View Full Version : Students - will you live in Halls for your entire course?
neeeeeeeeeek 02-04-2008, 14:34 With all these new student villages springing up it seems that the assumption is that students don't want to live in houses with friends anymore. If your a student have you lived in a student village for the first year and are you planning to get a house with your mates in future of do you like these student villages. I guess these places are new and clean at the moment, in a couple of years they might look like Park Hill but anyway, that's another topic.
You can select more than one!
neeeeeeeeeek 02-04-2008, 14:41 Thought I would add that when I was a student I always lived in houses but guess these places have improved a bit since then.. That and students have got more boring!
:)
These 'student villages' aren't halls of residence. They are simply 4/5/6 bedroomed apartments that replicate the terrace house experience without the cockroaches, gas leaks or dodgy landlords... as many student landlords are finding out.
Students are voting with the feet in droves.
neeeeeeeeeek 02-04-2008, 14:55 Removed the word halls!
neeeeeeeeeek 02-04-2008, 14:59 So in your second year can you select who you want to live with and rent an apartment inside one of them with your mates?
Yes and you can in your first year if you know anyone. The operators prefer to rent to groups - it saves them a lot of effort and aggravation..
Amyvictoria 02-04-2008, 15:02 I can imagine students staying in the villages. As Tony says, they are just "Student Houses" without the damp and drafty windows. There is also more security in these new blocks.
While some of us may look back at our student days living in cold hovels as "charactor building" if the option of living in a nice new block of flats had been avaliable i think we may well have taken it.
How these new buildings will stand up to the riggors of housing students is still to be see. Over the next few years they might become as run down as traditional student houses.
neeeeeeeeeek 02-04-2008, 15:15 Not that I am old or anything but the Park Hill flats had just been redeveloped when I first came to Sheffield and some of the people on my course lived in the red one. They were 3 and 4 bed flats so I guess similar in design and it was the uni that they rented them out. They did not stay nice for very long and look at them now! I think I would still want to rent a house.
funkymiss 02-04-2008, 15:19 So in your second year can you select who you want to live with and rent an apartment inside one of them with your mates?
Yeah you can do that in all halls/villages.
I had some friends who lived in the old norfolk park and I felt sorry for them! Must have been like getting your leaky student house one year early. Bet the new place is nicer than most student houses though.
I had a friend at uni in Swansea, staying in the student village - they were 'encouraged' not to go in to town and 'stay on the village' :hihi: I guess they thought the takeaway and corner shop were all students need to survive :D There was this special bus to transport them into town, the whole thing was quite funny!
Merry_Legs 02-04-2008, 15:25 You forgot the option "I am a mole and I live in a hole".
You could be the first to vote on that one.

I started this poll for your bloody benefit and that's the thanks I get! Well, from the results so far I would say your screwed. Students will haunt your road forever and if they ever move out I shall rent the house next to you play Bob's girls allowed albums night and day!
neeeeeeeeeek 03-04-2008, 07:24 Most unsuccessful poll ever!
:hihi:
Merry_Legs 03-04-2008, 10:27 boohoo boohoo, I'm so upset, I'm so upset....

Easy access to town, none of your traffic problems, detached, great local pubs with the Kelham Island tavern, Milestone, Riverside.
Sorted!
my first student house was £163 p/m. The nice apartments they are putting up are now going for around £300 p/m. Ok it was 10 years since I went to uni, but surely a room in a house will still be around the £200 p/m mark than £300 mark....? £100 p/m is a lot for a student to pay for some comforts!
The rooms in the student apartments are £425 per calendar month that's just for 1 room with an ensuite twice the price of a private shared house, no wonder students have such big debts.
muddycoffee 06-04-2008, 08:09 I have been following the development of new apartments and student villages in the city with great interest. I don't think the final effect of them will be felt until they have been built for a few years. By then the rents are likely to match the expectations of the full range of students. I expect that for a while some of them will be un let as they will be a bit too expensive.
What I am more interested in though is what will happen to the large houses which traditionally served as student houses?
One of the problems with living in a student area is that it is too noisy. I moved away from my student area when I started working because it was far too disruptive for me when I was keeping regular hours.
Will these houses revert to families, will they remain as slum student digs for poorer students, will they become ghettos for immigrants or will they be bought up by developers and torn down for new student flats ?
Square-Bashe 11-04-2008, 08:52 I'm a student in my final year and have lived in student halls, a student house and am now living in private rented in Halfway. There have been many new blocks going up with have seemed to prove detrimental to the student letting agents, I work for one and it has gone rather quiet and we still have properties available.
I think that the council are planning to have all student, or a large majority of students in these student halls instead of in student houses. Will be interesting to see what happens over the next year or so to see what happens to these student properties.
