View Full Version : What is female circumcision (sp) kirky 16-03-2005, 12:30 i'm just watching micheal palin in the sahara,he's in a village where he's just been told all the girls have been circumcised.....what exactly do they chop off:o :o :o :o and why? evildrneil 16-03-2005, 12:34 Usually it is the removal the clitoris (or visable part of it) sometime along with surrounding tissues. The most common reported reason for this that I have seen is that the clitoris as a 'vestigal male organ' and removing it ushers in womanhood... Further information can be found at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Female_circumcision Dj_Shadowman 16-03-2005, 12:37 Just PM'ed you about this - wont post on an open forum as its a bit of an iffy subject.... Rubysoho 16-03-2005, 12:39 Yet more 'reasons' can be found here (http://www.religioustolerance.org/fem_circ.htm). Dj_Shadowman 16-03-2005, 12:52 Not that it shouldnt be discussed but im not going to turn this into a thread that is slating other peoples relegion. And seeing as I am not from a background that advocates this "procedure" I do not feel qualified to speak about it on a open forum. However, if any would like my personal opinion on this subject....feel free to ask. evildrneil 16-03-2005, 12:58 It's actually more a clutural than a religious practice and certainly would appear to be more animistic in origin than the product of an organised monotheistic religion? Cultural it may be, but It's still a foul barbaric practice (in my opinion) and I don't care who I upset  Lucy_Smith 16-03-2005, 13:07 I've read some reports of it being forced upon women, so that they cannot enjoy sex. I find that quite barbaric. Although there may be members of certain tribes who may chose to have it done, I can't for the life of me think why, but I've read of some tribes who appear to have the most bizarre social practices but to them it's perfectly normal. viking 16-03-2005, 13:27 Originally posted by evildrneil Usually it is the removal the clitoris (or visable part of it) sometime along with surrounding tissues. I don't understand though why you would choose to hide that disapproval, you are entitled to an opinion, whether you are from a background that advocated it or not. (PS - if you were from a background which advocated it, then it's unlikely you would critisice it, thus not leaving any topic with very much to debate if that criteria were applied). jackthedog 16-03-2005, 13:48 Originally posted by Cyclone so, from that I can presume that you don't approve of the practice. He was probably predicting a load of abuse along the lines of stop being racist you stupid racist facist   etc etc blah blah that seems to be so prevelant these days. kirky 16-03-2005, 14:06 Originally posted by viking They collect them all up and make them into boots. If they're Y shaped, do you put both feet into one? Dj_Shadowman 16-03-2005, 14:13 Jackthedog is correct - thats exactly the kind of response I was expecting. However, if anyone wants to call me racist I suggest they meet my 15 year old daughter first - she is half indian, and may have something to say to the people who think that I am a racist. I dont care if you are black, white, chinese, indian or pakistani - its the person inside that counts. evildrneil 16-03-2005, 14:17 [mod note] Closing now as the question has been answered and we are starting to drift. |
