My automatic update icon is seen in the start bar at the bottom of the screen, and it has recently installed a few updates for the service pack. All the updates that were listed have been successfully installed but it keeps saying there is one ready for installation - 'Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181)'

I download this update which it says has been downloaded successfully, then when I go to shut down and the exclamation mark appears on the red on/off button I click that, then it installs the update, then shuts down. However, every time I start up the computer, it says the update is ready for installation. in the automatic update menu again. - So it never seems to install. Anyone know what the problem could be?

That's funny because mine had an annoying one which it kept saying was available but continually failed to download.
fortunately now I have SP1 installed everything is resolved. And I have no strange issues any longer.

You don't have Comodo Firewall Pro by any chance do you? i always have trouble with windows update cause of it, and always have to disable it ( which i did for installing service pack 1) or on some occasions had to uninstall it while i installed the updates. Even if you don't have comodo it might be a firewall problem.
