Elbows "Friends of Ours" is the most beautiful piece of music I've heard recently. Makes me all melty but the lyrics to "the Bones of You " are sooo true. They instantly capture what it feels like to hear a song that takes you back to somewhere, someone long gone but never really forgotten. When you were a teenager and you thought you would be happy for ever.
"A man of my calibre, stood in the street like a sleepwalking teenager"
"I dealt with this years ago "
"Took a hammer to every memento"
"But image on image like beads on a rosary"
"Pulled through my head as the music takes hold and the sickener hits"

i agree with lots that have been mentioned already (Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah is so the most beautiful!)
but here's some more...
Airbrone toxic event - Midnight
Pearl Jam - Black
Carter USM - The impossible dream
Pink Martini - La Soledad (devastating - gets me from the very first chord, which is chopin i believe)

now i need to go and think of some happier beautiful ones :)

Try 'song to the siren' by This mortal Coil. Liz frazers (Cocteau Twins) singing is haunting. :)

I think the Flower Duet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Qx2lMaMsl8) from Lakmé by Delibes is the most hauntingly beautiful piece of music I have ever heard.

I particularly like music that foreshadows the payoff, if you see what I mean. Once you know the piece you can see how they build and build and you start to hear the little teasing snippets of the melody that is going to make your whole body tingle (and more) at the end of the piece. Random examples of this that spring to mind are Like The Swallow by Saint Etienne and Echoes by Pink Floyd. And Home By The Sea by Genesis. Not that I'd call any of those particularly beautiful, but when that building tension is coupled with a haunting melody then the only way I can describe such music is orgasmic!

I'd buy that cd. She was gifted. My favourite of her's is the self-penned "Who knows where the time goes".

Oh I love that Chicago song.

I don't think that Tony Joe White has had a mention so I want to add ' Closer to the Truth" to the list, great track especially these verses

They're taking down the rain forest
Changing it to a room without a view
And the big trees fall like dominoes
And we move closer to the truth....

And who's gonna tell the children
How the rivers used to flow cystal blue
And we keep leaving scars on Mother Earth
And moving closer to the truth

I don't recall Tony Joe White ever being mentioned anywhere on SF before, which is odd as he writes such good songs. The "Closer to the Truth" cd includes his originals of the Tina Turner hits, "Steamy Windows" and "Undercover Agent for the Blues". Great stuff!

I love 'How Does it Feel' by Slade - it's nothing like their usual shouty songs, it's just really simple and beautiful. You'd think it was by a completely different band if Noddy Holder didn't have such a distinctive voice!

It's such a subjective thing, and there's some great stuff in here. I rarely cry with the exception to when I listen to certain songs- here's one of them, this guy is such an inspiration to me-
