Hi im asking on behalf of my mum. Shes always kept a small tank of tropical community fish for as long as i can remember. She went and bought her herself as a treat a large bow fronted jewel tank. Fine no problems .Except everytime she buys her self Angel Fish they always die? Is it common for these fish to be hard to keep alive. The only other fish she ever keeps are little tetras..any suggestions why she keeps losing them would be grateful ..thanks inadvance x

I've not kept them myself but they're actually said to be quite hardy little fish. Obviously not something you cycle a tank with but they're meant to be relatively disease free. The only idea I can possibly think of is changing the source of the angel fish. And if you've already done that have you made sure the water quality is ok(pH 6.5 - 6.9 is recommended)? And for that matter if it's a new tank has it actually been properly cycled yet?

Hopefully that may be of some help, but I'm not professing to be an expert.

Hi thanks any help is apprechiated ..i should have mentioned ive worded it wrong really.. the new tank has been set up about 6 months .Shes bought from different pet shops and had the water tested...do you think - i wondered that the pump looked a fit fierce that this could be a problem for them?

Well I've had to downgrade my pump before. It was the original one which came with the tank...but when your pump is starting to pretty much suck fish into it. That's when you get a new one.
And yes. I think that may be a reason. They're a peacful slow moving fish...I wouldn't have thought the stress of fighting a current would be all that good for them to be honest.

The pump is certainly a possibility, as Angels don't like to much current. Having said that, the filtration is important.

Has your Mum tried angling the inlet, or using a trickle bar? We do this and have managed to keep great filtration added with slower moving area's of water.

I'm not an Angel lover (prefer Discus as in my avatar) but they can look fantastic.

I would suggest that the Aquarist Society we belong to www.svas.co.uk are having a Tropical Fish Auction on the 20th April at the Pheasant Inn, Lane Top. You're more than welcome to come and see what's for sale .... I know for certain that there are a number of larger Angels for sale

Any more help, and I'll do my best
