View Full Version : Smash and grab at petrol station
Yesterday my friend filled up with petrol at townend filling station, she was just about to start the car when this hooded thing smashed the passanger side window and grabed her handbag, got in a red car and drove off, this happened at 7 in the morning. The police attended, by the time she got home within 1/2 hour to cancel her bank cards, the thief had tried to withdraw 400 pounds from her bank account.

yeah right theivin ******** the low life off the manor arnt they.....not like the good law abiding hard working people from gleadless:rolleyes:
It's quite difficult to keep a bag out of sight if they've already seen you walking to the kiosk with it. It's not very practical to lock it in the boot, and most gloveboxes are way too small to keep a glove in, let alone a bag.
Also, is it just me who forgets to lock the car door at the petrol station... terrible habit.

Dj_Shadowman 15-03-2005, 10:04 You get scumbags wherever you live.
I moved from Wybourn to Woodhouse, a quiet area with lots of older couples - now all we get are little sh**s on those mini moto bikes tearing up and down the street at all hours.
And the number of things that have been nicked off my garden - I've lost count.
My bag goes in the footwell behind the driver's seat - for this very reason. It's not were you'd expect to find it, and it's more awkward to get at.
Oh, and I always lock the car. I never get out and leave the keys in either, even if I'm only opening a gate

moongarden 15-03-2005, 11:50 Sorry to hear about your friends problem Pencil.
There are some things you can do to minimise the risk of it happening again though.
if you have a shoulder bag with a long strap i suggest you wrap the strap twice round the seatbelt clip of the passenger seat (presuming the passenger seat is not in use) and then put the bag in the footwell with your coat or whatever on top. wrapping it twice round whatever will make it tighten if someone tries to pull it.
also a point to consider when buying handbags - buy something with a robust looking strap which is long enough to wear diagonally accross the body.
i recently went through my purse and cleared it out of anything with my address on. i've even taken my card part of my drivers licence out incase it gets stolen.
be prepared - the phone numbers to call if anything happens etc are now on a sheet of paper in the glovebox, at work in my desk and at home (photocopied at work ;-) )
something else you can do to be prepared is get your phone numbers from your mobile backed up - ask in the shop where you got it or ask in the shop tied to your network as it is either free or less than 5 quid and will save you having to find and type in all the numbers in again.
the final thing it is worth checking in advance is whether the side window is covered on your car insurance and how much the excess is - worth checking the small print on the next policy at renewal time.
sorry for the long message but i hope that stops someone else from being a victim of theft.

Had to read this 3 times :hihi: (Sorry)
Internetowl 15-03-2005, 16:11 Gleadless, Manor all the same low life scum!
But how many times do you need to be told to not leave your belongings in the car unattended - locking the door wouldn't have helped as they smashed the window - but hopefully the police will be able to use the cctv from the filing station to help identify the culprit.

at lot more practical than replacing the window and canceling credit cards etc
