View Full Version : No sound from YouTube
I have no sound when I play a YouTube video. All other aspects of computer sound (iTunes, other web sites etc) are working fine. The problem appeared yesterday. I haven't installed/uninstalled anything or otherwise changed any settings.
Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Any ideas how to resolve it?
beansforyou 01-04-2008, 09:15 This happens to us occasionally, if we've had the same window open for ages and watched a few videos.
We just close firefox down then start again, and it seems to work.
sTaGeWaLkEr 01-04-2008, 09:22 All seems to be well here, youtubewise...
Crumbs...I had this problem once, I'm not sure if I wrote the solution anywhere....with me it was all Flash based video that had no sound.
I get that problem occasionally.Just switching the computer off, wait a few seconds ,then back on seems to rectify the fault

That might not be such a bad thing today - have you clicked on any of the featured videos?
Thanks for the replies and the advice. Neither closing down the browser nor turning the computer off and back on again made a difference. I've tried YouTube on the laptop, where it works fine, so it must be something inherent to the other computer.
I'll try reinstalling Flash, though why that should suddenly stop working I've no idea (plus it still works for other Flash-based applications). I didn't know Flash was involved in YouTube videos.

No, but I was mightily annoyed that I couldn't get the sound on a Ben Folds video.
Have you tried everything on here (http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?answer=58132&topic=10561)? (Though it isn't very helpful)
Sound options, volumes, stuff like that? Is the YouTube volume down/muted?
When I had a problem with YouTube it was my virus software not allowing the content, it only affected YouTube.

Clicking on 'help' would've been a good start, I agree. I shall have a look at those this evening, though I know the points in the first section are fine.
The virus software might need investigating; I updated Norton last night...

The only Norton update should be a full un-install.

The update was only getting the latest virus definitions, which I do every week. And it's not like I've had a problem with Norton before (:hihi:) .
Thanks anyway. I'll try uninstalling and reinstalling Flash first (if the second set of sound settings in that list check out). I'm not sure how I can go back to a pre-latest virus definitions if Norton does turn out to be the problem.
remove norton full stop, its a virus in its own right ;)
Thinking about it, I've realised that the YouTube issue appeared before the Norton update. Anyway, I'll report back when I've tried the suggestions. Thanks again.
Reinstalling Flash resolved the issue. Thanks for all the responses and advice :) .

It was Flash? You should have not questioned my first post. :suspect:

I didn't question it. I just pointed out that other Flash-based applications were working fine, and that I wasn't sure how, as that was the case, some Flash malfunction could affect YouTube selectively. But apparently it did. Or its resolution could've been serendipitous.
