Has anyone had a go with the HH beta and/or uses Kubuntu (Ubuntu but with the KDE desktop). I've recently changed hard drives to a larger one (to solve another problem) and so when I've partitioned it and reinstalled windoze I've left 1/3 free for a linux partition. I'm currently downloading the Kubuntu 8.04 beta and will give it a go when I get chance to burn the disc and run an install.

As I'm thinking of moving a lot of my 'always on' functionality on to a small headless server to replace my dum NAS box this desktop study's main use will become the occasional office ap, browsing and games. So a dual boot system that most often runs linux could be a real possibility.

Hi Cyclone, I use Kubuntu ver 7.04 (can't remember which of the animals it is) and it does everything I need. Be aware that there are going to be two versions of 8.04, one with KDE 3.5 and one with KDE 4.0. The 3.5 version is going to be a Long term support version, thats probably the one you will want to go with.
I'm going to upgrade my install when the 8.10 release is released as that should have KDE 4.1 which should be a more complete KDE

7.04 is Feisty Fawn. I'm currently running Feisty Fawn Ubuntu at work and Gutsy Gibbon (7.10) at home. I prefer the look of the gnome desktop to KDE (at the moment anyway - I'm waiting to see what KDE 4.0 is like ...), but when I finally get around to tidying up my home computer I'm going to run Xubuntu with the XFCE desktop. I was running it for a while from a live CD and I think the interface/desktop looks really good!

I have a windows/ubuntu dual boot on my work computer but I hardly ever use windows anymore. The only thing I actually need windows for is when i get emailed word documents (which, despite all the good work thats been put in, OO just doesn't handle right), and I am now running a windows virtual machine for stuff like that. If you don't need windows for anything more computationally intensive than Word (and you have a decent PC) I'd highly recommend the VM approach. See here:

It's also really cool! :)

I need windows to play crisis and supreme commander, both of which stress the hardware quite a lot so won't be playable through anything but a proper windows session.

The version I've installed as KDE 4.0 (on the basis that it's newer), but I managed to stuff the KDE configuration by changing a few of the advanced options for window effects. I found out today where the config is and I can just delete it from a command prompt, but I won't be home until next week now to do that, so all experimentation is on hold.
