well its topical (and probably political)...but as the average cost of a school dinner is 37p - where does the rest of the money go? At my daughters school they cost in excess of #1.50 - so who makes? the school or the education department?

Thankfully my daughter said the school dinners were cold, tasteless and boring when she tried them and now stays for sandwiches...

I believe the rest of the money goes towards paying dinner ladies and transport etc

the food is pre-cooked before its delivered - therefore the school diner ladies don't cook it either...

They still have to be employed though. There are still dinner ladies who have to serve the food, look after the children, supervise playgrounds etc... Do you expect them to look after the little brats unpaid?

My former school - up north, and which my younger brother still attends - recently ended the contract with the company supplying the meals (Initial) and started doing it themselves. Apparently it's had quite an effect on the food offered!

Intial are shocking - they have a real 'good' reputation in the NHS

I think the most important thing is that the children are getting a balanced diet no matter how much it costs but i understand when internetowl is comming from 37p that must not be that nice a food. my son stays on and off he decides in a morning i just wish that they would make the portions bigger as my son always compains that he has not had enough when he stays, but then he makes up for it when he gets home.
Our school is trying out a healthy lunch time drinks are only water (this suits my son as he is a big water drinker ),
But there are a lot of parents kicking off that there child will not drink water they like (as they call it fizzy pop) I am sorry but if your child dont drink anything else then fizzy pop then thats ur fault .
My son is only to drink lemonade as a treat every so often not as a day to day thing hes only 4 neally 5 i would like him to have good teeth thanks.

The school gets given a budget to use as it pleases on books, teachers, after school clubs, school trips, lunches etc... It isn't really that simple, but that's a basic way of describing how it works.

Now let's say it charges the kids 37p a day for dinner, it then has to pay the staff who work out of the budget, which in short means less subsidies for other things, less school books, less x-tra curricular activites, and less money for teachers. If the lunches cover the cost of the staff who run them (and I used to get paid MORE working part-time in a bar than the poor ladies who have to deal with snotty, bratty kids (especially at secondary schools)) then it's more money for other areas of the school.

If you don't want to contribute to that, and want your child to each healthily, there is the option that's been mentioned many times, send your kid to school with sandwiches & an apple, as well as a bottle of evian!
