View Full Version : Who watched "Number 1 Ladies Detective Agency" tonight?
Plain Talker 23-03-2008, 22:47 Who watched this tonight (sunday)?
I did and thoroughly enjoyed it. Excellently played, IMO.
The last work of Anthony Minghella :( .
fox20thc 23-03-2008, 22:48 I just downloaded it on BBCiplayer, so its worth watching?
Plain Talker 23-03-2008, 22:51 I enjoyed it, Fox. It's a bit decieving, seems as though it's going to be very gentle and slow, but there is a dark underside to the story. The scenery and singing are beautiful!
I loved the lady who played the lead character, "Mma" Ramotswe. She was certainly "traditionally built!"

yup! :D I certainly am. Even if I do not match up to the magnificent proportions of Mma Ramotswe.

Is it a series PT, or just a one off ?
Plain Talker 23-03-2008, 23:04 I understand there will be a series next year

There's a reason that the singing was beautiful- playing Precious Ramotswe was Jill Scott, amazingly voiced jazz singer extraordinaire!
Plain Talker 23-03-2008, 23:06 I thought I recognised her... !! (Although the most-excellent singing wasn't "jazz")
pattricia 23-03-2008, 23:07 I understand there will be a series next year
Fantastic. One of the best things on t.v. for ages.
purdyamos 24-03-2008, 21:53 I've just watched this on iplayer with a big pot of redbush tea, though I could have done with watching it on my big TV screen. It was absolutely beautiful, and such a change to see a glorious representation of Africa for once. I have never read the books, so i don't know how they compare to the film.
It's terribly sad that Anthony Minghella died so suddenly, and this was his inadvertent epitaph. It's well worth catching on iplayer if anyone missed it.
And she painted her office the same colour as my kitchen!
I loved it , My friend lives in Zimbabwe and goes to Botswana to buy food so i could see how beautiful it was........ i would love to live there oneday

Yes, the scenery was stunning. All that sun !!
Swan_Vesta 24-03-2008, 22:56 I'm fairly sure that Radio 4 did a production of this last year should you fancy the audio version.

Isn't she just!
Big fan of Jill Scott from hearing "Slowly, Surely" on a Master's @ Work mix.

It literally stopped me in my tracks. :o
We feature her releases on the show we present - check the links below.
Her honey dripped voice blew me away, and has continued too.
She's stunningly beautiful too.
Anyway, well done to all involved. Thought it was lovely
Fantastic. One of the best things on t.v. for ages.
I have read three of andrew macCall Smiths No.1 Ladies Detective Agency books, and I couldn't put them down.
This Sundays drama, was great, very funny in parts, especially the
secretary, couldn't stop laughing at her. She was very good.
Kristian 25-03-2008, 21:46 I watched the show on Sunday night with a little trepidation.
I have been a fan of the books for a number of years, and didn't think the slow pace and gentleness of the stories would transfer well to the screen; I was pleasantly surprised overall. Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi look just as I had pictured in my head, but Rra JLB Matekoni should have been thinner. :) I'm sure he's referenced as being thin in the books actually.
I drove Meaks mad by saying stuff like 'That character didn't exist in the books' and 'She didn't meet him until book four' :hihi:
Anyone who enjoyed the show really should try the books. The show was good, but the books are great. :)
Bush tea anyone? :D

I borrowed the books from someone who told me they were very good.
But I would think you can get them from the library.
