I hope you will agree with me that this is very important to the future health of our children.
I think its very brave of Jamie to take on such a thankless task, and that you will all want to support him

Thanks

Sure, it's a great idea and deserves support, but when celebrities get involved in projects such as this, I am always sceptical as to how much of it is is genuine do-gooding, and how much of it is raw publicity-seeking.

And shouldn't he be spending more time at home with his own small children?

Surely he's not purposely keeping out of the way like a lot of dads do while the difficult period is over?

Hmmmm.

Whatever his reason... SOMEONE should be doing it

Seems to me its something he feels he can't just ignore.

I totally agree.

I wasn't being 'arsey' with you, just the 'science' behind the thinking and the personal politics.

l support the cause.

Part of Jamie Oliver's campaign to feed school kids healthier meals in school.

No doubt there are some of you who can't stand Jamie Oliver, but I would ask that rather come on and say "UH, I'm not supporting anything that %$^£ does" - that you look beyond the face of the Campaigner and realise the work he is doing is for the health and future of our children. It only takes a second to sign and we need as many as we can to get Mr Blair to spend more than 37p on a child's meal.

Many thanks have a good week!

Actually,

I believe that the amount that is spent on school dinner's is determined by the local council, rather than central government.

Also, before all the hand-ringing starts, surely parents are responsible for what their kids eat? If they're concerned about the rap at school, why not give the kids a healthy packed lunch and a helthy cooked meal in the evening?

Oh yes...I'm sorry.....it's always easier to blame someone else than take responsibility yourself... ;)

Dear Mod - why hasn't this thread been moved - when my earlier one relating to the same subject matter has been dumped in general chat - surely this should have been too - or is there some sort of discrimination at work here?

Good question about this thread. The only other thread of yours I can see reported is 'Wincobank Incident' which I also agree is in the wrong place and I have moved that too.

If you have an issue about 'discrimination' then please contact us and explain the details.

Moved.

Joe - you are the last person I would have expected to be so negative or to offer such an awkward comment. This was a simple posting asking for support - free/non financial/just signing a petition. Why make any more out of it? Why don't you post your comments in your political section starting tomorrow?

However - just in response to your point, local council's may set a local budget - but they only have the amount of money our government decides to give them. ;)

Liose,

Not a political comment from me - more a sociological one.

I'm genuinely interested in why there is a feeling amongst a lot of parents that the schools are more responsible for feeding their kids healthily than they are?

And I'm not suggesting anyone doesn't sign up! :)

How comes the text on the thread doesn't read what the 'edit' shows? Are there other hidden messages in mod's posts that we are missing out on?

Ummm....not sure what you mean here.

I can't see any 'differences'.

Please PM me if there is a problem. Otherwise we're going to hijack this thread in to a chat between me and you.

We make sure our kids get a healthy lunch by sending them with packed lunches. However, we may consider paying for school meals soon if Tony Blair keeps his promise to make them more healthy.

This is quite an interesting subject. I've been reading today that prison meals cost 4 times as much!

37p is of course only the average, some is less!!!

It's a shame that so many people are happy to shove complete junk into their children, and themselves, without a second thought.

I think the issue is that parents are paying substantially more for their 37p meal for their kids - thats probably why more and more kids are not eating school dinners these days...

i watched jamies program and thought it was some of the best TV in ages. I agree with Joe and Jamie. School dinners are atrocious and are ful of crap, something needs to be changed. School dinners were originally introduced to make sure that children got 5 healthy meals a week,( it was assumed they weren't getting this home). Now many children get netiher healthy meals at home or at school. both schools and parents need to change their attitudes.

And to any one who says my child is fussy e.c.t and wont eat is say get some backbone and responsibility and make your child eat it. Its called discipline, its not that hard (coming from a 19 year old,,,,oops)

I agree and that is why we send ours to school with packed lunches.

I would like schools to make more healthy meals, but I admit I would be worried if they started using the language used on the TV program. Why do all TV chefs feel the need to swear at every opportunity? Is it part of their training?

Every single restaurant I've ever worked at, the chef's we've had employed swear like that. Which is why when you see it on TV and there's a huge outcry about people putting it on for the camera's, it's simply not true!

It comes from the environment they work in (most chef's work 15/16 hour days, locked in a room with no females, often in kitchen's with no windows, and hour break if they're lucky) and the stress of the job. It's their way of dealing with the crap they get put through!

I think a lot of people signed the Feed Me Better petition after following the link on this thread (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31159) a couple of weeks ago.

However, for those that missed it/did not see it first time around, please sign :D

Here is another bit of info relating to something good for our children.

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO CHILDHOOD?
aspects of the need for a different approach to education.

Are we in danger of speeding up our children’s development, to the detriment of their overall wellbeing?

A talk by Dr Bodo Gottschalk, GP and school doctor at several Steiner Waldorf schools.

The Steiner Waldorf Schools movement has over 880 schools worldwide, over 30 of which are in the UK. The curriculum is aimed at fostering a healthy development of the whole child – HEAD, HEART and HANDS, or THINKING, FEELING and DOING.

We've followed with interest a wide range of Jamie related discussion on the forum over the last few weeks and after all the debate and discussion of the rights and wrongs and so forth of Jamie himself, a little cynical thought has occurred:

What if the whole project is in fact a magnificent vote-winning spinathon?

It all seems a little convenient that on the week that the last programme goes out the Labour Party issues a "we love you all you normal people" type statement on education and that school meals is right at the top of the agenda.

This from the Labour Party (http://labour.org.uk/ac2004news?ux_news_id=labouronthesideofparents):

I want to concentrate on three areas. First, raising the standard and quality of school meals.

"Labour is committed to raising the nutritional standard of school meals. From this September we are introducing minimum standards on fat, sugar and salt content. We intend to introduce tougher nutritional standards from September 2006. more... (http://labour.org.uk/ac2004news?ux_news_id=labouronthesideofparents)

Now of course it might not all be a set up at all, merely a bit of blatant opportunism... but it makes you wonder quite where the whole idea came from and how the timing of it fell out so nicely.

Of course the food still really needs fixing

Well done, jamie!

My kids have watched every episode and loved - and agreed with - it. (I think the swearing drew them in, they ****** themselves laughing at him, still he got his message over to them.)

I just wish he'd drop the meat and cheese :(
