A confidential phone line has been set up by PC Mick Merritt, the Community Constable for Norfolk Park.

PC Merritt is hoping that members of the public will use the phone line to tell him about individuals who are responsible for committing offences in the Norfolk Park and City Road area. He would like to hear about the whereabouts of wanted persons. He’s looking for information about drug dealing, suspicious incidents and people acting strangely. He wants to hear about regular disqualified or drink drivers, and where or when they drive, and even about minor matters such as drivers with no current tax disc in their vehicles.

He said: "We want as much information as possible as that makes it easier for us to take action. Most importantly, we need names and we need locations.

"The idea behind this is to encourage people to come forward who would otherwise be reluctant to report things to the police. We don’t find out about a lot of offences because members of the public withhold information if they fear that they will suffer repercussions. They’re afraid that their name and address will be disclosed or that someone who has been reported to the police will find out who has reported them.

"I want to assure people that the information line will be completely confidential. No name, address or phone number need be given. " The number of the phone line is 0114 296 4252. It is linked to a voicemail service that will be checked daily. The number should not be used to report a crime or an incident requiring urgent police attendance.

I like the idea - sounds very pioneering! However, so long as that doesn't give the rozzers the right to act with complete impunity, just because somebody has said X,Y or Z were doing A,B and C if you will forgive the term!
