We've had our pup now for a little over 6 weeks and despite our best efforts, she refuses to be house trained.

When we first got her, we use dthe scented mats, which worked perfectly for drawing her to do her business in one area. We moved them gradually towards the door, and have since gotten rid of them completely, as we dont want to encourage her to do her business anywhere in the house.

We treat her and lavish her with praise whenever she does do anything outdoors, exercise her regularily (at least twice a day) and let her on to the back garden every 30minutes to an hour in the evening. We dont punish her when she has accidents, we just take her to it and tell her in a firm voice 'NO'.

On Tuesday/Wednesday I thought we had finally cracked it - she didnt do anything in the house and actually came and showed me when she wanted to go out. Neadless to say, I was pleased :)

Since then though, apart from weeing, she hasnt done anything outside, and she managed to leave me two presents this morning in the kitchen.

Both me and my G/F are both frustrated and confused - it seems to be one step forward and three steps back all the time with her. So if anyone has any advice, I'm all ears:D

*PS the puppy is about 18weeks old.

My pup took ages to house train, and one day it just seemed to click.
Advice included crate training, which basically follows the principal that they don't mess in their own bed.
And taking her out every time she wakes and after food, but our problem was overnight or when we went out.

What finally worked for us was lifting up her food and water at 7pm every night, and staying outside with her until she performed. It took around a week, but it really worked for us.

Our pup is now almost 8 months old, and has been house trained for the last two.

We were lucky with our dog he trained really easy it's just the luck of the draw,like Hayley above said just keep at it and it will all fall into place and when it does that's it sorted for good.I know it's frustrating but you will get there with her.

Sorry to hear that your still having so much trouble, Kira is not doing to badly, but never asks to go out and still has odd accidents if I don't watch her, and if she gets upstairs you can guarantee at least a wee on the carpet :rolleyes:
Personally I wouldn't show her what shes done and say no (though I know its frustrating) I would simply quietly clean it up then carry on taking her out.
I think its all to do with catching them at the right time, I do tend to let Kira out about every hour...though I don't time it, if shes asleep I leave her but she will want to go pretty soon after waking, and soon after eating, then perhaps every hour-hour and half while playing and active.
Keep going the penny will drop I'm sure, I still wouldn't class Kira as house trained no way... so your not doing as badly as you think, I think accidents till maybe 6 months is quite usual, I'm glad I'm poor with nothing to spoil :hihi:

We have tried to second guess her bowel movements - we started getting up earlier to let her out as she always seemed to do her stuff at the same time - and we watch her like a hawk every other time.

The really frustrating part was this morning for example, I knew she needed to do something, she knew she needed to do something, but despite taking her onto the garden two or three times, she still waited 'till she was in the house to do it:huh:

I may well give the ignoring thing a go though - I've nothing to lose :D

She's not so bad with chewing to be fair. Anything she finds lying about ends up straight in the mouth - tissues, socks, credit cards:o - but so far, she hasnt chewed anything more substantial (thank God!).

On the plus side, I have tought her to sit, which I'm quite proud about :hihi:

Crate training worked for me, also sometimes the smell may be in your house (even if you have cleaned it and cant smell it yourself) I got a product from PetRus called Simple solution, this removes the smell to us and dogs. If your little dog is female, I have always found females to tend to want to do it on the same spot. So walkies may not create the urge in her in the same way as a spot in your garden may do.
They all vary tho, I had a little male gsd years ago who was house trained in a couple of days, and a bitch who if you so much as missed the look in her eye,puddled on the floor. But try the simple solution, it worked with Josh.

Kira is not to bad in general, however her night time antics still get me down, she got a bit better for a week or so and I thought it was over, but this week we have had both barking and howling for about 15 mins every single night.
I know it doesn't sound like much but I've had a couple of months of it and it gets me down, we then get barking in the morning when Kira wants to get up and Meg snuffling under the door.
Kira really seems to hate the crate and she hates being left at all and just barks, no matter what I do, I am considering giving up and trying both dogs in the kitchen tonight, they won't like it as they are used to the run of downstairs but I need some peace from them.
I am really mardy and tired today I dare say I will get over it....eventually :D

I swear by Simple Solution (and Urine Off) for the cats if we have the occasional mishap. That and the steam cleaner.

Ailsa our dobermutt has been caught short a few times over the years (she hates the rain and if she is absolutely busting to go but refuses to be dragged out into the yard...I don't let her get away with it and will stand outside with a the golf brolley over her til she does it, but other half does not always have my stamina)

Hi - you sound like you are nearly there - but it can be frustrating. Have you tried the pee posts - it worked with my sister's dog -it is a little plastic device - cost about £5 - and is impregnated with some kind of scent and you just push it into your garden where you want her to do her business and they are attracted to it. Also keep to regular times for feeding and letting out onto the garden. If you take note what time she is fed then you will eventually be able to gauge it so that you know when she will be ready for business. Otherwise I found that if you let them out regularly every half hour they just see it as a bit of a game and wander round just sniffing and not actually doing anything. Good luck with you little hun.
