View Full Version : Gene Wilder: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory - possibly Gene Wilders greatest film? He was certainly a better Wonka than Jonny Depp.
Mind you, I found the Umpa Lumpas a bit scary as a small child.
ChrisTodd 30-03-2008, 09:45 I really like the 1970's movie.
It is much better than the recent movie.
Willy Wonka is one of those films I can watch again and again.
The children, and especially Willy Wonka, all seemed more believable in the 1970's film.
I watched the new one last night and it wasn't a patch on the old one.
What about those umpah lumpahs....they looked liked mini robots.
Give me Gene Wilders version anytime.
I think Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is quite possibly the worst remake of all time.

hmmmm comes close with young frankenstein and blazing saddles
ShinyPurple 30-03-2008, 14:40 I prefer the new version because it is much closer to the book.
I read the book when I was about 8 and loved it. The Gene Wilder version of the film was disappointing & just too sickly sweet because they'd cut all of the trademark Roald Dahl darkness out of it. Apparantly Roald hated it too - he'd wanted Spike Milligan to play Willie Wonka...now that would have been a good film :D

The Producers?
melthebell 30-03-2008, 17:48 The Producers?
nahhhh
edit....not enough characters oops
I love both versions. I love the songs in the old film, thought Gene Wilder was great (I actually thought his name was Willy Wonka when I was a kid!), and can watch it over and over again even as an adult.
The new film is great in its own right. Much better visually, as you'd expect, love Jonny D's quirky expressions and child-like portrayal of Willy, and the fact that it is much closer to the book than the first ( as someone already said ). Hate the Oompah Loompahs though and their songs are totally pants - you can't even hum them 2 minutes after they sing them, what was Mr Elfman thinking??
xxsarahxx 30-03-2008, 21:29 i quite like both versions, but i do think the older one is the best.
Although i do love Jonny Depp i think that Gene Wilder is better at playing willy wonka...simply because jonny depp scares me a bit as willy....:hihi:

His greatest film has to be... Hear no evil, Speak No Evil wipes the floor with Willy!! ;)
Or Stir Crazy!!! Now that's funny
Jabberwocky 02-04-2008, 10:48 Watched the Johhny Depp version the other night.
Remember the Terry Pratchetts Hogfather from the other year? Depp sounded like Mr Teatime when he spoke.

Yeah he was definately creepy, it was enough to put the kids off sweets for life!
Buttercup80 04-04-2008, 14:32 Gene Wilder's best film has got to be Stir Crazy, it's on my top 5 list of best films ever!
We got to watch Young Frankenstein at school in English class. How cool was that!
sufc_tom 04-04-2008, 16:18 Stir Crazy is one of the funniest films ever.
The bit where he he is hanging off that torture rack is brilliant.
o0berry0o 04-04-2008, 16:41 I found it amusing when in the new version the oompah loompahs put on those yellow caps to swim in the chocolate...the term "little swimmers" brought on a whole new meaning
