DaBouncer 14-03-2005, 12:39 While trying to find the telephone details for Sheffield Interchange (which I haven't yet found so if you know them - please post them  ) I found this page.

Aint it strange the things you can find when you google for something.
Obviously a bus person, I found it interesting to see this page on the web.
Anyone else found anything Sheffield Related when googling for something else?

The reason why travelline has a Rotherham, number is that when it was originally set up Rotherham could be reached as a 'local' call rate from anywhere in S. Yorkshire. Sheffield couldn't.
I was working with the IT people at SYPTE at the time and the comms guy had great fun getting that sorted out!
Also, best to go through the main switch - Travelline is configured as a travel information helpline and they're not best positioned for transferring calls.

I always thought that the majority of the county of South Yorkshire was 0114...
...If 0114 2xxxxxxxx is Sheffield, where is 0114 3 or 0114 4 etc.
Like with us here: 01322 3 is my area, 01322 4 is Belvedere; etc, etc.
Rather interestingly, most of South Yorkshire has the "S" prefixed postode...
I'll get my coat:D

Wasn't that because alot of the city of Sheffield was in the county of Derbyshire?

I was working at Yorkshire Cable at the time Joe and was involved in setting that up. We weren't allowed to sell what were then 0345 numbers for local rate calls so by setting up 01709 all of South Yorkshire would be charged local rate. If a Sheffield number had been set up Doncaster would have been charged national rate. I remember the negotiations and the to-ing and fro-ing well!
redrobbo 15-03-2005, 00:41 The original poster asked if anyone had found a Sheffield related websiite whilst googling. I was googling for a ski centre in Snowdonia and came across a link to a host of photos of milestones. I got hooked. Sheffield isn't mentioned by name, but you can find some interesting Sheffield milestone photos by looking up Yorkshire under the list of counties.
My computer skills don't stretch to posting a website address, but if you google milestonesweb - you will find this fascinating website.

No, 0114 is Sheffield, not 0114 2. It just so happens that so far they haven't started issuing numbers starting 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 yet.
