I live on Eccelsall Road and am wanting to join a gym. Anyone recommend a good one and any prices for membership? It has to be a mixed gym as my bloke wants to join too.

Greens is just of Ecclessal Road, supposed be a good gym.

I would recommend the Virgin one down near Heely Bottom. USed to be a Green's member, but am now at Virgin. If you do join there, can you use me as a referrer.

Virgin is ok but very very expensive!!!! Greens is brilliant, friendly staff, good facilities, ace classes and not too expensive!!!!

If you want a trail then mention me cos then we both get loads of free stuff :D :D

I go to Virgin too, and would recommend it, but Greens is cheaper and nearer for you.

Atgreens you pay per month and it works out to about £40 a month altho when i joined i got 10 free sunbed sessions :D

Its cheaper if you don't go at the busy times- straight after 5pm and they give you a discount for that too.

and i didn't pay a joining fee either.

Is Greens a minimum contrtact ?

At Virgin you can cancel after 1 month if you want, but some gyms make you stay for a year (like Esporta).

It's worth asking when you sign-up.

Cheers guys! I have an info pack on its way to my house for both Greens and Virgin!

Used to be that at Greens there was an option whereby you had a reduced base membership and then paid each time you went, or the option to pay a standard fee.


Greens offered a reduction for a couple joining, Virgin don't, but do offer certain occupations (e.g. Health Service) a reduction.

Green's have a limited spa area (3 hot tubs, 1 turkish, 1 sauna),

Virgin have a much larger hot tub area, 1 turkish, 1 sauna, and 1 intermediate.

Green's don't do children, Virgin do, at limited times.

My wife found the testosterone levels higher at Green's than at Virgin, especially with the weights area, as opposed to the cardio area as they were in different rooms. At Virgin it is more mixed up. At Virgin you can book your classes online.

Virgin has a "ladies only" section too.

The Hallamshire Tennis & Squash club has a little gym. You can PAYG for £35 joining + about £3.50 per visit. Or it's about £325 for full annual unlimited.

But don't all join 'cos you'll get in my way :P

dunno bout that hallamshire gym, small and not great, i go for the tennis, try greens if u live on eccy rd, its close and cheaper than vigin..im told
