View Full Version : Midwife and surgery in S6
chickywiggle 30-03-2008, 09:43 Hi,
Am 12 weeks pregnant and just moved to Hillsborough, S6. My old Dr's is in the process of taking me off their books so I have to find a new surgery. The NHS have suggested Far Lane or Crookes. Has anyone got any views on these? Have found a website for Far Lane and am cooncerned they do not appear to have a midwife attached and following the birth "baby clinc" is only for 1 hour 1 day a week - surely they can't fit all their pregnant residents in who may need this?? I have also been advised by many people not to register with Tramways.
Would like a really good midwife as had an 'experience' on the phone with Jessops last nite which has really put me off wanting to go there for/ with anything!!!!
Please help.
gina2007 30-03-2008, 15:25 Hi, during my pregnancy i was with tramways/fairlawns (Both surgerys are same, just different locations) and i must say, excellent service with me. My midwife (Di Mitchell) was ace, always sorted me out with concerns ect without having to ring triage every time. Emergency appt's, i went in around 4pm (Antenatal finishes around then) and said i need to see my midwife, I got lead straight in and seen too, jumped another 3 ladies there. It was really excellent service, and theres a range of midwifes attached to there. :)
babychickens 30-03-2008, 18:36 One of the GPs in Crookes (I believe they may be in the phone book as 'Crooks practice' ho ho ho) do one-to-one midwife care, which is absolutely excellent - ring them and ask before registering there. Be warned, GP receptionists can be really snotty and try to stop you registering unless you're in their 'area', but i believe you're entitled to get your antenatal care wherever you like (so if you wanted to stay with your old GP I think you can do so).
funfamily 30-03-2008, 19:15 I wouldn't recommend tramways unless they have got a permanent midwife now.. I've had 2 LO's and seen a variety of midwives some good, some bad, and not always available. Also found the team very unsupportive of home birth.
I'm at tramways and found the midwifery care excellent, very supportive with my home birth and were brilliant when i had to be transferred to hospital ,coming to visit me there when i had to stay a few days. It wasn't one to one but it was the next best thing. Alot of my ante natal at the end was done at my house so as i didn't have to drag my very large bump to the gps. The GPs on the other hand are a bit hit and miss but not too awful.
heartshaped1 30-03-2008, 20:24 I'm with Far Lane and had my midwife care from there two years ago - a named midwife who was lovely - I saw her at nearly (!) every appointment, and you can always go to the baby clinic at Fairlawns or First Point which gives you a choice of 4 hours per week to contact your health visitor postnatally.
I can't honestly say I had any complaints about my experience with Far Lane antenatally. Now if I could just get an appointment when my 2 year old is ill..... :)
I was/am with tramways/fairlawns and would recommend them. My midwife was supportive of a homebirth - which I decided against. Admittedly I saw different midwives throughout my pregnancy but all were good. Care post birth was good too. There is always parking at fairlawns which is good.
Since then I love their triage system of ringing in the morning to speak to a doctor - I have been able to avoid going in for emergency appointments and have been able to get a prescription after speaking to a doctor and then picked it up when it suited me.

I moved into S6 from S2 in the last month of my pg and I went to Tramways.
The m/w was ok but didn't need her much what I would say about Tramways is the hv c**p. I was stuck in the middle of an argument between hv and mw re who was responsible for looking after me (sorry just had a baby don't care as long as someone tells me I am b/f right).
I think most places are the same and it comes down to if you gell with that person or not.
As I say I wasn't impressed but all my friends thought it was ok.
I am at Tramways/ Fairlawns & have always been happy. I think the MW I had was on long term sick. If thats still the case it might cause problems with continuity of care.
I think like a pp said it is more if you gell with the person. I loved my mw but I know my sisters friend didn't like her at all.
shells2909 04-04-2008, 21:30 While pg i was with tramways. My midwife should have been a lady called barbara but she was apparently on long term sick so throughout my pg i saw Di. She's lovely and i found her very easy to get along with etc.

Barbara was my sisters MW, in nice words, from her point of view, id have prefered Di... Which is who I had. So lovely, did you get Alison at all? For some reason during the end of my pg Alison and Di shared my care
Birth-Peace 04-04-2008, 22:41 I can never get an appointment with the mw at Tramways, she only does two days every other week.
Ridiculous :loopy:

You don't !
cosywolf 05-05-2008, 08:55 Do the midwives from your surgery not work out of a local children's centre or similar? Mine only works two or three days a week, different days as well, but she had given me a landline number separate from her mobile and the surgery, and when I called it in a bit of a panic, I discovered that there was an entire group of them, all based at a local children's centre, and there were drop-ins and the opportunityto see any available midwife - I hadn't got a clue, and would have spent my entire pregnancy struggling to see the one midwife if I hadn't found out - look into it.
