View Full Version : Wadsley Manor House
Geddy Lee 28-03-2008, 10:41 Anybody got any information about the old Wadsley Manor House on Laird Road. I have a picture from the 1920s, I was wondering when it was demolished or if part of it is still standing. There is an old house at the bottom of Laird Road called Wadsley Lodge, is this connected to the original manor in any way ?
Best Regards
The large house was demolished in the early 80s and new housing was put up. It's a cul-de-sac called Wade Meadow. Wadsley Lodge is still there though.

joanne5600 28-03-2008, 15:19 isnt it also connected to the drive on marlcliffe road - apparently tunnels run from the house to the drive under the gardens
Is it?! That's a log way! :o
joanne5600 28-03-2008, 17:17 not that long really just down laird and under wadsley lane
Geddy Lee 28-03-2008, 22:03 Thanks for the replies very helpful. I've heard this rumour about the tunnel, I read in a local book that the manor was connected to Wadsley House, now a social club on the The Drive off Marlcliffe Road.
Dogsbody 18-07-2008, 16:46 I was very interested in your item on Wadsley manor, you see we were the last family to live there. It was demolished around 1958 while I was away doing my national service in the R.A. If you have a picture of the old house taken in the 50s, I would greatly appreciate a copy, paid for in full I may add.
I used to visit the place years ago to see one of the Wintersgill family who were stewards opf a club there.
Have I got the wrong place?
Dogsbody 19-07-2008, 14:39 Yes PopT you do have the wrong place: The Wintersgills were stewards at Wadsley house social club on The Drive, off Marlcliffe Road. Brian currently lives in Barnsley.
Wadsley manor was at the bottomm of Laird Road; where the block of flats now stand.
Thanks for putting me right, Dogsbody
I wonder if Brian is still 'chipping' away in Barnsley?
Dogsbody 20-07-2008, 15:50 I have Brian's e-mail address if I'm allowed to send it over the internet.
Here goes nothing. :- joy.pell@homecall.co.uk

hillsbro 17-08-2009, 08:36 Here is a scan taken from an old magazine (?) cutting that's been in my "Wadsley" folder for many years. It shows the old Manor House (http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u219/twigmore/WadsleyManor.jpg) on Laird Road - I don't know the date but possibly the 1940s/50s.

1950 - Wadsley Hall, Far Lane. Rebuilt 1722 by George Bamforth, then Lord of the Manor. At the time of this photograph the owner was Mrs. Winifred Trickett.
Is your pic perhaps of Wadsley House ? I can't find a photo of that property on Picture Sheffield.
Geddy Lee 17-08-2009, 10:07 Hi all
That picture posted by Hillsboro is of the Old Wadsley Manor House, I've got it in a book called "A History Of The Manor And Parish Of Wadsley" by Reverend H. Kirk-Smith who was vicar of Wadsley Church in the mid 1950s.
Greybeard's pics look similar to me, just a different angle.
Heres what Wadsley House looks like:

Hi Greybeard - the photos you posted links to are certainly of Wadsley Hall, located near the bottom of Far Lane, opposite Lennox Road. Here is another photo dating from c. 1910: http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u219/twigmore/WadsleyHall.jpg. The photo I posted is actually of Wadsley Manor House, as Geddy Lee has confirmed. There is much confusion over Wadsley Hall, Wadsley House (now the club on "The Drive" off Marlcliffe Road), Wadsley Grove (off Far Lane) and Wadsley Manor House. The confusion is compounded by the fact that the Lord of the Manor lived at Wadsley Hall (!) This is why I gave the location of the building as Laird Road.
I have my father with me at present and he used to live at Wadsley Lodge when it was a private school called Hillsborough High School. This was around 1938/1939. His Mum and Dad were caretaker's there,A family called Colley lived at Wadsley Manor House at the same time , as kids they often used to be in and out of the Manor House .Anyone got a copy of a small book called Wadsley Jack for sale ?.

I can confirm that your picture is the correct one for Wadsley Manor as I lived there from 1940 until it's demolition around 1958. My mother Mrs Jowle and our neighbour Mrs Brownell were rehoused by the council. I was doing my national service at the time.
My mum use to live their to she was part of the Jowle family. I have an old picture of the house and a variety of pictures from our family collection.
Particular mention to the sloping floors in the house was one of my mum's memories that she would always recount.

dialectmad 12-08-2011, 22:29 The old Wadsley Manor House stood at the bottom of Laird Road on the left going down. The block of flats stands on the site. It was demolished before the rest of the village was demolished in 1969.
I think that the old manor was demolished about 1960. It had become a slum and was divided into more than one dwelling.
The building of Wadsley Hall in Far Lane menat that the Manor House was tehn located at that house and manorial rents etc were paid here and the large barn at the back held the crops belonging to the manor.
The opposite side of Laird Road which is occupied now by Wadsley Park Crescent was not the site of the manor.
