View Full Version : How Do You Peel Your 'Taters?
Jabberwocky 07-04-2008, 11:16 Im getting sick of peeling tatters, I hate those spud peeler things and I know its possible to buy new potatoes canned and peeled, but... theyre vile arent they?
Besides, new potatoes can be rubbed clean with a thumb, Im talking about REAL spuds! Those eight inch long monsters with eyes and dirt all over them, spuds with some fight in `em!
I use a small and very sharp knife to peel my spuds, but I take too much away aparrantly, all the goodness is just under the skin according to my other half, so Im supposed to scrape at them, not take off bloody great chunks.
In my opinion, theres more than enough goodness in the rest of the meal, so going a bit too heavy on the spud peeling doesnt do any harm.
So, bunny wabbits, what do YOU do when youre skinning your tatter? Do you use a knife? A posh potato peeler? Do you scrape at them like some dany YUPPY or like me, do you just hack away at them and hope you dont lose a thumb in the process?
Don_Kiddick 07-04-2008, 11:16 Don't peel em

more healthy & tastier washed & cooked with skins on.
foxforcefive 07-04-2008, 11:19 I've got a brilliant potato peeler, she's 11 and called Molly.
slickwitch 07-04-2008, 11:20 Making no sense to me Jabbers. Open packet, pour on boiling water, stir.
It's not Neurosurgery.
puddinburner 07-04-2008, 11:24 I too use a small knife, as those posh tatty peeling gadgets make my hand go stiff and I can't get on with them:hihi:
A spud is a spud at the end of the day, I'm always getting told off for peeling too deep, so don't worry about it.

Send her round here! Im getting sick of peeling spuds and my OH flatly refuses, besides, after six years with me in her life, I dont trust her around sharp objects.

I agree. She should be made to lick 5kg clean just for you!
Jabberwocky 07-04-2008, 11:29 I leave the skins on carrots and mushrooms and get a right bollo-- telling off for it, but if theyre washed then it doesnt do any harm does it?

My god thats something Id pay to watch.
Im not kinky or anything.

I peel carrots, never mushrooms unless they look a bit manky:gag:

When my oh makes the grub she always peels the `srooms, she puts them onto a plate ready to lob into the composter, but I get there first, and hover around the kitchen eating anything she doesnt constantly watch and I love mushroom skins, manky or not!
Jabberwocky 07-04-2008, 11:33 Come to think of it, she throws the stems from the mushrooms away too!
She only uses the disc part of them.
*Wallace* 07-04-2008, 11:46 I use a peeler,it's swiss made by the "swiss army knife" people it is so easy to use and just takes the very top layer of the taters, wouldn't be without it.
Jabberwocky 07-04-2008, 11:49 Ive tried a peeler in the past but ended up with peeled fingers- I rush all the time with spuds because I hate peeling and preparing them, the only thing I like about the peeling part is shoving the skins into the composter-I even try to save the muck that falls off.

Serious question this time. Do you really put tater skins in the composter. I never do or citrus fruit peel either, (only 'cos it said not to on the box)

I stick everything in there! Even cardboard egg boxes and newspapers.
The soil is lovely that comes out the other end and I dont think I had any problems with peels from oranges and what have you- I even stuff egg shells in there.
Yes I put everything else in, including eggs, I'll start and put them in now. (Can you put in dog poo?)

They strongly advise against animal crap or meat so thats one thing I dont put into it, I was tempted to attach a bog seat to mine with a bog roll holder and a magazine rack, but the neighbours are a bit touchy here so I imagine theyd complain if they saw me taking a lesiurely dump in my garden :D
