there is a nice restaurant at the Quays and a few shops to browse around.

For an example of a good development involving use of canals in an urban setting, I would advise taking a trip to Gas Street basin in Birmingham. I think the problem with doing the same for Victoria Quays is that its a bit out of the way and not all that easy to get to, whereas the Gas Street basin is a short walk away from a big International Convention centre, a major theatre and other attractions. Liverpool have done a similar thing with the docks area. VQ at the moment is probably not worth going to for its own sake.

Went down the canal basin on sunday for the 1st time,i was really impressed, found it very interesting too, could do with a few more "attractions" in keeping with the general theme though, just to generate extra visitors, without spoiling it too much.
ps saw the junkie in the phone box waiting for her dealer,as mentioned in an earlier thread by Kirky:(

The Bluwater restaurant / bar is very good and very friendly.

The shop that sells kitchen utensils (Zone?) has some really unusual stuff in and it's very cheap.

Apparently Sheffield Council dont encourage any open markets etc. because of Health and Safety, they could get sued if someone fell in the canal.

It's just another example of how Sheffield tries half-heartedly and fails. Every other city has exploited their water feature to the fullest extent with great success.

The biggest problem is that it's fenced off by the ring road and it bordered by the awful Castlegate markets area.

Don't bother with a boat! My partner and I took a walk along the canal last month from Victoria Quays. Came off at a bridge and walked back into the city centre along the 5 weirs walk. We aim to go all the way along the canal to Rotherham. Incidentally, anyone know the exact location where the canal scene in the Full Monty was filmed?

PS We saw a kingfisher on the 5 weirs walk.

The a39 is a nice trip boat but the one at Sprotbrough is nicer.

I went the a39 at xmas with my daughter for a Santa cruise and presume would be better in summer when lighter.

Dont forget to visit Stumpy's!!!!!!
