No No you got me wrong it wasn't a moan about pensions I was trying to ask the question "In a atheist country why would the gov' office be closed for a full week at easter, mind you i did put my life on the line for that pittance ,but I'm sure that if I'd show op a week late for the war the Army would have been just as understanding:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Yes Flyer you're correct It's quite surprising how just a few religious nutcases can screw things up. I got my army disabled pension early because of the Easter bunny thing but then the people in Blackpool are the best and most efficient government workers I've ever dealt with. That lot in Newcastle are just the opposite, my pension was held back for 3 months because they made a mistaken identity.

My Army pension used to be paid from Glasgow now some private enterprise mob do it and charge me 2 pound 60 P for the privelage. I have a letter in the post to my M.P. and I've also contacted the British Legion. If any other ex service people are being charged for a service the army used to do for nothing then they should also kick up a fuss.

Hmmm.... I've just turned 60, and although I've got my bus pass (you can't see my heels for the dust - Mrs hillsbro and I have never travelled so much) I've got another 5 years to wait for my state pension. I can see that dealing with bureaucratic pension people is a pleasure yet to come. And the pension police sound like a mean lot...

Things might get more complicated if we put into action our plan to emigrate as soon as we tire of cold, dark winters. Can anyone suggest a tax haven (mild climate essential) for a couple of old codgers to retire to, where they'll receive their pensions without any fuss?

I cant say i've had any long term problems but when looking for a place to retire to pick a place where the pension's increase along with U.K,spots like Malta spring to mind ,The pensions in Canada are froze from the day you start,The people at Tyne side give you a list of all in this group if my memory serves me right i do believe Turkey is in the group I've heard great things about that country and its people

flyer, you mean you don't get the April rise like everyone else ? do you get a UK pension or one from Canada ?

I get the minimum UK pension, I wasn't able to contribute anymore into it as I live overseas, but I still get the annual increases.

Thanks, flyer - I'll enquire about retirement havens where my pension will go up as in the UK. Malta sounds nice - I had a holiday there in the 1970s, property is affordable and I know a few people there (my sister's in-laws).

My UK-born friend in Cape Town gets his state pension next year, but when we were there last year he told me that it will be frozen at whatever figure it starts at, so South Africa (a lovely country, if somewhat crime-ridden) may remain a regular holiday bolthole for us, rather than a place to buy the "Dunromin" bungalow. We've also had a few holidays in Turkey. Maybe...

Australian TV report last night: One Australian plans to retire in South America to stretch his pension further. He can't afford to live in Australia. Another pensioner with the same problem is now moving to the Phillippines. Both males. A few unhappy pensioners here in Ozz. One of our familoy in Sheffield planning to retire to Majorca.

It's true poppins what flyer says I know in America you get cost of living increases but in Canada we're still fighting for our rights. Maybe we should all move to America :hihi:
