I want to have a go at rock climbing, but not on real rocks (that looks too dangerous for a beginner), I'm going to give it a go on the climbing wall at the gym.

Does anyone know where I can get a cheap pair of climbing trainers ?

I would think Decathlon at the bottom of the moor would sell them, they seem to stock pretty much every outdoor and indoor sports gear... guess you could look online first... they have a web-site, cant remember it though...

try and google it, they are pretty decently priced, not dirt cheap but not expensive either! I'm after some nice hiking boots from there when I get some money :)

Of course, I never thought of Decathlon.

If you are climbing on a indoor wall you can use normal trainers.

If you decide you like it then try CCC's climbing section.
It's connected to the Edge so you would'nt be sold any old rubbish.

Climbing on real rock such as Stanedge can actually be easier, but if you are talking about the Virgin gym wall that's a great way to start as it's an automatic belay.

Have fun!

It is the Virgin gym where I'm going to give it a go.

I wasn't sure if you could wear normal trainers though, everyone seems to have special rock climbing ones.

I'll ask at the gym.

It does look like fun, with the added bonus that you can't kill yourself.

I used to go the the Virgin wall and I loved it. If you are just starting out trainers will be fine for the easier climbs, then if you enjoy it and advance to the harder climbs buy climbing shoes then. This will save you buying the shoes and then finding you don't realy enjoy it that much.

I brought my shoes from decathlon, i think they were about £40 but there were a few for around £30. Virgin is nice and safe providing you attach the auto belay, I once saw a bloke who forgot to attach it and realised halfway up, he was holding on like a scared kitten and had to be rescued (i apolagise if that bloke reads this, but it did make me smile).
