View Full Version : What's the most beautiful song?
I've been trying to think what the most beautiful songs are, songs that are really sweet and romantic and kinda want to make you cry... they dont HAVE to be romantic, but just songs that are really beautiful :)
so far I'm thinking these are definitly on the list
Eric Clapton - Wonderful Tonight (especially the slower version on the album Reptile)
R.E.M. - Everybody Hurts (this song can bring me close to crying at times!)
can't think of anymore at the moment, but what songs do you think are beautiful and/or nearly make you cry?
Led Zeppelin- Babe I'm Gonna Leave You
Led Zeppelin- That's The Way
Led Zeppelin- The Rain Song
RHCP- Otherside
RHCP- Under The Bridge
Beatles- Here Comes The Sun
Beatles- Yesterday
Coldplay- The Scientist
Eric Clapton- Tears In Heaven
John Lennon- Imagine
Travis- Why Does It Always Rain On Me
The Verve- Lucky Man
Faith Evans - I Love You, blatenly
A song has just come on my media player that I forgot
Snow Patrol- Run
Rubysoho 20-03-2005, 14:35 LA Guns - The Ballad of Jayne
Guns N' Roses - Patience
Rancid - Who Woulda Thought
Chris Isaak - Things go wrong
Hoobastank - The Reason
StarSparkle 20-03-2005, 14:49 Beautiful songs to me are those that have a big emotional effect on me.
Quite a lot of Only Ones' songs can make me feel very emotional/teary depending on my mood. The same with Marion songs. And sometimes Suede. I've never cried easily, so for these songs to have that effect is very unusual for me.
I'm really not sure if I like it or not, but it can be very cathartic.
One or two other songs I regard as beautiful:
Eric Clapton "Tears in Heaven"
Waterboys "The Whole of the Moon"
The Clash "Stay Free"
Oasis "Don't Look Back in Anger"
The Verve "The Drugs don't Work"
Frankie goes to Hollywood "The Power of Love"
Umm, maybe I'm more emotional than I think .....
StarSparkle :)
Depends what you find beautiful i suppose... here is my little list of songs i could hear again and again.
Prodigy: Your Love
Oasis: Slide Away
Aim: the girl that fell through the ice
Tori Amos: Tear in your hand
: Playboy Mommy
Raze: Break for Love
I agree with Starsparkle Stay Free by The Clash, this makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Also, Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory by Johnny Thunders and Don't Look Back in Anger by Oasis.
Probably Woman by John Lennon
Also Rubysoho i like your picture
It's really hard to answer this question, because my tastes and emotional states are constantly changing, but I'll attempt it anyway! These are not necessarily beautiful in the typical sense of the word, but are included here because they have moved me for some reason or other and therefore are beautiful.
Annie Lennox - "Love Song For A Vampire"
This is a very haunting song sung by a very talented lady, and always brings a tear because it was around at the time my gran died and never fails to remind me of her.
Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Dosed"
If my husband and I were inclined to have danced at our wedding (we don't do dancing!) this would have been our first dance. It's beauty to me is in the lyrics. Some are a little bizarre, but I especially love this part, which just seems to encompass everything that I feel about my husband:
"In you a star is born and,
You cut a perfect form,
Someone forever warm."
Snow Patrol - "Chocolate"
Oh god, I just love Snow Patrol in general! This song just makes me feel all warm and cosy - a combination of the lyrics, music and a great video just totally endear me to Gary Lightbody. If someone was singing this to me, I couldn't fail to forgive them for whatever they had done - so moving.
James Taylor - "Fire And Rain"
This has been one of my favourite songs for years after I heard it on the soundtrack to "Running On Empty". It's such a simple song and full of despair (about his battle with heroin and the suicide of a close friend) but seems to be uplifting and optimistic at the same time, despite the lyrics suggesting otherwise.
This is getting a bit long now, so I'll just list the rest.
David Gray - "This Year's Love"
Greenday - "Good Riddance"
Madonna - "Substitute For Love"
Massive Attack - "Teardrops"
Paul Weller - "You Do Something To Me"
Stone Roses - "She Bangs The Drums"
U2 - "One"
And so many others that I can't think of right now.
Johnny Cash's cover of Nine Inch Nail's "Hurt". Fantastic.
Lots of songs ..
Favs : REM- Everybody hurts / Pretenders - I'll stand by you

I agree this was the last song that really blew me away... the video clips of him from his youth when he was on top of the world contrasted with the decay and emptiness of his final days... spooky... http://www.markromanek.com/video/14.html
As for the soppy stuff:
U2 - The Sweetest Thing
Incubus - I Miss You
Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye
(1) The Living Years.
(2) If I had a photograph of you. 'A flock of seagulls'
(3) All I want to do is make love to you.
(4) I want to know what love is. 'Foreigner'
(5) I've been waiting for a girl like you. 'Foreigner'
(6) Africa. 'Toto'
(7) Hallelujah
( 8 ) River of dreams. 'Billy Joel'
(9) Everything I do, I do it for you. 'Bryan Adams'
(10) The Belfast Child. 'Simple Minds'

"The Card Cheat" is beautiful too, but for me there's just something extra-special about "Stay Free".
Forgot to mention earlier:
- The Smiths "There is a Light that Never Goes Out"
StarSparkle
"Something so right" by Annie Lennox or "All about our love" by Sade.
bobsyouruncle 21-03-2005, 12:36 songs that usually make me feel quite emotional are-
Judy Tzuke- Stay with me till Dawn
Sinead O'Connor-Nothing Compares to You
Tina Turner- We dont need another hero (beyond thunderdome)
Garth Brooks -The Storm
Garth Brooks- Mr Midnight :(
I heard Richard Thompson sing 'Beeswing' a couple of years ago, that nearly always makes me cry a little
FairyNormal 21-03-2005, 15:06 Everybody hurts......brings a lump to my throat.
Hymn to Her .. The Pretenders
I have always loved that song and chose it to be played at my best mates funeral a couple of years ago. The words were just perfect.
She will always carry on
Something is lost, something is found
They will keep on speaking her name
Somethings change
Some stay the same.
When ever I play/hear it I half cry and half smile thinking about her.
I love a song called "Leave" by Matchbox Twenty, if you get chance listen to it, Its set me off crying more times than I can remember.
I cant listen to "good Riddance" by Green Day anymore without bursting into tears, it was played at my best friends funeral, last time I heard it was in a supermarket and i was just sat in the isle crying.

Disco_Cat 21-03-2005, 16:57 Oxygen by Willy Mason, sad in a way but with a very possitive message.
Sad But True by Transplants , but that is more of a personal choice so I don't know if anyone else will agree.
DanSumption 21-03-2005, 17:17 Gotta agree with Johnny Cash "Hurt" - almost every song on that album makes me cry, but that one especially.
What I can't understand is why so many people have listed Eric Clapton songs. Totally devoid of any emotional content, as far as I'm aware.
But the one which is making me cry the most at the moment isn't actually a song, it's a piece of piano music: Clair de Lune, by Debussy (there's a bastardised version of this in the current Chanel advert featuring Nicole Kidman, but it's not as heart-rending as the piano-only version). It's a piece of music which seems to be both incredibly happy and incredibly sad simultaneously: it feels like it encompasses an entire life.
The other song that always touches me also encompasses an entire life, and is one that nobody here is likely to have heard of, by a band that nobody will have heard of: Largelife by Lake of Puppies.
I'd better go now. I'm feeling sniffly already.
Disco_Cat 21-03-2005, 17:39 If you like his covers album you should try and track down a copy of ‘my mothers hymn book’
"Air that I breathe" by the Hollies
"No Ending" by Delays
"Sweet Song" by Blur
"Good Riddance" Green Day
All very beautiful I think..

Tears in Heaven - often gets a mention because he wrote it after the tragic death of his son. I also find "Behind The Sun" very moving.
The song I'd choose is "The Man With the Child In His Eyes" by Kate Bush. Brings a tear to my eyes but don't know why.
Disco_Cat 21-03-2005, 18:43 Hate something, change something.
And it did! I hate the crappy ads on commercial radio, Honda started playing this song over entire ad breaks.
bobsyouruncle 22-03-2005, 17:20 almost forgot my all time favourite-
Roberta Flack-First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (from "Play Misty For Me)
this song ALWAYS brings a tear to my eye
and "Killing Me Softly With His Song" by her as well- truly brilliant.

I'm not an Eric Clapton fan, in fact I hardly know any of his songs apart from "Tears in Heaven", so I can't comment on the emotional content of his other material.
However, Tears in Heaven is a deeply emotional song - as Cols says, it was written following the death of Clapton's toddler son, and I find it a beautifully written poem from a father to his son. I was in tears the first time I heard it.

No I think it was Poison.
Every rose has it's thorn,

Sorry but that's a bit too crass to be a classic.
I was once haunted by my clock radio which woke me up one morning in 1991 with a perfectly cued up "Man with the child in his eyes" by Kate Bush.
I couldn't get the song out of my head, and bought her greatest hits on my way home that night, which I played so much it wore out my CD player. And Man with a Child in his eyes is such a Beatiful song.

That is a beautiful song, Muddycoffee.
I didn't like it at all when it was first released, but then I heard it on the radio about a year ago, and found it very moving. I listened properly to the words, and understood what the song was about for the first time. Another of those songs that makes me feel tearful, in a good way!

Quoting myself here but as I've said, it moves me even though I don't understand the lyrics. Care to elaborate a bit ....
Incredible if you believe the fact that she was only 14 when she wrote it.

It's difficult to put into words, Cols. I take her to be singing about someone she loves very much, who retains an innocence and freshness about them that is rare in an adult. This person could be any age, but they can still view the world as a child does, someone who can look at the world as a place of wonder and beauty.
This childlike quality in someone is beautiful and can be very moving, not least because of its rarity. The person concerned is a rare flower to be treasured - but can easily be hurt and damaged by an insensitive world. Kate's obvious concern for him is very moving.
Kate sings of this man with great love and tenderness - whatever his age, in many ways he is still a child.
That's just my interpretation - perhaps it says as much about me as it does the actual song?
StarSparkle :)
Possibly the most meaningful record for me is no longer important

Oh and the Cardiacs are possibly one of the best live acts in the world.
NEKRO138 07-04-2005, 14:53 In a forum about the most beautiful songs ever, I didn't expect to see the Cardiacs mentioned. But yeah, I saw wm support Wildhearts n they were great.
...just a shame they very rarely venture north of the River Thames.
NEKRO138 07-04-2005, 15:00 On a serious, or as serious as I get, note The Johnny Cash version of Hurt is good.
I like the Danzig song Blood and Tears from Lucifuge, though it is cheesy. He also did a good song for the 'Less Than Zero' soundtrack called You and Me.
Yes. I'm a big Danzig fan.

Yup, and they have been at least since I first saw them 20 years ago (actually, they were more fun when there were hundreds of them onstage, albeit not quite as tight as they are nowadays).
I took a couple of friends to see them when they played at the Leadmill a few months ago, and was surprised that despite the fact that both friends have far more conservative musical tastes than me, they also said that the Cardiacs were the best live act in the world (no "possibly").
And while we're on the subject of beautiful songs: Cardiacs "Whole World Window". Makes me cry every time (though never quite as much as the first time, when the confetti bomb exploded, the flower bouqets were presented onstage, and the mosh-pit became one big sweaty pool of love).

Not true, in fact I've never seen them play South of the Thames, even though they hail from Kingston (close to my own stomping ground).
North of Watford, now that's a different matter!
Sam Miguel 07-04-2005, 18:25 I my opinion, Imagine by John Lennon is the most beautiful piece of music ever written.

I saw a band called The Cardiacs at the Marquee in London about 15 years ago. I thought they were the most disturbing band I'd ever seen. Not because they were bad or nasty lyrics etc but because their music had time signatures all over the place. It made very uneasy listening. I'm not sure if it's the same outfit though.

Sounds like The Cardiacs to me...It's interesting some people react negatively to the Cardiacs, I know some people who can't be in the same room when a Cardiacs CD is on.
George Michael's "Careless Whisper" and Don McLean's version of "American Pie".....the first revives memories of a previous love, and the second....I've always liked it...no other reason!

The Get Up Kids - Send Us A Saint (http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~cptwhite/The_Get_Up_Kids_-_Send_Us_A_Saint.mp3)
The get up kids final live show is next month. They were one of the founders of the emo scene but for me their last two albums were the best. Finding a more mature tone while still being extremely heartfelt this song never reached their final album, probably because the song wasn't in keeping but it's a truely sweet song and the last new song I will here by them. Almost feels like a goodbye message and definately moved meso it's got to be one of my most beautiful songs!
my top three would be 1 - if you were here tonight, alexander oneil 2- endless love d ross m gaye 3- always and forever by heatwave. at a push id also have to mention terry currans classic singing the blues :hihi:
seanyboy 29-06-2005, 18:42 There are so many songs that I think are beautiful and mean a lot to me, but one I have been listening to a lot lately is;

If anyones heard this song you'll know how amazing it is. Theres one line in particular for me;
"maybe we'll be butterflies....", you'd have to hear the whole song to get the beautiful (some might even say tragic) concept.

What a disaster! I've got loads of copies of 'Pet Sounds', please let me gi.., er send you one. Many people have tried to cover this song - all have failed. Carl Wilson had by far the loveliest voice in the Beach Boys. I sincerely hope there isn't anyone out there who thinks The Beatles did a 'sweet' cover of 'Strawberry Fields Forever'....
My favourite song at the moment is 'Deacon Blues' by Steely Dan (in spite of the fact one of the most terrible bands in history took their name from it).
Surely it isn't simply the song which makes you cry, it's what you associate with it, hence the accounts of people collapsing in supermarkets when a piece of music reminds them of someone they hold dear.
I note the thread is entitled 'Whats (sic) the most beautiful song'. In that case, it will have to be 'Blue' by Joni Mitchell.
voiceofbrain 01-07-2005, 15:15 "The luckiest" by "Ben Folds" is one of the most beautifully crafted songs i've ever heard...
its a real tearjerker.....one for your lady
trouble by coldplay. i was feeling very upset and wasnt properly listening to it(cos it was on in the car) but then suddenly for some reason i heard, "they spun a web for me" it really hit me because it was so true to my situation and although i dint start crying it was quite spooky that i happened to listen to that bit. its a very beautiful song and is chilling and happy at the same time.
Theres a song by a guy with a beard and a gruff voice, in the video he's sat in a New York apartment playing a piano - one of the lines goes something like:
'We've got forever, so come take my hand'
'Lets make this night last forever ' etc . . .
don't know the title but it's a great song.
Also the most beautiful song ever is:- 'Hallelujah'
Does anybody know the song Im on about in my last post .. . . .it keeps going round in my head now, ever since I thought of it!!

Yeah, they did a fairly nice rendition of it. Nowhere near as beautiful as the Ben Harper version, from the I Am Sam soundtrack.

Yes! The original version, by Ewan MacColl, is pretty good too, but the most moving version of this song I ever heard was at a gig in London by a band called Betty, about ten years ago. Gorgeous.
i am trying to get hold of mp3 versions of this song if anyone has names of "popular" or published versions i would be happy to reveive them so i can try to get hold of them.

also, Orbital - The Girl With The Sun In Her Head..
Till Man 15-08-2006, 12:50 A Gentleman's Excuse Me - Fish.
So sad, so moving.
Ousetunes 15-08-2006, 15:18 I haven't read through the whole thread so apologies if any of these have been mentioned.
I reckon you don't find too many songs whose subject, the voice and vocal of the singer, the arrangement and production are so spot-on that you cannot fail to be moved by it.
Step forward Kate Bush with The Man With The Child In His Eyes. The word beautiful was made for this song. Her voice is so clear yet vulnerable (she IS the little girl she is singing about). The arrangement is nothing short of stunning, from the opening piano notes to the flutes which appear before verse two and back to the sweeping piano notes in the refrain.
There'a horn arrangement which connects each part of the song together, giving the song a slight heaviness. The 'oooh, he's here again' slides wonderfully into the chorus. The lyric is brilliant: you're taken right into the moment. You want the song to go on forever, but it's only two verses and two choruses long.
It always puts me in a reflective mood.
Other beautiful songs:
Don't Give Up On Us by David Soul and of course, Nilson's startling cover version of Without You.
Again, this latter song carries some emotional weight. The opening piano notes (bathed in echo) gives the song an immediate uneasy, unsettled feeling. Then the voice - this man sung it like he meant it. The song is forever falling (E, C#m, F#m, G#) to be picked up briefly for the chorus.
Its relatively sparse arrangement is stunning - it's almost in shadow. Strings come in to add further weight.
Shame then that Mariah Carey should show just how wrong you can go in doing a cover version. Nilson's vocal sounds all-out, but it isn't: it shows wonderful restraint.
It's actually the strings at the end which carry the full weight and yearning - Nilson's voice fades into the distance.
BasilRathbon 15-08-2006, 15:41 Back in the seventies I used to find Wednesday fans' touching rendition of "You're Gonna Get Your ****ing Head Kicked In" particularly moving.......
bassplayer 17-08-2006, 11:51 Anita Baker - Sweet Love it starts with " With all my heart I love you baby".
This gets me everytime I hear it and the music and ooohhh man! Also by her Whats Wrong, beautiful tune and extremely melodious.
George Michael - Cowboys and Angels and Jesus to a Child.
Tamia - Move on My heart, this was a tune she did with Quincy Jones.
George Duke - Rhyme and Reason; for all those that love someone from a distance or closer but are married and will not take it any further than being close friends, THIS IS the song for you.
Just sooooooooooperb "Though I want to stay close, I realise the most we'll ever be is good friends"

So sad, so moving.
Do you still keep paper flowers in the bottom drawer with your Belgian lace
taking them out every year to watch the colors fade away?
Do you still believe in fairy tales, in battlements of shining castles
safe from the dragons that lie beneath the hill?
Are you still a Russian princess rescued by a gypsy dancer
to anyone who'll listen is that a story you tell?
You live a life of fantasy, your diary romantic fiction.
Can't you see it's hard for me, can you see what I am trying to say?
It's a gentleman's excuse me so I'll take on step to the side.
Can you get it in your head I'm tired of dancing?
For every one step forward we're taking two steps back.
Can you get it in your head I'm tired of dancing?
I know you still like old fashioned waltzes
your reflection in the mirror that you flirt with as you glide across the floor
but if I told you the music's over would you want to hear
that your dance card is empty that there's no-one really there?
Do you still believe in Santa Claus, that there's a millionaire
looking at your front door with a key to a life that you'd never understand?
All I have to offer is the love that I have, it's freely given
you'll see its value when you see what I've tried to say.
It's a gentleman's excuse me so I'll take on step to the side.
Can you get it in your head I'm tired of dancing?
For every one step forward I'm taking two steps back.
Can you get it in your head that from this one step forward
there's no turning back?
Can you get it in your head I'm tired of dancing?
We're finished dancing
EdnaKrabappe 17-08-2006, 12:20 There are many songs that come into this category..
First time ever I saw your face ... I like Kelly Jones' version but I am biased.
Nothing compares 2u - overplayed to death at the time but a beautiful song.
English Rose The Jam
So glad to see people have mentioned Man with the child in his eyes... I've got a lovely copy of that by Hue and Cry and Pat Kane's voice took the song to a different meaning for me.
My last tango Nerina Pallot.

three stars - eddie cochran
somebody got murdered - the clash
down in the tubestation - the jam
baby i love you - the ramones

father & son - cat stevens
Having just read all this thread I went and downloaded "things go wrong" by Chris Isaak - I like his voice and hadn't heard the song before. I agree that it is absolutely stunning.
However, my absolutely most beautiful song ever is probably (and I know its been mentioned once) The Blower's Daughter" by Damien Rice. Just an incredibly simple and bare song, not in any way the kind of music that I would ordinarily like, but it is an exeptionally beautiful song
Gigantic by the Pixies. It's lovely and makes me dance
sTaGeWaLkEr 21-08-2006, 23:48 Jump – Madonna (Inspirational if you’re thinking about change)
Goodbye my lover – James Blunt (Great if you want to wallow in a love that went a bit tits up)
I know him by heart – Vonda Shepard (Anyone single should listen. You’ll see why)
Time to say goodbye – Andrea Bocelli (Still has the ability to send shivers down my spine, I wont say why)
No more I love you’s – Annie Lennox (As above)
The Rose – Bette Midler (It reminds me of a completely amazing person who was very close to me. She died earlier this year)
Wind beneath my wings - Bette Midler (ditto)
Maryland – Vonda Sheperd (I’m lucky enough to have had her sing it just for me!)
Affirmation – Savage Garden (How true these words are!)
I never cease to be amazed at the power of music and lyrics!
:)

Waltheof 22-08-2006, 19:30 At least Fareast goes back a bit further than most--why assume the most beautiful song must be a modern one? I can think of some lovely 18th-century ones such as "Where'er you walk" and Handel's "Ombra mai fu", or even medieval ones that I have heard recreated.
Fareast: if we are into French song then my vote goes for J'attendrai, which came out at the same time as Edith Piaf's songs--I have it on the old 78 sung by Tino Rossi. Or Parlez moi d'Amour, as sung by Josephine Baker.
helenbean 22-08-2006, 19:32 Stop Swimming by Porcupine Tree
Wonderful:thumbsup: muse-unintended. lazarath-porcupine tree:clap:
Waltheof 22-08-2006, 19:34 Or even Plaisir d'Amour--the French version, please, not the English adaptation done by Joan Baez.
A currently fave of mine is 'Coles Corner' by Sheffield's own Richard Hawley....
Truly Madly Deeply by Savage Garden
Every rose has its thorn - Poison
No Women No Cry - Bob Marley
Cannonball / The Blowers Daughter - Damien Rice
Linger - The Cranberries
love these songs :)
raganoonande 25-10-2006, 15:29 Songs that usually bring a tear of emotion to my eye, or stir feelings in me are:
'Vincent' - Don Mclean, I have great difficulty singing along to this one without crying, as its too beautiful for words.
'Songs Of Love' - Divine Comedy. Beautiful words and music.
'I Know You By Heart' - Eva Cassidy. I too find this difficult to sing along to, as its just too emotional. The song was originally written by a woman, who had lost her father, and the song is about him and his last days with her. The lyrics 'I saw your sweet smile, I heard your laughter', you really need to get your hanky ready!
'I'm Not In Love' 10cc - This song is very disturbing, and I cannot put it into words, but it always gets to me. I think its one of the most romantic songs ever written.
'Winter' - Tori Amos - In my opinion one of her best. Lovely emotional song, simple lyrics (a rarity for Tori), but to the point. I love the line 'When you gonna love you as much as I do'. Its really touching.
'Stay With Me Til Dawn' Judi Tzuke - Another song like 10CC, it just gets to me and I can't explain why. It makes you think of people you ache for. Very romantic and emotional.
I could go on all night, but I can't think of all the songs at once.
raganoonande 25-10-2006, 15:38 Gotta agree with Johnny Cash "Hurt" - almost every song on that album makes me cry, but that one especially.
I have to agree with you, Clair De Lune is a beautiful piece of music, which always make me feel a bit melancholy, but in a nice way. My nephew has a little toy which I bought for him just before he was born. He is a cuddly star with a pull down string on it. It plays Clair De Lune and my sister mace up some lyrics about him to the tune. So its very close to my heart for that reason too.
I find that I am moved by Classical music even more so than pop. One of my favourite classical pieces and one of the best I've ever heard is 'The Aquarium' by Saint-Saens. It really affects you. I always think it sounds like music that should accompany somebody, who's been given the opportunity to view their past, and they're looking on at the events that have happened to them since they were born. It just makes me 'The Past'.
the_mandarin 25-10-2006, 16:02 "Fields Of Gold" by Sting
...'Winter' - Tori Amos - In my opinion one of her best. Lovely emotional song, simple lyrics (a rarity for Tori), but to the point. I love the line 'When you gonna love you as much as I do'. Its really touching. ...
'Little Earthquakes' is a wonderful album, her finest to date. I love 'Tear in Your Hand': "cutting my hands up every time I touch you. Maybe it's time to wave goodbye now..." .

slimsid2000 27-10-2006, 13:28 It is certainly true that Black Lace’s classic Agadoo has been often dismissed as merely a Euro-centric post-colonial historical narrative, even by those who praise its neo-imperial pre 19th century didactical approach.
However this view is now regarded by almost all serious scholars as a gross over-simplification. In order to achieve even a rudimental understanding of this song it is first necessary to comprehend that it is extensively influenced by the existentialist writings of Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus as well as representing a mild critique and powerful counter-thesis to Marcel Proust’s Les Plaisirs et les Jours.
Recent accademic thinking has ternded to concentrate upon the neo-cenceptionalist influences within Agadoo which are increasingly regarded as a neo-classical critique of exestentialism itself.

Living Years was Mike and the Mechanics, back in the mid 80s iirc.
Top song.
Till Sinbad off Brookside ruined it on Stars in their Eyes that time!
Free by Lighthouse family. A nice song in my opinion. Most of the others have been mentioned.
chloelouise 03-11-2006, 03:26 Most of mine have prob' been mentioned but here goes anyhoo:
Nothing Compares 2 U (Kelly Jones version - sorry purists!)
Beach Boys -God Only Knows (not a cover -lol)
Brick -Ben Folds Five ---brilliant
Don't Look Back In Anger ---- totally under-rated as 'beautiful'
Hallelujah ( Again, sorry purists but I like the Rufus Wainwright version at the moment)
Everybody Hurts ---- sooo sad.
And I can't think of any more right now! Will prob edit soon....
oooh, i remembered one that makes me sad...... don't know if that constitues beautiful but will write about it anyway! ------ Tears In Heaven - Eric Clapton ...... ooh and It Must Have Been Love......
Chloe x
Brick -Ben Folds Five ---brilliant...
I agree, 'Brick' is a lovely song. Extrememly sad though. Not one to listen to when you're feeling down. 'Landed', from 'Songs For Silverman' is more optimistic and equally beautiful.
...Hallelujah ( Again, sorry purists but I like the Rufus Wainwright version at the moment)
I like this one too. KD Lang has also recorded a version. Her voice suits it perfectly, I think.

Wreck of the Day by Anna Nalick
Yeah it's a shame Anna has not made more progress in this country. I love Breathe (2am) which also comes under the beautiful song category.
I also realised I didn't put down on my original post Brighter than sunshine by Aqualung. Matt Hales is again a really underrated performer in this country. That song makes me have goosebumps on me.

A recent - for me - addition to the list is The Postal Service's 'Such Great Heights' (http://anxiousaboutlife.blogs.com/thepostalservicesuchgreatheights.mp3). The lyrics are lovely:
I am thinking it's a sign that the freckles
In our eyes are mirror images and when
We kiss they're perfectly aligned
I have to speculate that God himself
Did make us into corresponding shapes like
Puzzle pieces from the clay
True, it may seem like a stretch, but
It's thoughts like this that catch my troubled
Head when you're away and when I am missing you to death
LitleMermaid 18-12-2007, 22:33 Part of Will Young's "Home":love::love:
Looking back we were strangers in the night
We were told that we let our hearts collide
And I swear I had the time of my life
Wish I could stay, it just wouldn't be right
I know you
You turn the light off last
You let me sleep to dream
You let me wake up first
I believe in you and that will never change
But I must turn away
Now it's time to go home
Piaf 's Hymn A L'Amour or La Vie en Rose , Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien or Milord.......and many, many more of hers ; too many to list.
Me too. Saw the movie a couple of months ago and the singing made me cry as much as the story did.

frostiekazza 31-12-2007, 00:49 Fields of barley - the one by Eva Casssidy .Its absolutley beautiful , when i hear it i have to stop whatever im doing and just listen .
Dont want to miss a thing - Aerosmith , has the same affect on me as well for more personal reasons though , when my sister-in-law was really ill with cancer some of the last words she said were
' i dont want to close my eyes , and i dont want to fall asleep ' ( the first two lines of the chorus ) because she was scared she wouldnt wake up if she did . I loved the song anyway but like i said its more personal now and still beautiful . XX

And the ethos behind the song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCdpcQAcBZ0
In the back of a car on a road in the dark
In the stillicide, silently falling snow
I have packed everything that I own in a bag
And I’m driving, I’m driving to Idaho.
A poem for leaving, a reason to go
So I’m driving, I’m driving to Idaho
Cause I can’t be anyone but me, anyone but me.
And I can’t keep dreaming that I’m free, dreaming that I’m free
I don’t want to fall asleep and watch my life from fifty feet
My hands are on the wheel so I’m driving to Idaho.
Cause I hear it’s mighty pretty...
And oh, I’ve been dumb, I’ve been perfectly beautiful
Lain on my back buying lovers with stealth.
But I’m sick of you all, and I’m sick of opinions
And I’m sick of this war I wage on myself...
I don’t know why I’m so gripped to go there –
A universe riddle that only I know?
Mr Robert he says, ‘It’s all in the head!’
Tell me, Phaedrus, what’s good, is it Idaho?
Cause I can’t be anyone but me, anyone but me.
And I can’t keep dreaming that I’m free, dreaming that I’m free
I don’t want to fall asleep and watch my life from fifty feet
My hands are on the wheel so I’m driving to Idaho.
Cause I hear it’s mighty pretty...
In Idaho.
