View Full Version : Game emulation, do you partake?
DeathAxe 04-04-2008, 10:32 I was just wondering how many people know about this sort of thing. It has been my intrest for quite a few years. Emulators enable you to play older games on your pc that were not ment for it. Allsorts from spectrum, megadrive to sega saturn and playstation.
The best one though is MAME (multiple arcade machine emulator) emulates thousands of arcade games from all sorts of eras. The games that run on emulators are taken from their original media (wheather it be tapes, carts, discs or arcade boards) and the data transfered to files in which load in the emulator.
Legality of obtaining the games is a seperate issue.
What old games do you play?
alkatraz 04-04-2008, 10:46 Sonic (Genesis)
Mario (SNES)
Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2/3 (PSONE)
Super Mario Bros 2 and 3 (NES)
Super Mario Land 2 (Gameboy)
Tetris (Gameboy)
Robocop (ZX Spectrum)
sallonoroff 04-04-2008, 11:45 I love all the old classics... Chuckie Egg, Ugh!, Donkey Kong, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Road Rash... to name a few.
.
Dizzy FTW! I have fond memories of saving up all week to go to Micro Fun on Holme Lane every few weeks to spend £2.99 on the latest Dizzy games! :D
That franchise is LONG overdue for a next gen update IMO, as are the Seymour games, remember Seymour goes to Hollywood, Wild West Seymour, Sgt Seymour: Blob Cop, and Stuntman Seymour? Great games, despite the fact that Sgt Seymour was a blatant unapologetic Pengu clone.
NEKRO138 04-04-2008, 11:50 I had a game for my Snes emulator called Packy and Marlon. You had to control a diabetic elephant, guiding him to the right foods. Bizarre.
alchresearch 04-04-2008, 11:51 Do you not play "Egghead" Rich?
alkatraz 04-04-2008, 11:52 It's not *strictly* emulation as although I *could* run it in an Amiga emulator, there are some ported PC versions...
Leisure Suit Larry FTW!!
** EDIT **
I should be more specific:
Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards
Do you not play "Egghead" Rich?
What is this Egghead thing?
PM me if you want.
alchresearch 04-04-2008, 12:12 A series of egg based games for the Spectrum by Johnathan Cauldwell.
Obviously not "Dizzy" graphics standard but good fun.

Eric_Collins 04-04-2008, 15:49 Operation Thunderbolt - MAME
Golden Axe - Genesis
on my phone i have 3000 + NES games
On my GBA i have every GameGear game and NES which i play Sonic and 1943 pretty much all the time.
Eric_Collins 04-04-2008, 15:53 Honest you can stick DX10 up your rear. Today's modern game are all shine and glitz but game play is very very lacking. I'm sick of 1st person shooters , Give me games that take some thinking about and intelligence.
How many ways on a FPS can you kill people and think pffff same old same old. I still play Medal of honor as nothing really much beats it. :hihi::hihi:
I like MAME as well, it's nice to finally get to finish some of those old arcade games without a wheelbarrow full of 10 pences... :hihi:

demoniac 05-04-2008, 13:41 i used to play on emus all the time but i can never find the effort at start them now lol
I like to recap them good old amaiga days on my pc :)
thats said nothing beats the sight of an amiga 1200 under the TV :)
Guantlet was ace! We could play it all day on one 10p, if you learned the layout of all the levels, you could just blast through really quick grabbing all the food (probably elf was fave character for this). I remeber one day, some guy joined in, after I'd been playing for a few hours, and he put his 10p in my characters slot; which immediately halved my final score.
Also used to play Starforce a lot; they had it in 'Stories' amusmend arcade on Matilda street in Sheffield.
Arcade emulation on a PC, is fine, but you doing get the same atmosphere somehow, as you did playing games in the arcade (talking like 20 years ago). All the bleeps and sounds and seeing the same people down there.
Krull was fab too.
Games just seemed so much better back then.
EDIT: old git that I am!

I've got the orchestral arranged soundtrack to Actraiser by Yuzo Koshiro, if you like the game music I'd highly recommend it.
beansforyou 29-04-2008, 14:47 My lad wants to play SUper Metroid, is there a way he can do this without having to buy a second hand SNES?
Can he play it on the PC or his DS or something?

get yourself the Snes (http://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/snes/) emulator from here and some roms from here (http://romhustler.net/roms/snes) :D
segasonic 29-04-2008, 14:57 SNES9X or ZSNES are the best ones to try. I use SNES9X but I hear good things about ZSNES, it's really caught up apparently.
beansforyou 29-04-2008, 17:44 Thanks i'll have a look into it :)

Actually there is a DS version of Metroid.
But for Super Metroid itself, it's on the Wii's "Virtual Console" service iirc.
Beakerzoid 29-04-2008, 23:21 I've played on more than my fair share of retro emulators (and machines - I still own all my old computers and consoles right back to the days of the Grandstand). Emulator wise I have MAME with an extensive (read 4Gb worth) or game roms (and cabinet images) which sees regular usage. I also run my ZX Specy emulator to play the Magic Knight series of games a bit recently, and my PC Engine emulator (Magic Engine) for Parasol Stars (it was the best conversion of the game on the PCE). I occasionally boot up my Mega Drive emulator, but not as much these days.
Oh, also went through my old ST games a while back via emulation. Millenium 2.2 is still a marvellous game today :)
Yup, old gaming is quite a large part of my gaming life. I subscribe to Retro Gamer magazine (even made it onto the letter page this month in the forum question section) and tend to read an article there, then seek out the relevant rom to play whatever games they highlight that month.

King of boxer is indeed ace. I once got to something like 6 fighters in on that game, I only did it the once but I did have a witness. Loved the massive knockouts from a well placed uppercut. :D
Yuzo Koshiro is a god too, he created some great 16 bit tunes. Is he still around I wonder.

YK is still around, he's got his own company now I think. He's still doing game music too, most recently some of the music for Smash Bros on the Wii. :)
I prefer his old stuff; The Super Shinobi, Bare Knuckle I/II/III, Super Adventure Island, Actraiser and Slap Fight MD all get regular play.
SimpyTimpy 30-04-2008, 10:44 Super Mario Bros 2 and 3 (NES)
Super Mario Land 2 (Gameboy)

Super Mario Bros. 3 is quite possibly my favourite game of all time.
Don't want to play it again though, I like the memories I already have. Played Golden Eye on the N64 a couple of a weeks ago and it was aweful - I remembered it being superb!
would love to have one for the n64 how easy are they to set up ayway ?
baby_sarah 30-04-2008, 13:19 n64 is very easy but i find that not all games run that smoothly such as
mario kart 64
diddy kong racing 64
mainly car games dont run very smoothly
apart from that it is very good for gameplay

segasonic 30-04-2008, 15:11 Have you ever kissed a girl, son? ;)
No but I often dream about what it would be like.
(My Mrs is too busy being better than me on Snake Rattle & Roll on the NES for those sort of shenanigans.)
neeeeeeeeeek 30-04-2008, 15:16 If someone gets really bored can they try and get a Dragon 32 emulator that works, I wan't to play Leggit and Time Bandit.
Please....

I think MESS emulates the Dragon series - it's based off of MAME but emulates home machines instead of arcades.
