View Full Version : Who is the worst actor currently working in Hollywood?

Having cringed my way through two recent performances, Hayden Christiensen in Jumper and Matthew Fox in Vantage Point I pondered the above....

Im not sure that people like paris hilton really count because I dont even class her as an actress, Im talking about those actors who star in movie after movie getting paid top dollar and just keep getting away with it

Andie MacDowell has been in a fair few successful films, despite being as wooden as her surname suggests.

Orlando Bloom is blandly one-dimensional too. Taking liberties with the thread title and reaching back to the 90s, there's always Schwarzenegger.

Ah but Arnie did what he did well. Brando he wasn't, but he was a bolt-hard bloke who could single-handedly fire an M60, and take out whole militia units in one go...normally just after delivering a killer one liner. Thats all you need in those films:)

But modern day? I like the guy, but apart from a couple, Keanu has been pretty wooden...and if she still counts then i think Liz Hurley gets my vote too. Nice knockers though.

Agree with you on Orlando Bloom. I can't remember what he was like in LOTR, but I found him cringe worthy in the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

To be fair I can't really think of one bad actor off the top of my head. Examples in the past have seen so-called bad actors shine when handled by a great director. Look at DiCaprio - came across as a talentless pretty-boy for years. Now, under the expert wing of Scorcese, he shines. Even Hayden Christensen showed some ability in Shattered Glass (and to some degree in Awake - out today). My personal hatred to Adam "I'm not as funny as I think I am" Sandler is cast aside whenever I rewatch Punch Drunk Love or Reign Over Me, and instead I see a damned decent actor who tends to sign up to rubbish comedies.

Even legends can come across as quite wooden. Take, for example (and I have been flamed for this on many occasions), Clint Eastwood. He ranks alongside Arnie for me - low on actual acting ability, but fantastic screen presence more than makes up for it (and for the record I own every Eastwood film to date).

Some actors can appear terrible when they are the lead star in a film, but are strong as secondary cast. John C Reilly was terrible in Dewey Cox, but is fantastic when backing up another star. Even Orlando Bloom managed to carry some weight when riding the coattails of Depp in the Pirates films.

I seriously believe that a lot of the time it is not the actor/actress that is bad, just the material or way they are handled by the director.

But DiCaprio was absolutely FANTASTIC in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape", which was either his first film or an early one he made. The raw material was clearly there for a director to work with.

I've always found Andie MacDowell almost impossible to watch, she makes me want to grind my teeth in frustration at her lack of ability to convey the slightest degree of emotion whatsoever.

Orlando Bloom is a good candidate for the worst actor

My initial reaction was Vin Deisel (sp?) as he can barely even talk, the only film of his I've seen which was any good was 'Pitch Black' and that was good in spite of him.

I'll have a proper think and come back...

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, his last few films have sucked IMO.. As an actor he makes a great WWE Wrestler.

As for Keira Knightley, she can't act, but she does have *ahem* other redeeming qualities!

I don't really count The Rock and Vinnie Jones etc, because they haven't really spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on acting school. What really grinds me are badly acted cameo appearances like Stan Lee jitter-juttering his way through a few seconds of film. It's embarrassing to see.

What, like the fact that she can't open her mouth when she speaks, so she is always talking through her teeth, the fact that she can't act, the fact that she isn't that pretty, and is just extremely skinny - but still considered curvy?!?!

I think Keira Knightley is the most over-rated that comes to mind. But al least she tries some different roles. To me there is a huge difference to an actor and a movie star.

Movie Stars are essentially the same character in most films they appear in e.g. Eddie Murphy, Kate Hudson, Matthew Mae Me Moanconaghy, etc.

Certainly not jealousy- whats to be jealous about, he`s him and I`m me.

He IS pretty, and thats his shield against his ratty acting, take the Sweeny Todd thing he recently did as an example, his "English" accent was worse than Dick Van Dykes in Mary Poppins.

Give it a decade and people will realise exactly how bad he is and there will be lots of fun as people start to emulate that accent, then they`ll start to scrutinize his other movies...

I could mention other movies hes been in- and I must admit that he was hilarious in The Fast show when he made a cameo appearance, but ... his acting is FOUL! He wouldnt have lasted 10 minutes in a 50s or 60s movie because then people actually saw acting as an art form, not a means to get rich and try to be pretty at the cost of their art.

Keanu Reeves - Bram Stoker's Dracula - appaling
Kevin Costner and Christian Slater in 'Robin Hood Prince of Thieves'. Though I think they simply gave up trying half way through the film.

And to extend it to TV: Anthony LaPaglia playing one of Daphne's Mancunian brothers in 'Frasier'. A disturbingly dreadful 'English' accent.

Out of context it isnt that funny if you havent seen the entire series.
Then theres the interview with Depp that was filmed a few months before the clip where Depp was begging to be included in a sketch.

Seen together its hilarious.

Can't believe it took three pages before someone came up with this. It was my first choice.

I saw Ken Stott in a "Hollywood" film a while ago (possibly Charlie Wilson's War) and he was shockingly bad. Loved him in Rebus. Then saw him the other day in Hancock and Joan and thought he was awful again.

That'll be Mark Kermode. "The coming together of Orloondo Bland and Ikea Knightly was like watching a pair of tables nesting".

His best review ever was Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is more enjoyable than the first Hary Potter. But then shutting your hand in the car door is more enjoyable than the first harry potter.

LOL I concur.

That inspired me to revisit a few others from the good doctor's back catalogue:

On Little Man:
This is an evil film. Genuinely evil. It's horrible, it's vile, it's the end of western civilisation as we know it. If you see this film, shame on you!
On Santa Claus 3:
The cinematic equivalent of tertiary syphilis.
And possibly best of all, a gem I'd forgotten about. On Norbit:
If you paid to see Norbit, look deep inside yourself. Look deep inside yourself and take the same amount of money you paid to see that movie and give it to a good cause because believe me, you're karmically unbalanced if you paid to see that film.

Apparently Dwayne'The Rock'Johnson has bought his trademarked name from the W.W.E, so he is no longer obligated to them in any way. If he appears on anything W.W.E related, it is his choice now, not the companies.

Hmmm.... Depends what you call 'worst actor' tbh.

Are we talking about someone who has made a pretty poor film or, someone who is pretty poor in every film?

I've never seen Ben Affleck act well but i have seen him in a few good films for example :)
