View Full Version : Change colour of threads that have been read/ignored previously

When I check the different sections I continuously find highlighted threads that I have either read or decided to ignore previously, I have noticed that this is sometimes not the case but it does happen more often than not...

I believe that if a new post has been posted on a thread it makes the thread bold again, and I then have to trail through several threads again that I have already decided in the past, don't interest me. Would just save a lot of time...

Thanks

I need some help understanding this. As you say, the forum already marks new (unread) topics in bold for you to easily see what you've read or not. It's no 100% full proof as it uses a cookie stored in your browser. Are you saying that you would prefer the threads to change colour rather than just be bold or not?

I have to admit I'm a little confused over the whole bold/not bold thing

when I first started on the forum I assumed that when I look at the forum bold thread titles indicate either new threads that I haven't read or threads that have had a post since I last read them with not bold indicating ones that I had read

but I found that if I didn't read anything and left the forum then when I returned a few hours later half the previously bold threads were now not bold

so I guess it doesn't mean that at all so now I've got no idea what it is supposed to indicate and I tend to ignore the effect

I always thought this effect was managed by the browser history remembering the links that have been traversed and then by using the css pseudo class "a:visited" the appearance of the effect could be altered to fit the style of the board but this doesn't seem to be the case on SF

Geoff you mention a cookie being used to do this ? sounds like a lot of work to mimic something the browser should be doing anyway, could you explain a bit more please as I'm thinking I've got the wrong end of the stick here

I've found this as well that even when I havent been around for several days or weeks at a time, that on my return those threads which I could not have possibly seen are no longer highlighted and appear to be treated as though I've read them when I havent.

Yeah, what they said basically...but also in the reverse order.

There are threads that I have read that then change from bold to not bold which is cool, but then someone posts a new post and the thread then changes back to bold? If I wanted to track said thread then I'd subscribe to it, but seeing as it goes back to the top "Bumps" then it needn't go bold, seems a lot of effort has gone into advertising new posts for some reason.

I personally pay a lot of time in the jobs section as I part run a van & man company and need to be quick to pick up new ad's that require our services and when the old posts are bold and the new ones aren't, I sometimes miss them and therefore lose work.

The forum software *should* make threads you've not read in bold and those you have read not in bold. Unfortunately the cookie system can be a little hit and miss and there isn't a one solution suits all approach as there are so many different browsers, security apps, etc. Clicking View New Posts is a good work around if you want to see new threads and the bold/not bold isn't working.
