Hi everyone,

I just thought I'd give Sheffield Uni's relaunched online newspaper a quick airing to you local web savvies.

www.sheffieldbase.com (http://www.sheffieldbase.com)

Any comments or ideas? Also, if you know of any local events or issues which would be of interest to a primarily student audience, give us a shout at sheffieldbase@shef.ac.uk

Cheers :D

Well for a start if you were to stick a link on your site to here I'm sure Geoff would puta reciprocal link to your site in the 'Sheffield Links' section.

A good start indeed, I s'pose I'd better get round to coding a links page too... ;)

I tried contacting the previous editor about 2 times for a link exchange, but they didn't even reply with a "no thanks". In return for your "plug" here I do hope you will eventually return the favour from your site?

Geoff

PS. Looks a lot better than before :)

Geoff,

The previous site was a Dreamweaver effort with no real understanding of web development behind it - the idea of a link exchange was probably alien to whoever dealt with your emails.

Now that we've got a full-time webmaster things will hopefully change. I'll have a links page up by the end of the day, and Sheffield Forum will be one of the first lucky links ;)

Looks great - thank you :)

What happened to SHeP (I think that's right?) ?

Yep, the Sh Electronic Press was the original prototype for SheffieldBase. Unfortunately the viscious circle of

no readers -> no contributers -> no stories -> no readers

struck ShEP heavily, but a dedicated team over the last couple of years has helped to get SheffieldBase to the relatively strong position it has today.

The tough job of making a quality product has been successfully achieved, now it's just as difficult to market the site and gain new readers on a small budget - an issue I'm sure sheffieldforum.co.uk is familiar with!

martynj - if you can come up with some easily parsable headline feed then I'll put it up on the Sure site.

Would it also be possible to return a link to us, as last year your editor was so insistant that we give you a prominent link?

Cheers,
Graham.

> Sure

Yep, I'll have look into doing an RSS feed or just a plain XML output. I haven't done either before, but I'm sure they can't be that difficult... can they?? ;)

A link back to Sure won't be a problem. I'll give you a shout on the Sure FM email address once I've got something to work with.

Cheers

Sheffield Information Technology Committee. :)

Are you sure USIT was the acronym people used? That's almost as good as the Cambridge University Network Team.

wow!

the site is so much better than it was last year. no offence to tom et al who did the best they could, but a proper editor makes all the difference.

Thanks! Although I'm not sure I can take all the credit - whilst the redesign of the site is down to some techno-boffination on my part, the top notch content is down to the constantly evolving editorial team. Tom has been a great writer for us although since he graduated he hasn't been able to take part this year.

I might take this opportunity to ask if there's any Sheffield Uni students reading the forum who would like to write a story for sheffieldbase.com? We'd love to hear from anyone and don't require any sort of commitment - just write about whatever you're interested in. Our email address is on the site.

Cheers

Hi guyz - just reading thru the posts on the site about sheffieldbase.com

Just to introduce myself - I'm one of the senior editors that has taken over the site this year.

Glad to see you like the new look site - that's down to Martyn. The content is down to a team of dedicated writers.

Please keep visiting the site, let us know of any stories and feel free to get in touch!

Thanks,

Nice plug - welcome to the forum :P

Just read this interesting story:
http://www.sheffieldbase.com/story.php?s=146

But when the reporter says "Over 150 students began a 24-hour occupation of University House last night..." it might be nice to know what day the article was actually published? I looked and looked but the story didn't seem to have a published on date?

:loopy:

Still no date on the story - it just says "Tuesday" now!

Surely it would be a good idea to include the date each online news story was published?

Yep, a fair point. The stories are automatically dated when uploaded, so I should add a date tag at the top of each story.

It'll be in the next round of modifications :)
