# Liptons (became part of Allied Foods, then Argyll Foods, before Safeway (UK) and now part of Wm Morrison).

Greybeard 08-04-2008, 18:13 I remember Liptons as grocer's shops, - a bit like Maypole, but never as supermarkets.
alankearn 08-04-2008, 18:28 Also Gowers and Burgons, Meadow, Shentalls these not supermarkets but multiple grocers where bacon was sliced in front of you and cheese was cut to size with a length of wire
convict621 08-04-2008, 19:44 Wasn,t there a Liptons at Firth Park in the 70,s? I think there was also one at Southey Green.
midvixen 08-04-2008, 21:22 There was also one at Wisewood !
at one time there were 27 liptons shops in sheffield but none were ever supermarkets just ordinary grocers shops
Gallons were another chain that had multiple shops together with Gowers and Burgons who late in the 50s merged into one company. Shentalls was another and on a smaller scale Bingham and Holland who at its peak had five shops spread around sheffield plus two in castle market
My 1st job after leaving school was in liptons, at nether edge
it was also my first job I left school in 1957 cannot remember much about though it was long long ago worked there 12 months
Sheff2006 10-04-2008, 18:59 Liptons, I remember,

I remember these 3 also. Can anyone remember the small fire that happened at the Fine Fare in Eckington sometime in the early 80s?

Yes, there was a Presto under the car park in the precinct opposite from the bus station - where the bridge over the road used to be.
In the 90's it became a Lo-Cost which eventually closed at some point and as far as I know is still closed as are nearly all the shops along that row.
There was also a Presto somewhere on Rockingham Way in the 80s which the last time I passed I think it was called What Everyone Wants.
sharonxxxx 11-04-2008, 10:22 ahhhh thanks for that i remember going in there as a kid just couldnt for the life of me remember its name
cheeres x
my mum used to run round it like a mad woman on the way home from town so we didnt miss our bus home x
I recall a Liptons in GIBRALTAR of all places back in the early 80's :P

yep there sure was on Bellhouse road, it's now Bellhouse Rd newsagents. We used to do a lot of our shopping there. Once a week Mum used to walk us on with a shopping trolley to Hillards on lane top and for a treat we used to catch the free asda bus from Hatfield House Lane which took us to Chapeltown. Back in those days Chapeltown was miles away, it was a proper day trip:)

I remember liptons it was in the haymarket just up from woolworths,i used to work there when i was 16 in 1963 it was just a small supermarket,i worked there for about a year.
Fuzzyfox 13-04-2008, 11:52 There was one at Townend, it used to be where the estate agents and chemist is now, then there was Fine fare now somerfields or similar.
Plain Talker 13-04-2008, 13:13 There was also a Presto somewhere on Rockingham Way in the 80s which the last time I passed I think it was called What Everyone Wants.
and the What Everyone Wants is also closed down, and has been for many years. (I think it was also renamed "Gwhat-Shops" (SP?) for a while, too.
I remember a Liptons on the parade of shops below the White Horse Pub, on Halifax road, near the corner of Southey Green road, right into the Nineteen- eighties, and I'm sure I remember a Liptons at Gleadless Townend, where the Block Buster Video Shop was (Is?), opposite the Petrol Station?
I remember the Shentalls, on John O' Gaunt shops which became a Fine Fare, and the Shentalls on the parade of shops at Park Hill flats.
I also remember Gowers and Burgins on the John O'Gaunt shops.
Ousetunes 13-04-2008, 13:18 I also remember Gowers and Burgins on the John O'Gaunt shops.
Used to be one in Ranmoor which became Toy Fayre (bit of a childhood dream on my doorstep in the 1970s and early 80s) and in turn was split into two with one side being a newsagent and the other a video shop.
The video shop (called Video Vault IIRC?) became La Mirage restaurant.
Both La Mirage and the newsagent closed and the premises are occupied by Ranmoor Tandoori.

I can't remember what the Fine Fare at Townend was before it was a Fine Fare. my ex hub, who grew up by the post office at GTE, says to his knowlege it was always a FF. ( before it became a star / jacksons/ sainsburys.)
He grew up there and says Gower and Burgins became the Liptons on the strip where the estate agent/chemist is now, and "lacklustre" video was the co-op "stoo-ers"
the somerfield/ kwiksave was the old GTE Azena Ballroom, in the dim and distant past. (where the Beatles played their first Sheffield gig)
I think there was 1 on Woodseats,if i remember right!
I think it might have been where Farm Foods is.
blueshaz 17-12-2009, 18:47 I worked at Liptons on Spa view road hackenthorpe during 70s there was one on Birley moor road, Birley spa lane and Delves road too
Spacecat 17-12-2009, 21:47 There was a Liptons 'supermarket' at page Hall until the late 70's.
