It's a really nice area. The houses are nice and the neighbours are friendly. I know the estate behind where I live is rough though and is also called the Hackenthorpe area so guess it just depends but where I live the houses are in the range of £180,000 to £240,000 I think. Hope that helps :) My best advice is to go and take a look yourselves :) Strix 15-03-2005, 05:46 I'm sure this has been done recently - have you tried 'search'? owdlad 15-03-2005, 08:03 Hi Dilly Have a look at this thread http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7359 willman 17-03-2005, 15:03 born in hackenthorpe married a girl from beighton. hackenthorpe ia an older council estate surrounded by newer developments.beighton was an old village which is now swamped with new named estates. give beighton amiss - my in laws live there & there's nowt to do except crunch you car on the speedbumps & watch boy racers up & down to crystal peaks. Hels 17-03-2005, 15:13 Depends what you're looking for. I've always thought Beighton a nice place. It's handy for the Peaks for shopping, the retail park and there's now couple of more places to eat (Damon's ribs are fab)! It's also close to Rother Valley Country Park so if you're into sailing etc you'll find that a good place. They also do Water Skiing in the summer. There's the golf there too along with a great playground for the little ones. Also you're handy for access to the M1 and M18 - useful if you do a lot of traveling. The supertram can be boarded around Beighton near the Peaks. Other places round about are: Owlthorpe, Woodhouse, Halfway - all worth a look. ianbrownfan 29-03-2005, 22:02 Beighton village is nice place....really nice pizza place called QCs. God area for kids although it can get a bit rough on friday and saturday nights near the pub car parks..mainly kids on scooters etc but nothing serious, all mouth really. yorkiepudd 01-04-2005, 15:27 Can't comment on Beighton, know too little about it. Hackenthorpe has its good areas, but there are certainly some that I would avoid like the plague as well. Most of the 'brick built' council estates are OK, private ownership on these is well above 70% now as can be seen on the kerbside investment. viking 05-04-2005, 10:47 This happened in Hackenthorpe recently CLICK (http://www.southyorks.police.uk/news/details.php?id=979) Chop 05-04-2005, 22:30 Originally posted by Hels Depends what you're looking for. Spot on Hels, Been in Sheffield for 10 years now, first hacky 2-3 years then Gleadless and Now Owlthorpe not that I'm saying other area's are the pits but given both the difference in old and new housing facilities, schooling, shopping, leisure and travel links I'd say this is one of the best area's by far to reside in. SuzyQ 02-05-2005, 20:23 I'm moving to Hackenthorpe shortly and read on a previous 'thread' (Jul 2004), that the Newstead / Weaklands & Scowerdons estates were being demolished. Is this still the case and does anyone know if there are plans to build new housing developments, private or council? Or, are there any other plans for the land? baza1 02-05-2005, 21:21 Beighton as a village use to be nice before all this building work started and all the 2 bob millionaires moved in. Everyone was friendly and class played no part in whether you were good or bad. Council homes were as good as anyone else. However, I don't know Sheffield very well and only became aware of the afore mentioned estates by reading controversial messages from other Hackenthorpe / Beighton residents on this particular website. My main concern is, if these estates are pulled down, what will go up in their place? If its all council owned land, anything could go up, I know from experience. Please don't take offence, just want to know there won't be a motorway or sewage treatment plant at the bottom of my back garden. little_me 04-05-2005, 07:45 Originally posted by Bobbit ...just want to know there won't be a ... sewage treatment plant at the bottom of my back garden. why not? :| willman 05-05-2005, 13:28 if u live in hacky you've always had a sewage plant at the bottom of the garden anyway. only selected properties are being demolished 'cos some are privately owned. a new estate will the be developed of private & tenanted properties. OwlsChick 05-05-2005, 17:30 im at hackenthorpe! i live on the notorious 'Scowerdons' They are currently demolishing the houses, started on a block of 5 houses! We've all been split into phases! starting obviously at phase 1 workin on to phase 6! Phase 6 has been given an estimate of 7-8yrz before completion. I Personally wouldnt think about moving near here whilst they doing this, 3-4 years time im going to be looking at JCB'S Outside my window, what a view eh? SuzyQ 05-05-2005, 17:38 too late owlschick, Ill be movin to a house on Sheffield rd in a few weeks! Do you know wot they (the council) intend to do with the land? Will you stay on the estate or move to somewhere else in Hacky? Is it that bad? OwlsChick 06-05-2005, 10:17 Yeah i know they (the council) are planning to rebuild the houses. but only doing it phase by phase, Like phase 1 they've started work on, after all of phase 1 is knocked down they will re-bulid and move phase 2 residents into the new houses which have been built on phase 1, Then they'll work on phase 2, moving phase 3 into new houses on phase 2 and so on! Im on phase 6 and they've given us a 7-8yr estimate on completion of phase 5. I very much dowt that i'll be still living their when they finally get round to us, i'll probably be married and have had kids by then :) But i know a few people who live on the scowerdons intend to move back on Lickable 06-05-2005, 13:02 I have lived in Hackenthorpe over a year now, and still think the place is great. Its full of nice, warm people. It has its few problems, but where doesnt? |
