View Full Version : Exercising with baby?
honeyb35 04-04-2008, 12:31 is there such a thing as an exercise class that you can take your child to? I need to tone up to prevent future back problems as recommended by my physio, but would find it difficult to get a babysitter for my 15m old daughter. I've seen american classes where you exercise in a fun way alongside baby (might get her walking as well lol)
ideally an afternoon one if possible? or any similar dvds that i can do at home?
treadlightly 04-04-2008, 12:46 What a good questions honeyb. It is something I could really do with too, but havne't put my mind to it. I will watch this thread with interest.:)
mbunting 04-04-2008, 13:16 I believe that there are classes like this out there, Queens Park swimming baths in Chesterfield do a couple of classes which are run by midwives, one in water and one out I think. There is a safe area to leave babies or kids can be included in the workout (again this is from memory so please don't shoot me if I am mistaken).
Best way to find out about this kind of thing in your area is to speak to your health visitor or maybe the practice nurse at your doctors if you don't see the HV.
I really need to get into some kind of exercise again. ;0(
honeyb35 04-04-2008, 13:21 thats the kind of thing, although i'd prefer land based (dont fancy being seen in a cossie yet  ) maybe aerobics, throwing the baby over your head for weighlifting kind of thing....:hihi:
mbunting 04-04-2008, 13:28 Your LO would probably enjoy being thrown around a bit, LOL. I have heard about classes (land based) which use the obliging babies as weights during exercise. In a safe and controlled manner of course. I just keep remembering all the old magazine tips about making your own weights out of bottles of water and cans of beans.
I certainly made my own weight this time !! He He ;0)

LeighBrown 19-04-2008, 16:21 Hi,
I teach classes for Pure Pilates in Netheredge especially for New Mums to bring their babies along to as well. The Post Natal New Mums & bring baby exercise classes are held on a Wed & Thurs morning at 10:45am for an hour. They take a maximum of 10 New Mums and you need to complete a health questionnaire beforehand and booking via www.SheffieldPilates.co.uk. We focus on safely regaining abdominal tone, as well as pelvic floor exercises & stretch at the end. It's a baby friendly room and no amount of crying puts the mums off from working hard!

honeyb35 19-04-2008, 21:06 thats interesting, I'm not a 'new' mum tho, would I still be able to come?
LeighBrown 20-04-2008, 10:16 Hi Honeyb35,
The post natal period is from 7 weeks up to 12 months after delivery of your baby.
How old is your baby?
honeyb35 20-04-2008, 10:17 shes 16months now :(
Hi,
Not quite the same but I noticed that Hillsborough Leisure centre have a creche which takes children from 12 months.
I used to use the creche there with my eldest but it was a while ago & she was about 3 at the time. It is quite expensive if you pay per class but I think the monthly fee (which includes all the classes) for off peak is quite reasonable. I used to do Yoga on a Tuesday morning (& I think Pliates on a Monday). If its the same Yoga tutor she was brilliant
I keep meaning to give it a try but am just worried how Babybell would settle.

yeh thats what worries me - I know Nat wouldnt settle! She's a clingy mummies girl, bit annoying but secretly I'm enjoying it as the other 2 are all for their daddy! :hihi:

SpeedDemon 17-05-2008, 08:50 How about.....getting lots of mums together, now that the weather's (supposedly) getting better, and going for long walks round rother valley or something like that? Good excuse to meet other people, have a gossip, make new friends, kids play together, and exercise at the same time but without really realising it? :)
This comes from someone who is positively allergic to any kind of "arranged exercise" but is quite happy to walk with kids n hound :hihi:
littlestarshine 17-05-2008, 08:53 Its a great point honey, we ahve kids the same age (as you know) i think we should set up a mums walking group at high green, babies in prams go for a walk stop along the way and have a throw about of the kids then walk back! Can i have nat tho? Lily is 29 1/2 lb :(

littlestarshine 17-05-2008, 08:56 Honeyb has just moved house shes not on the net yet but we are going to have mummy time tonight (vodka and karaoke) I'll ask her then about it but look for something in the near future
SpeedDemon 17-05-2008, 08:58 hehehe - i just need to get this baby out, coupla weeks to recover, then "have car, will travel" lol School summer hols won't be that far off by then either, so I'll have 5 of the little darlings (?) to keep entertained, so if anyone has older kids n fancies doing the park / picnic type of thing, that would be great too. I'm determined I'm not gonna stay this size after I've had the baby (no excuses now!) so I really need to get out n about

Im not far behind you on that one,, i have 4!
SpeedDemon 17-05-2008, 09:06 Definitely need to sort something out for those long summer hols then. My eldest daughter is 12 so she'll chase the wayward toddlers who run off. My eldest son is 9, he's great with babies, my youngest son is almost 8 but lives on his own planet, so i have to keep an eye on that 1! lol Then there'll be the 2 babies.

Namaste,
LLI've been thinking about coming along to these with my 18 month old. What does it cost?
RozeePozee 17-05-2008, 13:28 Oh and the best exercise I found with the baby was just pushing him in a pram. Once I resolved to try to walk to as many places as possible my baby weight fell off! And it saves on petrol too!
LouLounHarry 14-07-2008, 19:49 Hi Ladies,
I know some of you have expressed an interest in the Mum and Baby YOga before so I just wanted to let you know that we are setting up a new class in Walkley (from September) and also Beighton (end of July).
The Buddhist Centre will be every Monday 11:00 - 12:00 for an initial 11 week period. Please contact them if you are interested in the Walkey class.
