View Full Version : Allowing a cat time off from a collar?

Smudge's collar has rubbed off all her fur around her neck and I was hoping to give her some time off from it but she's not microchipped and is used to having full access to a cat flap...

I don't want to keep her in for any period of time, but I don't want to lose her either. We live in an area with loads of cats, mostly collarless but I still don't know whether to risk it.

Smudge is 10, has never gone missing and goes out less than she used to now.

What do you think? Do you think it irritates her neck enough to risk leaving the collar off or do you think I'd be better off leaving it on her as it has her tag on and the hairloss doesn't bother her as much as it looks like it would?

id leave her be for a few days when i lived at home we had one that always lost her hair where the collar was so in the end we took it off and never had any issues with her ''disappearing'' or you could get her chipped...?

I do intend to get her chipped but at the moment I have ridiculous amounts of money to spend out on Takara's tests at the vet, plus Eddy's going on supplements and painkillers and I'm still saving up for a car I've got to pay for before the end of April so chipping the cats is, unfortunately not a priority!

Yes cats don't like collars so perhaps it is better not to make them wear them but then again they are useful if a cat gets lost. Not an easy dilema for a cat lover.

this cat is used to a collar though :?

it'll take weeks for the fur to grow back, and then you'd have to leave the collar off for it not to wear off again

somebody will think you've abandoned your cat and start feeding her :suspect:

aren't the RSPCA still doing those free micro-chipping days?

I've seen a few come and go Lisa, but I've been at work each time!

I've put it back on her as it's not obviously bothering her, just looks uncomfortable to me!

I think it depends on the type of collar too as she's had some that didn't wear away at the fur and some that do so I will revert back to the (more expensive) ones that didn't rub hair away!
