View Full Version : Flipping 'eck, I'm going to be a dad!
Draggletail 14-03-2005, 17:18 Flipping 'eck, I'm going to be a Dad! Mrs Draggletail (Longshanks) went to the doctors on christmas eve morning with persistent 'tummy ache' and phoned to announce she was pregnant. I must admit, It's still all a bit unreal (unlike the 'bump' where her tum used to be):hihi:
So I'm going to be a Dad for the first time in August - any advice or reminiscences of your own experiences in this department welcomed :)
Nope, am not a Daddy, Still searching for a host but...
'CONGRATS'
All the best to you and Mrs Draggletail...
They say it's quicker by tube though :hihi:
Congratulations.
I can only speak from the mum point of view, but it is the best thing that can happen to you.
Congratulations
They'll be leaving home before you've blinked
Draggletail 14-03-2005, 17:27 Thanks Deejay, Sayz and RPG
Does it mean I will have to 'grow up' and behave like an adult? :suspect: :hihi:
Be prepared for Fergus to inform you of every time his charge requires attention..... As if you won't be able to tell by the screaming you can already hear :hihi:
No not at all it make you younger when you have kids.
Trust me I know.
My friend and his wife had their first child on the NHS...had to wait NINE MONTHS! :P
Congratulations - and get some sleep in now while you still can! :hihi:
Birth-Peace 14-03-2005, 17:38 A BIG CONGRATULATIONS

DaBouncer 14-03-2005, 17:39 Well done mate :D

No worries about having to grow up Draggletail, both of mine meant I had every excuse to have a second childhood, not that I ever grew out of the first one.

Is this the first forum baby?!
And with
this lot (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27371&highlight=auntie+bleach) you'll have no problem choosing a name :hihi:
Moonfire 14-03-2005, 18:54 Purplepippa that was fun
My suggestion is when you get all the things for the baby - nappies, sudecreme, clothes, also get scratch mitts - some babies are born with really long fingernails and it is really not a good idea to cut them as soon as they arrive - I would sugest at least a week so they can harden a little. apart from that - get lots of sleep now - go out as much as you can and make sure you have plenty of Infacol for the wind :)

It sure is. My son's middle name. Although spelled "Christian".
That's wonderful news Draggletail. Hope Mrs. Draggletail is feeling ok. It doesn't seem real at first, does it? It will as the time gets closer!
In the summer of '87, I went to the doctor for what I thought was a lingering case of stomach flu, turned out I was about 6 weeks gone with my girl.
Encourage Mrs. Draggletail to rest whenever she feels tired. Let the sweeping and dusting go for now. That's what husbands are for. Heh. :D
If you like to cook, as the time for the birth gets closer, cook up and freeze meals ahead of time. I took the advice of a friend (who helped me) and we cooked up about a month's worth of meals before my boy was born. I was glad I did as it made life so much easier. The first days are so busy with a new baby, and it takes a load off if dinner is already cooked. Just defrost (in the fridge) the night before.
And help prepare the "furry" child for the baby by letting him sleep in the baby's room, (in his doggie bed of course!) and sniff the baby's clothes, etc.
Our furry child adjusted very well to our first. The real fun starts later when the baby is mobile and takes the dog's toys, (and vice versa) and gets into his food/water bowls etc.
Congratulations again! Best of luck to you and Mrs. Draggletail!
:) Sierra
Draggletail 14-03-2005, 20:26 Thanks, Cake!
And thanks Sierra sound like good advice, especially the doggy and frozen food Ideas. We will give them a go.
We are confident that fergus (the spaniel) will be good with a child - he loves them. If he meets children in the park, he goes up to them, sits down and sort of 'shuffles around' on his bum till they pat him. Main thing I reckon is he should be taught iimmediately that he is still bottom of the pack, i.e greet baby first then quickly greet fergus.....
Something along those lines...
Thanks again:thumbsup:
Congratulations Mr and Mrs Draggletail

Did have a brief look but it seems you need to register to access the info and I don't want to be flooded with junk email. The Pampers one is good though. Have you looked at www.babycentre.co.uk ? I've been using that one quite a lot and there's masses of info on there.
Is this your first baby?
yep its my first i havent heard of that website i'll take a look
thanx. i havent got long its due in may i cant wait just want to get it out,me and boyf are excited although im a bit scared at birth tho.
Congratulations to you both, Draggletail.
You'll spend the first two years getting baby to walk and talk... and the next two years getting baby to sit down and be quiet.
If you're fortunate, you'll emerge unscathed, unlike me...what little of my hair that hasn't fallen out is rapidly turning grey :D
Tip #1 - use Calpol for pain relief when they're older than 3 months and Ibuprofen when they're over 6 months

Sorry this is off topic but wanted to warn everyone.
i agree with wendy i read it in mother and baby magazine.
Moonfire 15-03-2005, 13:07 There is children's Ibroprofen that is supplied by your GP - this is only given in emergencies - like you baby having a temp of 102. but please do discuss all of that kind of thing with your doctor :)
also please do not get your child a baby walker, you know the ones that you put them in and they can walk around - there has been studies to say that it hampers the baby's skill in walking.
for the meantime - get a good buggy and make sure that you wrap them up warm when they go out :)
Kthebean 15-03-2005, 13:10 I think this is another side effect of having bairns, constant conflicting advice :)
Moonfire 15-03-2005, 13:21 absolutely :D
one thing also to do is go with your gut feeling - this is a very important one :)

Well it didn't hamper my kids walking they were walking at 9 1/2 and 10 1/2 months! Most studies are based on a small sample - no 2 children are alike - like statistics these studies can be misinterpreted to suit the needs of the study so take that sort thing with a "pinch of salt" so to speak. However there are safety issues with them as they tip up easily.:D
Moonfire 15-03-2005, 13:36 both mine did too - I'm just going off data produced by the NCMA (National Childminding Assocciation) :)

Thanks for the info ladies, I did mean Ibuprofen specifically for young 'uns - Nurofen for Children (www.nurofen.co.uk/main.asp?pid=216)
As well as the standard orange flavour, there's now a strawberry variant too!

Never heard of this variety moonfire is it a recent development? It certainly wasn't around when my two were young (they are nearly 19 and 15 now).
graceomally 15-03-2005, 13:57 Can't resist saying congratulations, altho' i should be working.
Don't try growing up, just keep playing and laughing, it gets you through the rough bits and its doesn't hurt when things are going well. And its a good idea if your sprog learns to laugh and smile first those are the most important things so you might as well concentrate on the fun and let little dragontail tell you when its time for the walking talking and clever stuff.
REALLY HOPE your bump turns out one of those nice fat happy babes that cries in a teeny weeny way and sleeps all night and laughs all day. If you find your bump cries all the time when its not inside anymore, my recommendation is first find a kind deaf old lady and let her borrow little D freely, second be patient and kind to yourselves/each other it never lasts too long (3 months is the max apparently then they settle down and start digesting properly).
Our 2 were the WORST babies ever (in terms of quieteness) but they make up for it so often it was worth all the burping and farting and carting stuff about. Now they're almost fledged and I would never change a thing, not even the 500 mile an hour poo incident!
ENJOY it, and best wishes to you.
Oh and MRs D won't agree with this I bet, but honestly we used terry nappies with liners and plastic pants. They didn't leak like the others so instead of washing whole suits we just washed the nappies, with liners the poo goes in the loo, not all over you. Also we used to leave them undone, just underneath the baby in warm weather or indoors (boys will fountain tho' so you have to fasten it), and they really hardly ever had rashes. They got good at potties early too, since a ton of wet cotton is uncomfortable and impedes walking when you start getting mobile. You can't leave it if they fill these ones, its all change on the spot so they are dry and clean all the time. Modern nappies let you leave them sitting in it and its not the best really altho' it seems easy. You can hire terries triangles now, they come with a waterproof backing and you can wash and dry them easily and no pins they come with fasteners. Not sure where u get them tho' as my sister used these posh ones, I used the old square ones.
would put a big smilly thing on but not sure how to, so imagine it.
Oh yea and buy a giant size pot of pseudocreme from the chemists, and a tube of Kamillosan cream if you need nothing else you will need them.
happy sproggy dragontails!

Thank you Grace. Actually Mr Draggletail favours disposable nappies whereas I was thinking of trying terries (thinking of the environment). How did you cope with all the extra washing and poo though?

This is what I've been told by some people - it depends on the attitude of the sonographer. Apparently people have tried sueing the hospital if they are told the wrong gender so they are very reluctant to do so. What is the world coming to?
Longshanks I think graceomally probably means sudocreme - it's one of the best creams to use for nappy rash. Don't know about the other one though never heard of that myself or needed it with my 2 as sudocreme cleared any problem they had quick sharp! I used both terries and disposables - terries for the first 6 week with my daughter then disposable as I was changing her every hour but my son wet his more so didn't last 6 week with him.
Moonfire 15-03-2005, 14:54 Sudacreme is for nappy rash and Kamissillan is when you have sore nipples when breast feeding

Congratulations. They drive you mad but they're worth it.
They told us what sex our baby is at the Jessop (we asked). We're having a baby boy, due on 1st April!
That will be 3 kids and that's enough!! I'm under orders to go for the snip as soon as this one pops out OK. :shakes:  :help:  :shakes:
Does anyone know what info is printed on the baby scan pictures - I'm just curious ?
Draggletail 18-03-2005, 10:34 I think It's just the time and date of the scan..... can't find ours. Mrs Draggletail has put it somewhere 'safe' :D
Sorry - I meant the info that's on the bottom right of the picture.
On my daughter's scan pic it says -
5/2
70/1
6/74
14.1cm
on my daughter-in-laws:-
5/1/1
60/72
10.0cm
The bottom row of figures are self-explanatory but I'm curious as to what the others mean - one would, I thought, be a record of the number of weeks. I never had a scan during my pregnancies but knew what all the written notes meant.
 CONGRATULATIONS... Parents to be...
Best wishes to you both :)

At least they don't have to grow up in SE13! ;) :D

Flipping 'eck, I'm going to be a Dad! Mrs Draggletail (Longshanks) went to the doctors on christmas eve morning with persistent 'tummy ache' and phoned to announce she was pregnant. I must admit, It's still all a bit unreal (unlike the 'bump' where her tum used to be):hihi:
So I'm going to be a Dad for the first time in August - any advice or reminiscences of your own experiences in this department welcomed :)
wtg.
Morning Sickness is not just in the morning, and can go on until week 21, so you need to be sweet to her even though she's tired, nauseous, impatient, and plain brassed off. If she gets it at all.
Unconditional love is all you need. Everything else will come naturally. Listen to what others have to say, but if it feels wrong, don't do it, and if it feels right - do.
Don't worry about "how to be a father". Men made good fathers before the invention of language - you know what you are doing, you just have to listen to yourself when it comes to bringing up the child.
And as they get older, and they do, real quick, enjoy every minute of it - choose your battles, because there will be battles. Don't force conflicts over inconsequentialities. Being told off angrily has much more effect if it is not for some obviously minor infraction or misunderstanding. Reserve it's use for important lessons. (IMO)
And I only have a 4 year old son. Those with older children and more children will be able to add a lot more I expect, which I'm looking forward to.
Any new yet mate? not seen any congratulations cars on the windowsill so i presume its hanging in there!!!
Draggletail 18-08-2005, 16:34 Thanks to everyone who asked, yes redrobbo break open the stellas!
Longshanks gave birth to a boy, Daniel, at the Jessop wing at the Hallamshire yesterday morning (wed 17th) at 11:23 after a eleven and a half hour labour. He weighed 8lb 9oz at birth (ouch!)
The home birth didn't go as planned, But mum and baby are doing fine and are coming home tomorrow (Friday)
I love him to bits already! I even changed my first ever nappy today :D

lizzmobile 18-08-2005, 20:14 Congrats to the Draggletail family! How wonderful! And well done Mrs D for not having a c/section! What a darling little treasure, he looks very serene. Babies are just so precious. Welcome to the ride of your life, it will never be the same again.
I'm a breastfeeding counsellor if any information is required but I'm sure Mrs D will be fine.
Hugs and blessings to all 3
