Fool that I am, I've gone back to the store that has treated me like s**t in the past.

I have bought some writable CD's, the problem is they are twice the thickness of normal CD's (I've no idea why), and don't work in my CD writer, infact they don't even fit in it.

Do you think i have good grounds to go and ask for my money back ?

maplins are stupidly expensive for media! :P how can they be twice as thick? that makes no sense to me :?

Are you sure you don't have 2 stuck together? :)

Daft as it seems, I thought that, but no, it's a realy, realy thick disk, all 5 are like that.

The only reason I went there is 'cause I was passing and only needed 5 disks, not a cake of 100.

OMG, on closer inspection, every case contains 2 disks stcuk together, I have priced them apart, so now I have 10 disks.

I wonder if they will work.

I do feel a fool.

If they work your data will probably disappear pretty quickly, the coating is almost certainly damaged.

I'm only using them to make CD's to play in the car so it doesn't matter if they don't last long.

You think you feel like a fool, i was sat for half an hour this afternoon unable to understand why my new laptop wasn't powering up, having images of going back to the guy to debate over the faulty machine......

When I glanced at the plug socket and realised i'd not switched it on

The battery had died and i'd not put the mains on...I blame it on the sheer mental challenge of networking it up *cough*

Least you got 10 for the price of five lol
just hope the maplin police don't visit here ;)

Imagine how you'd have felt if you had gone back to Maplins complaining about the disks only to have the assistant separate them in front of you. :hihi:

I wont go in there at all now.

I used to go in for the odd item for work but got fed up of having to put up with their attitude.

There is a bloke about my age who serve's no other purpose than to annoy people by talking down to them and making out they know nothing.

I dont know his name but I can see his miserable face now and it makes me wish he was on fire, so I could put the flames out with a cricket bat.

*and relax*

For computer related items, you would be better off going to the Don Valley computer fair, which is held every month.

I generally only going into maplins for audio and electrical equipment, I know better places to get both... but maplins is just convienently placed in town... whereas Richer Sounds and Bardwells are well... a fair travel from the centre :(

but for computer parts and media, seesh, I think even Dixons are better priced?? maplins are VERY expensive for computer parts... if you want media in future check out www.svp.co.uk they're ace! but seriously everybody...

maplins for computer parts = no!

I may be generalising a bit here :) but Maplins employees are usually people who used to work in PC World but think they know everything there is to know about computers and technology so want to work somewhere with even more technical stuff. This means they are often like talking down to people as they know "everything".

there are a couple of employees that know their stuff... but I'd like to bet I know more about computers than them all... and I'm pretty sure I can hold up on the electrical and audio/video sections too... unfortunatly they couldn't afford me :hihi:

but seriously, they are very dim some of them, you ask them for a scart lead and they come back with an S-video lead :hihi: then they actually find a scart lead and try and fob you off with a £20 gold plated one... now I know that they are better, but if you know anything about audio/video you know the difference is only really seen when you have a very expensive set-up... as a 20 year old student, does it look like I want to buy a £20 scart lead for a 14" TV? lol

I dont even bother asking the staff anything in that place anymore, I'd rather just wander round and find what I need, you ask them where stuff is and they try and sell you crap... plus, I dont think the layout in there has changed for the last 4 years? :? so I know where to go for most stuff anyways

Ooh, anybody mind if I have a rant too?

PC World though this time, Went in yesterday, I was looking for a startech 15ft high speed usb cable, easy enough huh, £2.03 on their website...

I can't find one where all the Belkin ( are they sponsors of theirs? all you can find is Belkin) USB cables are so I go in search of the dweebs...

I find one (filling the shelves with all the customer returns) and ask politely enough for the lead I want, I get looked down on, eyebrow raised...." What do You want one of them for??

I've had alot of issues like this before in there, such as trying to sell me a whole new motherboard when lightenings taken my modem out etc, so I just asked ' what does it matter what I want it for? (I mean...really?)

Anyhow, he then goes on to point at various Belkin USB cables and say in a voice usually used for 5yr olds ' Thats a USB cable'..
:suspect:

Anyhow I pointed out the fact that he wasn't quite getting, I knew what one was, I knew what I wanted it for, what I didnt quite grasp was why they didn't seem to have any of the £2.03 cables available, yet plenty of the ones starting at £14.99....

Another PC World one which makes me chuckle now ( I even act it out again sometimes when I go in :D )

I went in, I was looking for a front USB bay panel, asked the boy working there, his surly reply being ' we don't stock those madam, i've worked here over 18 months and we've never had those in stock'

I then went and found one, coo'eed at him from very far away....waved it in the air and let him know that, for future reference, it was indeed a front USB bay....

The endless joy :D

I know this is getting off topic a bit but heres another tale about P.C World.

We has this machine in for a repair a few months ago and were having trouble finding out how long it was going to take.

After waiting a week and not hearing from them I went in and kicked off 'til the manager came down. He promised faithfully that he would ring me the following day.

He didn't.

That night my lad and I sat down with a load of A4 and drew one digit of my mobile number on each piece and stuck the lot together until we had a banner with my number in 12 inch high numbers in red feltip.

I went inthe following day and waited around until there was a few people at the repair counter and unfurled my banner.

This boy that I was talking to looked a little shocked so I explained that the manager hadn't rang as promised. We knew that he wouldn't froget or not ring on purpose so we thought he must have bad eye sight and therefore we have wrote the number a bit bigger so he can read it.

The following day the machine was back with us.

I HATE THEM. but love winding them up.

I went in the manchester one to buy a transformer. I knew exactly what I wanted because I looked it up on their website. The shop assistant then proceeded to tell me Maplins do not sell this type of transformer. And he meant Maplins in general, not just that branch because I asked them to order one for me and they wouldnt budge. Anyway in the end I went back to my office and ordered it from the maplins website and got it 2 days later!

P'raps it's just me, I've never had any problem with Maplins or PC World. I use both a lot (although obviously only when I absolutely can't wait to get a part, because it will always be cheaper to order online) and although they're both painfully expensive I've always found the staff friendly, helpful and usually almost as knowledgable as me :)

I was in PC World a month or two ago, and they told a lady before me that her computer was fu**ed and needed a full format because she had a virus... I pulled her to one side and offered to fix it, 10 mins later the computer was at my house and 10 minutes (after loading safe mode and mcafee virus scan up) all was working great... surely the "TECHNITIONS" at pc world would know how to do that... well... im not complaining, I did make 25 quid out of it :D

I hate pc world, they are only any good if you need to borrow things (i,e, routers, take them back 14 days later and say you dont want it and you get a full refund) lol.

I find the maplins on langsett road to be okay, the staff seem pleasant enough.
Useful when you need an audio connector of some sort, or an led torch (they have a good one for £9.99 in the sale, triple led and a xenon bulb).
They do have a bad habit of restocking returned parts without checking though, i'm always getting stuff home, opening it, finding that it's already been opened and resealed and that bits are missing.

I had to go in this week to order some stuff, and like you Cyclone,I found them very polite. But glad you told me about the habit of reselling returned parts. That will make me check my goods more carefully from them. Thanks for the tip.
