View Full Version : No water in Sheffield!
I live in the city centre, just off West Street. About an hour ago I went to make a drink and no water came out of the tap!!
Have called Yorkshire Water and apparently there is contractor damage to more than one of their main lines and there is a large area of Sheffield off. My landlord has heard that it is off as far as up Ecclesall Road. Does anyone know if it's off any further afield?
According to the Yorkshire Water recorded message they don't yet have an estimated time for the water to be back on.
See other thread about Hillsborough flooding - probably the same thing.
Could this be related to this thread? http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32899
Sounds BAD if it is! :help:
I can envisage Yorkshire Water implementing a hose-pipe ban for the rest of the year now!
I must've been typing the above when feargal posted, sorry.
Flippin' heck! I had seen that thread but not really made the connection... must be the dehydration :hihi:
I dread to think how long it's going to take! Of course it would be the day that in my infinite wisdom I decided to do the cleaning then take a shower...only I never got to the shower bit before the water went off. Lovely. :gag:
Am I allowed to go home if there's no water at work to flush the loo! :heyhey:

Get your bikini on and head to the Peace Gardens :)
nic_scarlet 18-03-2005, 13:24 We have lost ours, and I think there's a burst main or something.... Hunter's Bar are
Edit: just noticed the other post...
neeeeeeeeeek 18-03-2005, 13:35 Water off in Burngreave. Someone somewhere is gunna be in trouble!!
haahaa- there is gonna be a load of smelly people out round town tonight!!!
Break out the 'shower in a can' (aka- lynx)
genesiscouch 18-03-2005, 13:38 Well it looks like there's no water here either (Victoria Street). So much for showering after my run! The University just emailed this:
Yorkshire Water has reported a major burst in this area.
Areas which are known to be affected so far, include:
Brunswick Street
West Street
Victoria Street
We recommend you refrain from using the taps and toilets as much as possible
until this problem has been resolved.
If no cold water is available in your building, please do not use the
remaining supply of hot water and this could cause damage to the hot water
system.
Yorkshire Water engineers are attending site and as soon as the problem has
been rectified we will let you know.
nic_scarlet 18-03-2005, 13:44 We've got no water here just off Eccleshall Rd
Phanerothyme 18-03-2005, 13:49 No water in Nether Edge (empire road) either. Just a gurgling noise, which is no good for making tea.
Switching to beer (at work too yay!!)
This could be a very big problem - what do the hospitals do for water?
Bad_Hair_Day 18-03-2005, 13:49 Not sure how true this is and I don't want to spoil everyone's night out, but apparantly if pubs & restaurants haven't got a water supply and can't provide flushing toilets then they have to close! :-(

I would think hospitals have very big cisterns.
We've just had this from Sheffield Hallam
MAJOR WATER PROBLEM - SHEFFIELD DISTRICTS S1 AND S2
Yorkshire water have advised us of a major mains water failure in Sheffield City Centre. At present they do not know the cause or how long it will take to resolve. This means that some of our buildings will have no water to toilets and other facilities and our tank fed buildings will fail within the next hour.
We will keep the situation updated as and when we know
Sounds like quite a big problem.
If so much of the city has lost pressure then it must be more than a burst water main.
beansfeast 18-03-2005, 14:01 Just backing it up really, no water on Leopold St.
How does this stand with regards to fire health and safety? Also, if toilets don't work etc do you still have to work? (Hope not!) :heyhey:
Methinks im showering at my house in rotherham before coming to my girlfriends before we go out tonight!!!
Everyone here has ambled off home so I'm going to take the cautious approach and switch off the lasers and anything that has a water cooling system.... *whimper* :help: I don't like making big decisions like this by myself! :o :( Still, just switching stuff off isn't going to do any harm anyway... just means I really *can't* do any work! :D

Don't happen to work in the local power station do you!? I'm not sure it would be a good idea to turn EVERYTHING off!

Argh! I didn't think of that. All of the microscopes are water cooled. This could be a big problem. My supervisor and manager are away too, so there's only me here to look after everything. :(

I am indeed running an evil lair, but it's mine, all mine! *cackles* :P
Martin_s 18-03-2005, 14:10 Re: water cooling... you might want to check that your cooling systems aren't closed loop systems... ie: they don't take any new cold water in...
If they are closed loop cooling then you don't need to turn them off at all... but if they rely on the cold water supply, turn them off like now!!

I've just turned off all the lasers in our research labs as they do rely on the water supply, they have to turned off of an evening anyway so its not big deal, I've just never had to do it myself... and I'm sure there was some special order you have to switch them off in *shrug* :suspect: Oh well, its done now... :P
Check. All microscopes are on a closed loop cooling system. At least that means I haven't got to make the decision to turn them off. Right, is there anything else here that may be using water? :suspect:

if they're gas lasers you should leave the water running for at least 10 mins after you switch off to let the tube cool down and lesson the chances of it cracking

Thanks  I remembered to do this, and wait before I switched off the main unit :) Actually someone from my group just reappeared and I told him what procedure I used and he said I got it just right, so phew! No Water Drama Friday! :D
that would explain the big queue down walkley lane and the police closing some of the roads.
Fortunately we still seem to have water though.

Yay for you Tracie. Remaining cool under pressure! Unlike me who is hiding and hoping it'll all go away. It will, wont it?
Oh well, at half 4 I'm going back to Liverpool to get a shower and drink some water, followed by beer, followed by more water. I may fill a bucket with water and put my feet in it. Just because I can :)
If this turns out to be a crisis, I apologise for the poor taste of the above comment.
Martin_s 18-03-2005, 14:34 Times like this I sometimes wonder if it wouldn't be a good idea to have a contact with the road traffic people who could provide us with any closed road details and suggested alternate routes.
Something like that right now would save a lot of time and get things sorted quicker I suspect...
muddycoffee 18-03-2005, 14:42 Where I am at heeley, the water is still flowing ok but extremely low pressure. I noticed that traffic through woodseats was very slow, much slower than usual for a friday.
msbehavin 18-03-2005, 14:45 Splish Splash I was taking a bath.....!!!
All present and correct water wise at Woodseats - baths/ showers at £2 a time anyone??
(gotta admire my entrepreneurial spirit!)
x_LoUiSe_x 18-03-2005, 14:51 well we r ok in shiregreen so if u know ppl in shiregreen pop round to theirs for a cuppa n a bath, lol!
Plain Talker 18-03-2005, 14:56 I am in the psalter lane area, and the water is fine here.

No, it always smells like that.
(forgive me)
craigmason 18-03-2005, 15:11 :hihi: :hihi: :hihi: we have loads of water here i will sell you some £10 a bottle
Update from Hallam:
We are advised that a contractor has broken through a 27" Main in the Hillsborough area. Up to 250,000 cubic metres of water have been lost within the first 50 minutes and the area is extremely hazardous.
Yorkshire Water are hoping to re-route the water supplies and reinstate within 2-3 Hours.
Our view is that this appears to be a major failure of a main water supply route into Sheffield and that the estimate to restore water may well be conservative - we would advise you plan for a much longer water outage.
Moonfire 18-03-2005, 15:21 The water is back on in S3 :D :D :D

Lucy_Smith 18-03-2005, 15:43 We haven't had water here (Eccy Road area) for a bit but it seems to be back on now. It's brown though so would hazard a guess and say it's not drinkable!
Euuucchhhh. Best boil it/drink beer

What floor are you on because I'm in the same building and I'm still waterless??!!
My boyfriend has just arrived to visit and he is horrified...he's never seen me with such unwashed hair!! :hihi: :hihi: :hihi:
Floor 6. I feel for you - you dont realise how much you need it until its not there!
Ooh got some!! but it's still very spluttery.
My g/f put the bath on to run before, she came back and was greeted by a nice bath of brown stuff. The smile was soon wiped off my face however when I realised I'd just boiled my pasta in it. Tasted good though.
The toilet water also looks like someone has had a jippy tummy :D
green_ben 18-03-2005, 20:36 I got an e-mail saying not to use the hot water cos it will damage the system !

There's a photo in tonight's Star of a collection of people looking down the hole photographed elsewhere on this thread (as in there's a hole in the road, and the Police are looking into it :D )
How many of these people are Forummers? Which one is you?
Or was it this thread?

You do realise this thread is 5 years old?
And your pipes have probably froze or something...
Lol, quality, I love it when people do that...I really don't know where you manage to find the old threads and put them together with a current discussion?
