Does anyone have any experiance of two Westie puppies?
I have a girl Westie at the moment that's about 9 months old.
We want to get another Westie puppy in July as a wedding anniversery pressie to ourselves. By then Kizzy will be just over 1 year old, as she was born on June 28th.
Is that a good age to get another puppy? When we got her we said to the breeder we wanted another one, and she advised us to wait until around April time, and to get a boy.
Will Kizzy be less likely to fight with a boy than a girl? (Not that she's a bully or anything, haha!)
Also does anyone know the best place to buy a puppy from?
When we got Kizzy we wasn't really left with much choice as all the ads in the paper had sold out, despite getting the paper the day it came out!
Not that we'd need much choice really!
Will Kizzy even be a puppy still when she's a year old?
So yeahhh anyway (shut up Mandie, stop rambling on for ten years!) any help would be awesome. :)
I have quite a few westie books and stuff, but it'd be nice to hear peoples opinions as well as getting info from books and stuff. :)
Thanks in advance.
And sorry for the rambling. I have no excuse.
my standard answer would always be never to purchase a dog from a newspaper ad (or internet ad either) as a responsible breeder will always have a waiting list for pups before mating, so they're not stuck with pups they're trying to sell off without being choosy about who takes the pups or whether those pups will be discarded when the novelty wears off
The best way to find a pup is to attend a dog show where you can meet a number of breeders all at the same time and compare their dogs easily! You'll also hear on the grapevine of who you shouldn't line the pockets of :suspect:
Kizzy will probably still be puppyish when she's a year old, although smaller dogs do seem to mature earlier than the larger breeds. There are generalisations about whether to have a dog/dog dog/bitch bitch/bitch combination if you're having two, but if you have one dog older than the other the younger will usually just fall into place as lower in the pack due to their size when you introduce them - unless you're planning to rescue a dog of similar age!
If you're considering a rescue dog (and there are sometimes pups available due to silly people not realising that dogs need some sort of training and company) then PM LindseyW as she has contacts at Westie Rescue
Eeek didn't know that about the newspaper ad! The advert did actually say that they were not moulting Westies, and something else that turned out not to be true! (I miss being able to wear dark clothing! :()
Is there any other way apart from going to a dog show?
We thought about rescuing a dog before, but I really really want another puppy! Although Kizzy really annoyed me when she was a puppy, now I know it was just because I wasn't used to it, as she was my first puppy. So now I've gone through it once, I'm actually excited to go through everything all again!
And I think Kizzy will get on better with a dog smaller and younger than her, as when we walk her she seems to bark at big dogs then hide behind me, whereas smaller/younger dogs she tries to play with them!
It would be nice to rescue one though, but I guess not many westie puppies get 'unwanted' and if they do, they get homed quickly?
(Oh and I tried to PM the LindseyW person but I think I got the wrong person, so I'm glad their inbox was full or I would have sounded a bit silly!)
Ohhh it was 'lyndsayx' I tried to email. Haha, well I wasn't far off!
buying dogs is like looking for tradesmen - if they're advertising in the paper ask 'why', and the best way to find a breeder is by personal recommendation
you can try the method we used to find our beagle - but not everybody is prepared to pull the car over and pounce on an unsuspecting dog walker to interrogate them over where they got their dog from (and I was selective in who I was pouncing on - they had to be a good example of the breed in my judgement ;) )
Having been given a couple of breeder's names by this method I attended a dog show, and was happy to find that the two breeder's dogs I liked the look of there were the same breeders I'd been given details for already!
You may be able to attend some local ringcraft classes to find local breeders, but there is no guarantee you'll find an ethical breeder by that method either - you really need to talk to a few different breeders and be prepared to put your name down for their next litter when you've made an informed choice of who to hand money over to
Pups do sometimes come up for rescue, but the breed rescue is the best place to find more info on how often this happens and at what age you could expect to be able to find a pup

Westie Puppies.........ahhh CUTE !
We got our second when the eldest was 18mths old. IMO it is the perfect age, ours got on like a house on fire & still do.
Girls together are OK, as are boys, but I wouldn't mix unless they are littermates & neutered / spayed.
Contact your breeder or if you want to look at a rescue then PM me & I can help you look at that.
However they need a lot of training, you will find your elder one comes on in leaps & bounds or totally regresses !!! Get them both to the same class at the same time, and get your little one to Puppy Classes - Most vet's run these nowadays.
