Hi there,

Posted about this already I think but we got a bit further so I will explain...

I have a NetGear wireless router. I used this fine with my old laptop here, but I cannot get it to work on my new laptop.

The laptop finds the router, but I can't connect to the net. Everything is plugged in as before, but it keeps asking for some sort of key, then whatever I enter (didn't have to enter owt before) it says Error, so won't connect.

Help appreciated? x

it seems to that your router is requesting a wep key! this can be 10 or 28 letters and figures, your router will have been made secured when it was setup to your first laptop/pc you need to find this key. you can get this help from netgear if they are the manufacturers of your router ok!

You must have set up encryption which prevents anyone without the key using your wireless connection. If you can't remember you key, then the best thing to do is log in to the setup page of the router and enter a new key (or passphrase that will generate a key for you).
If your router is currently set to WEP change it to WPA its a lot more secure.
You may have to connect an ethernet cable to do this if you can't connect wirelessly.
Then enter the key into your laptop when prompted.

you have either a key or a pass phrase, you may need to recofigure your settings and I find it easier to set a pass phrase for the router (such as a known password to you)

I have a usb connection for wireless which stores all the passkeys for individual wireless units so when I'm in the area it auto connects to that network

Open Internet Explorer and enter 192.168.0.1 in the address bar.

It will then ask for a username and password, the default setting is admin and password, but yours might be different, have a look on the underside of your router.

Once open, select Wireless Settings and then select WPA-PSK (WEP isnt secure) and enter a password where it says Network Key. Select apply and then logout.

When you want to connect to your router with your laptops, simply enter the new password.

Hi there,

Well a few websites have given this address and it's on my router but when I access it from AOL it gives some AOL connection page with just options to test, nothing about the router (this is when router not conencted obviously), and when trying to access in IE window instead of AOL it says address not recognised etc.

Any dieas?

When changing the routers settings, you should always use a LAN cable, rather than trying to do it wirelessly.

If 192.168.0.1 still doesnt work Click the Start menu (bottom left) and click Run.

Enter cmd and click OK, and a black command window should open.

Enter ipconfig /all and press enter.

A list should now appear, the setting you want to find is Default Gateway, use this address instead of 192.168.0.1

Hiya, yeah when I am accessing the net I am using the normal broadband modem etc., the router and everything is unconnected at the mo.

I am using Vista so can't find the 'run' button in the start menu- any ideas?

When I find this option, can I still do it all without the router being plugged in?

From memory on vista, use the search / finder thing and type in cmd
this should find the command prompt for you.
All of this needs to be done with the router plugged in

So should I d/c from the internet, plug the router back in and then follow the above instructions for it to be OK?

You should be able to connect to the netgear routher with an ethernet cable. It is this one you need to be configuring as the settings are specific to the router. Take it your aol modem and then connect the netgear via an ethernet connection. You should the be able to follow the instructions

How are you connecting to the internet at the moment, are you using a usb modem?

Just using my normal AOL broadband with the BT modem they provided when I signed up (connected normally via yellow ethernet cable from laptop to modem and to phoneline).

Obv. when the wireless router is in I can't connect to internet so have to keep d/c it to come online and find help.

So the above steps I have to take whilst the NetGear router is plugged into the laptop via the ethernet cable and that's all- not plugging the normal modem into the router etc?

you should be able to connect to the internet when the laptop is plaugged into the router with an ethernet cable, so you don't need to keep swapping arund.

PLug the router in to the laptop, give it approx 1 min for the laptop to connect to the router then type 192.168.0.1 into the address bar of internet explorer. this should give you the login page for the router. The default username and password are usually admin and password

Hiya, no it won't work;. I unplugged eveyrthing from normal modem, plugged DSL line and ethernet cable into NetGear one, power on etc. ut won't connect to net even as non-wireless.

I feel so frustrated as it worked fine before we got new laptop!!!!
