View Full Version : Looking for a decent area to move to
Am moving to work at Sheffield hospital in August - was wanting advice on decent areas of the city to live.
Currently living in Headingley in Leeds - would like somewhere with a similar feel (or like Chapel Allerton in Leeds if you know it) - young, decent bars, pubs, restaurants near by - but unlike Headingley perhaps not too studenty.
Any ideas??
Was going to suggest Ecclesall Road but that's very studenty. I think most places that are "young" and have lots of bars are naturally also 'studenty'.
Guess I meant I have lived in student areas before where you are almost guarenteed to be broken in to and therefore are pretty dodge.....but you are a student and just want to live where its all at so put up with that risk!
I want to live where its at - but somewhere pretty nice too!
Not asking for much I know!
Cheers for the quick response!
SilentStatic 14-03-2005, 20:42 Areas near the main uni are pretty safe, just so long as you don't do anything stupid like leave valuables on show in the window.
I'd recommend the top part of Crookes. Decent restaurants nearby and not so many students, as it's up a big hill ;)
Which hospital will you be working at?
Dental school and Childrens Hospital mainly
Will check out the suggestions so far - cheers guys
espadrille 15-03-2005, 05:36 You dont say whether you are renting or wanting to buy?
If you dont mind living with a load of docs as opposed to stewdents try the old Nether Edge Hospital development.
Loads of flats thus rents "competitive"
Close to Ecclesall Road
Walkable to Central Campus Hospitals if youre not a slob
Gated if thats important
cheers

I'm surprised that no one's mentioned Broomhall (the nice part- big stone mansiony-looking things nr Collegiate Cresent!), Broomhill and the Botanical Gardens Area- v. short walking distance to the Children's Hospital and the Dental Hospital and decent areas too!
Good for buying (if you can afford it!) or renting

They're kind of covered with the "Ecclesall Road area" though.
That's interesting--- I currently live in the not-so-nice part of Broomhall... from now on I'll tell people that I live in the Eccy Road area!

I don't quite understand - you referred to Broomhall as being near Collegiate Crescent. Collegiate Crescent is a road off Ecclesall Road so would come under the term "Ecclesall Road area" or "just off Ecclesall Road". When I said Ecclesall Rd I didn't mean he could ONLY live on the actual road itself.
My message wasn't intended to contradict you.
The not-so-nice part of Broomhall starts at the top of the Collegiate Crescent campus- it's less than a two minute walk away from the nicer stone built buildings in that area and is a 5-10 minute walk away from the Botanical Gardens area.
It is just humourous to hear that (according to you at least anyway!) I currently live in the 'decent' Ecclesall Road area! That's certainly news to me!
All this time we've been locking horns with each other! Now that I live in the same 'prestigious' area as you, maybe I should join you in bashing and ridiculing the less desirable and socio-economically deprived areas! ;-)

Ok but just to clarify here, I DON'T live in the Ecclesall Road area, I live in Ecclesall, which is a good 2 - 3 miles away from Collegiate Crescent.
I never said the Ecclesall Road 'area' was decent, I said it's a good place for bars and restaurants and is popular with students. I don't know exactly where you live but it sounds like you live just off Ecclesall Road to me.
Leah try any of the following, all fairly similar to Headingley (as i remember it!):
Broomhill
Crookes
Ecclesall Road
Crosspool
Broomhall
Thanks guys!
Sorry to have started a mini-war between two of you over this eccesall road business!!
I have plenty to go at there - will get over to sheffield sometime soon and check it all out!
Am going to miss Headingley and Leeds but good to hear there are plenty of similar spots in Sheffield that I should be happy in!!!
Cheers xxx

Agree with 4 out of the 5 but can't see how Crosspool fits in there really? It's much more suburban and less 'young and trendy' than the others.

Yeah, Crosspool is like a retirement village.
Leahcar, there is also Ranmoor which offers a wide variety of properties, it's safe and has a choice of drinking and eating places.
veronica 07-04-2005, 04:46 It would be very unwise to live on Ecclesall Road,it gets very busy around 4pm,you wouldnt get much sleep and of course there is the risk of being run over.I dont know if you would come under the road traffic act,if you did of course you risk getting a ticket, thats £40 on the spot you know.As regards cooking, well I shudder to think, however the decision is yours.
