I recently had my connection bumped up to 8mb. The problem is i am struggling to get over 1.5mb for the last 2 weeks or so. My connection log says:

ADSL Link..... Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed..... 7360 kbps, 448 kbps
Line Attenuation..... 43 db, 13.5 db
Noise Margin..... 2147483647 db, 29 db

Why is my log saying that i have a 7mb connection yet i can not get anywhere near that? Also... Whats happening with the downstream noise margin? :o

The speed stated in your modem/router info/config pages is only your sync speed, not actual throughput speed.

Unless you can reach out the window & slap your phone exchange you ain't getting 8mb.

Have a look somewhere like here (http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html) for a better idea.

Yeah i realise that steev bit until 2 weeks ago i was hovering around 4mb. Running the speedtest you linked gave me 1.1mb.

And what is with that noise margin? I just checked it again and it's at:
Noise Margin 2147483646 db 29 db
Surely that isn't normal? :o

Bumping again. Surely someone knows what this reading means. It look excessive to say the least :s

Connection Speed 7360 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 43 db 13.5 db
Noise Margin 2147483646 db 29 db

You could be picking up electrical interference from somewhere, Make sure your router isnt near any "noise" sources.

CRT monitors, power supplies or anything with an electric motor can interfere with the router.

Do you use an telephone extension cable with the router?

You can run a speed test at http://www.speedtester.bt.com - this will show you the current line profile you're being assigned. Make sure you're not using any other programs that access the internet when you're doing this test as that will invalidate the result.

If the line profile is around the 6000 - 6500kb/s mark then your slowdown is being caused by your ISP, probably because you've downloaded more than your monthly allowance.

If it's significantly below that then there's probably a line fault that's caused your profile to drop below what it should be, and this will need to be reported to your ISP to be fixed. Either that or you're still within the 10 day training period - is it less than 10 days since your upgrade? - and your line is still learning its ideal limits of operation. In which case wait till it's 10 days since and if it's still playing up then give your ISP a shout.

That's pretty general info but should give you some idea as to what's going on, hope that helps.

If you've got any concerns about your line quality, give me a bell I can relocate your master socket to where ever your Router/Modem is, even fit a v10 face plate eliminating the need for ADSL Filters (and connections).
