hi wondrin if anyone can help with this question.
ive heard through the grapevine that there may be plans afoot to build on devonshire green. this then came up ion conversation in the pub on saturday where an old timer said that it can never be built on because the Duke of Devonshire boiuoght the area of land after it was bombed in ww2, and turned it into a monument (the rock object in the park). as a monument it cannot be developed/built on. can somebody clear this up for me and the others in this ongoing debate?
many thanks

Not sure about this, but if the late Duke of Devonshire bought the land then it's probable that it still belongs to his estate unless he gifted it to the city in some way. If that's so then surely it would have to be bought from the Duchess before anything could be built there?

But then he gave the land for a children's hospital to be built in the Rivelin Valley and that was touted as a secure unit for the mentally ill and is now a housing development, so perhaps the original intentions are not written in stone.

best thing to do would be to look at the Unitary development plan on sheffield city council's website and see what the land is designated as - likely to be urban green space in which case i can't see it being developed any time soon.
