Is it tied to a network? Aren't you supposed to phone them?

Mobiles are a bit wierd like that. Mine went faulty, but Orange couriered me a replacement so the exchange was done on my doorstep. I'm on contract though

Steevie I had the same problem with my pay as you go phone I returned it to the shop where i purchased it from, and they simply but my details in the computer and they exchanged it no problem.

Hope you go on ok.

taken from "The sale of Goods Act 1979(Amended)
If you are claiming the remedies of repair or replacement within the first six months after purchase, it is for THE TRADER to prove that the goods conformed to the contract at the time of sale.

edit- this possibly is no help at all.

You don't need a receipt to return something you just need to be able to show that you bought it from wherever. With a phone it should be easy as they all have a unique IMEI number and you'd presume they are all logged or something.

"Q7. Do I have to produce a receipt to claim my rights?

No. In fact the trader doesn't have to give you a receipt in the first place so it would be unfair to say that you had to produce one. However, it might not be unreasonable for the shop to want some proof of purchase, so look to see if you have a cheque stub, bank statement, credit card slip etc., and this should be sufficient."
