My son had the same strain of meningitis as your daughter when he was just under two years old. He had it for 3 days before it was diagnosed. On the sunday, he had a very high temp, and was hallucinating, called emergency doctor, who said he had sunstroke, give him calpol and take him to your own doctor tomorrow (monday). Took him to doctor, he then had the rash. Doctor said it was chicken pox, and prescribed calomile lotion!. He fell to sleep monday and when we tried to wake him on tuesday he was in a coma. It was only when he was admitted to hospital, and had a lumbar puncture, they realised he had meningitis. It was almost unheard of though 13 years ago and hard to detect. Thankfully now there is more info and like you said trust your instinct, and call a doctor straight away. I wouldn't have any hesitation now.
He is now nearly 15 years old, and luckily, it hasn't left him with any major probs.
I hope your daughter makes a full recovery, and wish you all well. It really is every parents nightmare.

It is the most frightening thing in the world to be told your child has meningitis, there's just nothing you can do, my son never even got the rash, he was just so ill I thought he dying, he caught mumps from his brother, but unlike his brother his went internally, one thing I remember the doctor saying, was that they should be able to touch their chest with their chin, and my son couldn't so it was a good indication to what was wrong. I truly hope all is now well.

Ilaria, you will have been vaccinated against the bacterial form but keep alert as there is no vaccination for viral meningitis.

If you're a parent and your child is ill - follow Brad's advice, and trust your gut instinct. Get medical advice. Kid's ailments are notorious to diagnose, so don't think that what the doctor says may be wrong with your child is always correct. Brad did the right thing and took his child to hospital.

Hope all is well with your daughter now.

Glad to hear everything was OK Brad, you did the right thing.

About 6 months ago my daughter felt ill and had a rash which didn't go away when pressed with a glass. Took her to hospital and the two of us ended up staying in overnight for observation. It turned out the rash was eczma, but I'm glad we took the safe route (and sleeping the night on a camp bed next to my daughter in a full ward was actually quite a fun "bonding experience").

We are so lucky to have our Children's Hospital here on our doorstep. I think we've got a Loyalty Card with them now.

I've sometimes felt a little guilty or not sure if I was worrying too much, but they have always said that we did the correct thing taking a child straight to them, if only just to be sure.

I think that, as a teaching hospital, they sometimes welcome a throughput of not-so-sick 'uns for hands-on training.

... and they don't bat an eyelid when a 12 month old needs a full breakfast after I've slept there!

   to them all!

It's worth remembering that Meningitis isn't just something that gets kids.

An Aunt of mine died of bacterial meningitis in the mid 1980s - the hospital thought it was flu until it was too late.

Good to see people being aware of these things - good luck and good health to all involved!

I am so glad your daughter is well again and has survived that awful ordeal.

When my daughter was about 2 1/2 I developed viral meningitis. At first I thought it was a migraine and just tried to sleep it off. But after 12 hours of vomiting and a temp of 104, aversion to light and a rash on my chest, my mate called the doctor who rushed me to hospital. I had a lumbar puncture and was on drips etc. I was really ill and lost 2 stones in a week (wish I could do that now!!). I was in hospital for a week then I discharged myself, was at home for 2 weeks then back in for another week. I was tired and ill for about another 18 months before I finally started to feel better.

I have never been so scared in my life and was convinced I was going to die. Since then I am really cautious with my kids and if in doubt, get them to the hospital.

I'm so pleased your daughter made a recovery. I just can't imagine how awful it is for the parents who have lost their children to this horrible illness.

I have had viral meningitus and it's not something I would wish on anyone. I just hope one day meningitus gets erradicated completley.

What are common meningitis symptoms?

high temerature, vomiting, stiff neck, lethargy, discomfort of bright lights, a purple rash, headaches and sometimes fits are all signs of meningitis, but that dosn`t mean you would show all the signs.

I was going to put up a link to highlight the symptoms, but you beat me to it :)

Meningitis is something that is really close to me, having lost my cousin to the disease when she was 16. I have witnessed first hand what this disease can do to a healthy child and how easily the symptoms can be overlooked.

I would encourage everyone to look at the symptom lists online and familiarise themselves with the symptoms. It is important that the symptoms are noticed in the very early stages as Meningitis can make a child very ill/or kill very quickly.
