinning the flowers, even with the big pins provided. I would ensure that you have a plentiful supply of pins available, esp for bestman and grooms; it really was a nightmare.

To be honest, i jsut spoke to the flowerwholesaler about the estimated number of flowers needed, my mum actually stood there and counted how many individual flowers on a bunch of chrysanths to work out how many bunches we'd need. That and a bit of calculation (over estimate on EVERYTHING) about how many roses i wanted in my bouquet (look at pics and count the fowers in the ones you like)
Have a good idea in your head about jsut how you wnat everything to look and it should all work out!

I didn't do the test run (probably should have, but hey!) and it all worked out perfectly!

Chloe, or anyone else who is looking for flowers, I make wedding arrangements, - bouquets, button holes, or for displays for your venue - and can also give you some top tips about using the wholesalers.

They are off the parkway, go past Costco on your right and to the end. Open til about 9.30 - 10ish so not too hideous, though the best stuff goes early. None of the prices are marked up, so you have to ask, and it will depend on the time of year as to what is available and how much.
There is also a sundries wholesaler next door where you can get vases and ribbon and the bits and bobs to make favours, as well as silk flowers.

Drop me a note if I can help at all or you need any advice

Would happily recommend Monica F Hewitt Florists, their pure enthustaim for all things petally was brilliant. Were able to advise what was in season in NOVEMBER, didn't I'd have much choice lol, and work to a restricted budget. Never felt like anyone was looking down their noses as unfortunatley was the case in some of the other florists we visited.

Have been to the wholesalers at the Parkway market this morning. Got there at 5.30am:o, but was pleasantly surprised when I got there. There was so much choice and compared to florist prices was soooo cheap. I spent £90 altogether, and got for my money 120 roses (nice big ones, not the 10 for £3 supermarket type) 6 wraps of chrysanths, greenery, loads of spray carnations, gerberas and lisianthas. This has to be the bargain buy of the whole wedding so far. :D:D

I know you are all probally gonna think that because this is coming from a florist that i would say this, but doing your own wedding flowers is a very major task. I had been doing Floristy for 2 years before i even attempted a wedding for one of my best freinds.
Weddings are stressfull at the best of times but taking on that ammount of work before your big day is very commendable. I can understand that cost can be a major factor but if you find a good florist then they will work to your bugget and help you to acheive the look you were after but also take the pressure off you and add detail which you would not even consider.
You will not pay much more for your flowers at the market than you would do in a shop if you are buying in quantity as you are not trade.
conditioning of the flowers that a florist will do for you will also save you alot of time and money as if not done correctly esp with stems like roses you will loose some of your stems, and also keep your hands nice for the big day.
The best thing i can suggets is that you find a freind or a family member that has a bit of experience or even speak to a florist and get some advice. There is a reason that people have intense training for this trade.

Not sure if this is useful info or not, but it helped us out emmensly. We got married 4 weeks ago and starting planning a year before that. Didn't have a clue what to do, so opened the Yellow Pages for ideas.

They have a full section on wedding planning and more importantly they have a tick-list of what needs doing and by when.

We tore it out and stuck it to our fridge. It was a god send. Obviously it can't recommend who to use for each area, but it helps you get everything organised.

Hi there

Ive got all my flowers from the flower market - they are just off the parkway, if you head towards Costco they are just a bit further on down the road.

If doing fresh flowers I think they are open from some silly time in a morning but if having silk flowers the shop where I got mine you dont have to be a trade customer and they are open about 6am to 2/3pm I think. They sell everything from the oasis the flowers/ribbons etc.

If having silk, poss also try JTF near the Big W, they have a good selection of silk flower displays and other stuff for weddings upstairs, you do need to be a member though.

Hi all, started to think about flowers for my wedding in december. Do u think i should use real or silk? Im on a limited budget so i imagine silk is cheaper but when i mentioned it to OH he looked horrified! I have seen some lovely arrangements on ebay but then theres the risk factor that they might look horrible compared to pics put up so i really dont know what to do- any help would be great please!

medusa
10-01-2008, 09:36 PM
I took the least expensive option of them all- lots and lots of inexpensive real flowers.

I had approximately 10,000 daffodils and 2,000 irises (very dark blue Professor Blauw ones) at their peak season since I got married at the end of February. I got married in blue with everything else in dark blue velvet and gold brocade so it matched beautifully.

If it has to be lilies and roses then they will cost a lot in December, but I'm sure if you talk to your florist about the flowers that are most plentiful and easy to obtain then you'll find something that takes your fancy and can be made up quite reasonably.

An alternative is to buy lots of bulbs yourself and force them ready for flowering in December, but that may be a lot of work and you'll probably need a spare fridge to make a fake 'winter' to force them.

I'm in the process of growing all my own sweetpea for my wedding apart from the hard work it is really cheap. we are having our bouqets and church flowers done by a florist but it has to be real flowers for me.

XmarblezX
10-01-2008, 09:48 PM
Are real flowers cheaper than silk then? I have no idea what flowers i want as im not a flower person really but i like the idea of some white flowers as main colour with maybe black mini roses an diamante with pink pearls seen one on ebay that is lovely and colours think its called a posy! I gonna feel a right berk when i go in florists haha

medusa
10-01-2008, 09:52 PM
Some real flowers are less expensive than some silk ones. That's part of the problem- if you have white then there are loads to choose from so you could probably find some lovely fresh ones that aren't expensive, but black roses are very very specific and the florist will have to order them specifically for you and pay the market price for them, which could be anything from a couple of pounds a stem upwards.

Have a look i some wedding magazines pick out some you like and take them to the florist, a brides bouqet is from around £50 -£100 pounds you can then have as little or as many as you want. If your not that keen on flowers you could have floating candles with petals as centre pieces.

My wedding is at a hotel so not really thought about decorating that as yet. When should i start growing my own if i was to do that option? I have even thought about going to a florist the day b4 wedding and buying lots of flowers that take my fancy and making my own and my bridesmaids bouquets! Dont know it that sounds stupid tho!

I suppose i could use black and pink pearls that would be cheap then just use white flowers. Im not having flowers as centre pieces but still undecided on specific details was thinking tall glass vases with clear fairy lights an some other sort of decoration inside, im very unorganised at this time lol

Not at all, my mum did my best friends wedding flowers, my advice would be steer clear of buying at the florist she went straight to the flower market and even bought lots of lilies from tescos as the turned out to be about a 1/4 of the cost of the florist. She does have a really good eye though and she was very stresed out, it took her 2 days before the wedding getting them all done so my advice would be try and get some one to help its harder than it looks.
For growing them, it depends what you want, you can get info on most things if you google them.

You've still got ages to sort things out though- you're only unorganised if you are saying things like this 6 weeks before the day!

My bouquet was £40 and when my sister married 4 years ago she chose a posy of seasonal flowers for £35. I'm sure that there are lots of people prepared to recommend their local florists for the making up if you don't feel able to do it yourself.

I ahve got a silk bouquet with crystals and gold threading, got it off ebay at a fraction of the shop prices, I am having Ostrich feathers as the table centre pieces.

I had four 4 foot coloums made and painted and glittered them up, then sprayed 4 plastic planters, I am going to buy some oasis and have big displays of fresh flowers that I am going to buy the day before. Also got some bay trees, tall candlesticks with four candles in each and fairy lights all over the place.

I am not sure which colour flowers but probably I will stick to white and some greenery, anyone got any idea on who is best to go to in the market ?

I had soft touch lillys for my wedding, they weren't silk or plastic but had a lovely soft feel to them. Got 80 of them for £30 of ebay, bought some grasses, leaves etc and my mum made everything for me.

I was on a budget, time was against me and I was getting married 300 miles away so i did'nt want to bring all the flowers with me nor get someone local to make them for me.

Its a great idea, I've still got my flowers in a box and its something else to show the children (when they appear)

Good luck

We are getting married in August this year and had a tight budget for the flowers for a big venue. I managed to find a really good florist who got me everything I wanted (including a lot of expensive exotic flowers) for my budget. We got 10 x tall table arrangements with exotic flowers and vases to keep, bridal bouquet, 5 bridemaid bouquets, 11 button holes and corsages and a flower arrangement for the signing table all for less than £600. If you want cheaper flowers it would be much less than this too.

If you want her details then pm me, I will be more than happy to pass on her details.

If you do want to use a florist you just need to give them a basic idea of colour and style of the flowers you would like, they will advise you on the best flowers for that season and your budget thats what you are paying them for after all :) . The shape of the bouquet can tie in with your dress, for example if you've got loads of lovely detail on the front of the dress you don't want to go hiding it with a long trailing bouquet so stick to a round hand-tied posy. There are some really stylish, effective silk flowers around and you will need to use silk if you want true black for some of your flowers. Good luck I'm sure it will be georgeous.

Do you know what colours you are having for your bridesmaids? You could match the silk ribbon round your posies and in the pearls in the bouquet to your bridesmaids colours. What are the flowers that you have seen on E Bay like? £100 sounds a lot for something you wont get to see up close until you've paid for it. I made my own wedding flowers and put the money we saved towards the honeymoon, its your day, do what feels right for you and your OH.

I'm going to be learning how to make all styles of wedding flowers in Febuary at Sheffield College. I'm thinking of offering a silk flower floristry service after that, do you think anyone would be interested ?

My bridesmaids are wearing plain black dresses with hints of pink and ivory, im doing opposite ivory dress with hints of pink and black, maybe in the flowers. The ones on ebay are plain white flowers as main colour with little diamantes in the centre of each flower, then one has tiny black diamante ribbons in it, was thinking the plain white one i could put pink headpins in to tie it all together. They are little posies as dont want anything big. There was a lady on here who bought all the materials frm ebay and made them herself, she sent me pics and they were gorgeous, she obviously had a eye for it. As for you doing a service i think alot of people would be interested and as far as im aware once your up an running you can make it known on here, theres a post on here where people are offering their services so you could do well frm it!

Hi there,
I would be really interested to hear your ideas and opinions about the flowers you choose for your big day, I'm starting an internet floristry service and want to tailor it to wedding flowers.

What colours, themes, types of flowers would you choose?

Would you like advice from your florist regarding the best flowers to choose for price, season etc?

Are you influenced by flowers designs in bridal magazines, shows etc?

Would you prefer real or artificial flowers and do you know the pros and cons of each

I really appreciate all the ideas and advice you can give.
Thanks Poppy

Speaking as someone who will be going throught this soon, I want help with pretty much everything and need a florist who will take the stress out of the flowers as much as possible. I do have some ideas from looking in magazines but will need advice on what flowers go well together, come in the right colours, are in season/will be difficult to source and what I can get for my budget.

In particular I suffer from fairly sensitive hayfeaver and so need to know whether I would be better with artificial or whether there are less "heady" flowers I could use that would not set off my symptoms (I think sneezing to here comes the bride would be a bad look).

I would also want advice on how to co-ordinate bouquets, posies, church flowers and table flowers so they looked part of the overall theme but each contained suitable flowers.

I hope this helps.

I want red roses ,a small posy not a huge arrangement.I already knew what I wanted and didn't look for insipiration in mags.I also want a floral arch at the venue but not too sure on table flowers.Maybe one arrangement for the top table.I haven't considered artificial flowers.I would speak to the florist about what to do for my matron of honour some ideas for her.I haven't a clue about buttonholes who you get them for etc so I would ask advice on this also.

poppylamb
12-02-2008, 07:09 PM
Your florist will be able to provide your buttonholes and theme them in with your flowers and your floral arch.

I would say if your concerned about cost and if hay fever is an issue go for artificial flowers, they really can be amazing quality.

If you want to splash out or if you want your flowers to be scented go for real ones.

I'd really like to hear what styles of bouquet people are having, are you going for a single bold colour or a mixture, posy or shower bouquet.

Thanks for your time :)

Red roses look georgeous don't they, The type of bouquet where they are all packed tightly together does look best as a solid block of colour, without any gypsophilia in between ( can't stand that stuff myself but thats just personal opinion ).

I'm working round the clock to get my website up and running so hopefully will be able to give details in the very near future.

Thanks for all your comments :)

Rose petals scattered behind you by flower girl(s) can be nice.

Some synthetic flowers can look good and don't need any care taking. For buttonholes etc. they are fine.

Hi Poppy, if you're still wanting opinions, here are mine...

I'm having a quite tightly packed shower bouquet of white and purple/white calla lillies with simple dark foliage around the edge to set it off against my dress. My bridesmaids are having simple posies of tightly packed cream roses with rolled aspidistra leaves around the edges.

Personally, the flowers were really important to me and I spent ages looking at pics on the internet and friends' flowers etc. I wanted them to be simple but also make a statement with them... I think I'm basically going for 'traditional with a contemporary twist'! I never considered artificial flowers cos I love the real ones too much and there are no issues with hay fever etc.

Hope that helps :)

I've got a few bits for the bridesmaids to carry, the slightly older girls are carrying a wand each and the tiny ones teddies, both decorated with burgandy and ivory roses but I'd quite like real flowers for me and the adult bridesmaids. Does anyone know a florist who would do this without pushing me to buy more as I dont want flowers all over the venue, and what kind of price I'd be looking at?

We're using Monica Hewitt in Hillsborough and they have been absolutely brilliant - there was no hard sell in us having other flowers we didn't want and they spent so much time in making sure the colour roses we wanted were right. We must have spent about 2 hours in there one evening going through everything we wanted and they couldn't have been more helpful. Helen was the lady we spoke to. Very reasonable as well.

We're using Monica Hewitt in Hillsborough too! I emailed a few florists and Helen from there gave me the most detailed reponse, which i took as a good sign, so i went to see her before considering any others. At the meeting, which must have lasted over an hour, Helen was very helpful in helping me with the colours.

She also helps considerably with making sure you get something you like for the budget you have, and will try and help you cut costs where possible. For example, I liked the idea of a bunch of cala lilies which would cost upwards of £70 - £80. Helen sugessted that I just have a 2 or 3 rather than a big bunch as the flowers, all being the same, will get lost within a big bunch and this will save me money.

Obviously haven't seen the flowers yet, but service has been very good so far!

why dont you cut out the florist all together and go to the flower market you can pick up all manner of flowers there and it works out so much cheaper. I recently did the flowers for my nans wedding where she wanted 20 orchid button holes, x2 corsage , bridesmaid basket and headress, 2 wrist corsages for adult bridesmaid and also a handbag adournment and in total including accessories it only cost £40. Ask a florist to do this and it would have been closer to £200+.

The florist I am using would do that for you I'm sure. Her name is Beverley J Green and works from home (near Moss way). I found her exceptional value for money and listened to everything we wanted (I took my OH with me to discuss, and he did put in some good suggestions). She isn't pushy at all, you just tell what you want and what your budget is and she will sort you out. The flowers I am having are all excotic expensive flowers and she is doing them for a very good price.

PM me if you want her number.

Good luck with everything.

I'm going to give that a try, sounds very interesting. I suppose a "greedy" flower would be something with a fleshy soft stem like a tulip.
I'm off to the supermarket this Easter for some black food colouring will let you know the results.

Right, ditch the food colouring. If you want to create a bouquet of sparkling silver or black flowers and foliage you can buy coloured sprays from specialist florist suppliers.

I'm using artificial flowers so I'm going to try using craft sprays, will put a bouquet together over the Easter hols and post a picci on here to get your verdict. Will it be a silver success, let me know what you think. :)

I had a daisy theme for my own wedding, so good choice there!

It depends how you want to go in terms of jazzing your daisys up, you could incorporate some twisty willow or twigs into the bouquet I know that might sound a bit odd. will try to find a piccie on line to show what I mean.

They might look nice with some yellow or white gerberas tied with lemon and white gingham ribbon in a posie.

Or roses and ranunculus come in lovely shades of yellow.

I went for real flowers, to me they were really important and what I spent most money on after the venue. I spent a lot of time looking at websites and magazines for ideas so I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted when I went to visit florists for quotes, but the florist I chose in the end elaborated on my ideas and really brought them to life.

I still prefer real flowers to silk flowers.
One of my best friends got married just a month ago and she had a silk flower bouquet. She had bought it over the internet at a london florist (http://www.serenataflowers.com/sendflowers/London.htm). I must admit that the bouquet looked better than I had expected but for my wedding I would choose nothing but real flowers.

real flowers are just the most precious jewels on the planet. whether you buy them yourself grow them, or use a florist they add scent colour and vibrancy to your wedding. I have worked with artificial and for realsitic flowers you are looking at quite a price because no one can recreate nature at a low cost! Even if you only carry a stem down the aisle you will have an emotional attachment to that flower for years to come. You may not be able to show it to your grandkids but there are photos, and every anniversary when your husband buys you another bunch of those flowers. Artificial flowers are fakes in my little opinion

Hi there,
Got really inspired by the spring sunshine and buds on the trees and made this spring inspired wedding wreath.

I used twisted willow, white apple blossom, ivy and apple blossom foliage.

Is it something that would appeal for a spring wedding ?

After some time thinking i have now decided that my bridesmaids will not be having flowers, i would like a small posie of flowers, the main colour being ivory with small black flowers and some pink headpins in as small detail would also like diamantes in them, would also need buttonholes something simple though. im looking to buy these in a month or so and have pretty much decided i want silk. would like real but doubt i can afford them! if you know of anyone who could help, send pictures of previous work and give a rough price that would be great

The same roses for the men with a modern twist,
a white/ivory orchid wrist corsage for my matron ,
ivory corsages for mums and sister,
avalanche [ivory]roses, ivy and berries arch garland [its in a country location]
short square glass vases with alternate avalanche and grand prix roses in.
I am having my cake topper from Poppylamb!!

Hi everyone,
I've had a productive weekend trying out a few new bouquet styles and would really like to hear your opinions.

Classic red roses and carnations hand-tied and buttonhole.

I have seen a few posts on here where people have made their own bouquet using artificial flowers. can anyone tell me where you can buy them from?

i have seen some on the net but obviously i cannot see them before i buy which i think is quite important and i have heard about the flower markets but thought you had to have membership to shop there?!?

Or does anyone know if any florists work with artificial flowers? I am prepared to have a go myself but if someone will do the work for me i would consider it.

Hi there,
You don't need to be trade to buy from the market, although you wont get the trade price for your flowers. Check the opening and closing times on the councils markets website as they open and close very early.

I would be happy to do your wedding flowers for you, just click on the links below to view some of my work.

Hollyhocks at Woodseats always have some beautiful silk flower arrangements in the window. I'm pretty sure she does wedding flowers in silk as well as the most stunning things in real flowers.

I've only had real flowers and Christmas wreaths and arrangments from there and they have without exception been unique and stylish.

Hi, I have experience myself in flower arranging, so I was going to do my own flowers for my wedding but I decided I couldnt be bothered with the hassle, so I wanted someone to do mine cheap as I knew how much fresh flowers really cost from wholesalers. I found a lovely florist on Langsette road, Hillsborough called 'Libby Rose Flowers.' She is making me 6 buttonholes (mens) 2 other buttonholes (womans) 3 bridesmaids boquets and then a boquet for me. This has cost me £150. I dont know if your local, but she does deliver. You definatley get the service with a smile there! x

I think we are going to use Monica Hewitt for our wedding as she seems very reasonable and also has a very wide range of styles from traditional to contemporary. We had a great consultation with her and were very suprised at the low prices.
It looks like we will be spending about £200 altogether but that includes table decorations for 6 rounds & the top table, buttonholes, bouquet etc and decorated topiary for the ceremony.
http://www.monicafhewitt.co.uk/weddings.asp
email her for a CD of her examples for ideas and a price list ;)

We're using Monica Hewitt too and found the prices v reasonable. The consultation was v helpful - especially as I had no idea of what i wanted - and they will look at your budget and advise the best you can afford.
