Sorry deano, the only information I have is, it was somewhere within what is now the Charnock Hall Estate. My grandmother would be living there in the late 18 hundreds

Hi Magee,

My owd granny used to tell me she'd been in service at Charnock Hall before she got married. Coincidentally(or are we somehow talking about the same person?), her name was Mary Rhodes and she had two sisters - Rebecca and Agnes. They came from Beighton.

If you look on the grass verge outside St Peters church on White Lane, Gleadless, you can see a large rectangular stone. This stone is from the old Charnock Hall building and has a descriptive plaque on it.

The building was located I think on the top of Charnock Hall Road and I bet that the people living there now have stones in their gardens from this building without even knowing it.

Buy a copy of the book about historic Gleadless. I think its written by Pauline Shearstone or a name similar. You can still get a copy I think from the Post Office at Gleadless Townend, thats where I got mine from.:D

No, nothing on picture sheffield for charnock, but plenty for nearby gleadless.

There are some old maps on www.gleadless.net that show maps of the area.

I used to live at 47 Charnock Grove. It is an end Semi.
The rear garden backed onto other Semi's, but there was a natural strip of land between them. A neighbour whose garden met ours from the side, both he nad ourselves had quite a few old stones and I remember talking to him about the site. He told me that where his garden and ours was used to be the farm yard. and his house was on the old farm building site. He certainly said that he remembered the old pig pens at a point which seperated our two gardens. He said that the strip of land used to be the track entrance to the farm.
? Could this farm be Charnock Hall. I have no idea but thought that it may give some clue.

Hi 399Leighton

Think the stones you mention maybe from Charnock Hall Farm not the Hall, don't think it is the same building.

Know the farmer Rhodes who lives down High Lane, was the farm across from The Old Harrow a rhodes owned property too? No idea where Charnock Hall was though as well before my time, did attend Charnock school happy days!

Carter lodge and carter knowle are farms, but I guess Charnock Hall must have been an actual Hall not farm.
