View Full Version : Heights of Abraham/Matlock Bath walk Sun 30th March
An 8 mile walk will take place next Sunday, 30th March starting from the car park at Artists Corner, Matlock Bath at 10.45 a.m.
I'm sure someone will post some information about where "Artists Corner" car park is exactly, but the best directions I can give anybody at the moment is that it is situated on the left hand side of the A6 Derby Road, and it is oppsite St Johns Road. I don't think it'll be too hard to find because there aren't all that many car parks in Matlock Bath as far as I can remember!
As there is no bus directly to Matlock Bath, I think we'll have to stick to cars this week, so the offer of spare places as usual will be appreciated. As a starter I can offer lifts to 2 people.
The walk takes us through fields and wooded hillsides, and as far as I can see will offer some stunning views of the Derwent Valley, Riber Castle and all the attractions of the Matlock Bath area.
Just one word of warning.............the ascent on this walk is 1200feet :hihi: Bring it on baby!

Think we might have to give this a miss:o
Mr Inkie and Inkie Major up for this one - we have room in the car for 3 - does anyone need a lift?
Hi - we'll be going on this one - don't know who needs a lift with who, bu we're willing to give or to accept a lift - so, I suppose we need to count up how many are going & divide between cars accordingly!
neoteric 24-03-2008, 15:55 Sounds a good walk - I don't mind the ascents it's the descents that get me.
Would appreciate a lift from Norfolk Park /Town area.
I'm sure we could oblige Neo!
busy lizzie 24-03-2008, 18:58 i will be missing for this one, off to Stratford for the weekend to celebrate the parents 50th anniversary. can't come next week either :(
See you soon
Galloway 28-03-2008, 18:11 Am hoping to join you on this one (weather & ribs permitting!).
I think Artist's Corner Car Park is the P&D one on left hand side just before Matlock Bath itself (not too far after The Boat pub which is on right hand side). Isn't it where all the folks with canoes park?
parkwoman 28-03-2008, 20:10 We're hoping to join you for this one, depending on the weather and if we can get our act together in time after putting the clocks forward. Not too sure how Rob's dodgy knee will cope if it's very steep, though, so may not complete it all.

Yes, you're spot on with the directions Galloway. That's what I was trying to say, but it came out a bit differently when I tried to describe the meeting point. Cheers for that.
Just to put you right on one thing though, people with canoes paddle when they use them, not park ;)
I am going to reluctantly cry off this one. I'll be out celebrating Godzilla's birthday tonight and seeing as I haven't been home for a week I think I'll spend Sunday slobbing and generally getting myself together for a return to work.
Hope everyone else has a great time

We used to have a "taxman" frequent this Group many moons ago, are you something he spawned, or are you one and the same? Cos if you are, it's your round mate :D
Welcome back, you've been sorely missed!

Seconded !
Ta for the welcome back and thanks to the offer of a lift from Scoobz I shall be coming on this walk!
putting the clocks forward.
.
WELL REMEMBERED PARKWOMAN! :D
Hi from sunny Florida! Im sorry im going to miss this one it sounds good. I hope you will be able to repeat it some time again. See you soon.
An excellent walk in brilliant sunshine. Nice to be able to meet up with everyone again ;) and a great time was had by all slipping and sliding around in the mud.
Not too sure about the map reading - I don't believe public footpaths usually take you through fences of barbed wire :P
Anyway, here (http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/saulmcintyre/MatlockBath)are my photos!
Hi Nooka, nice to hear from you in the sunny old US of A. You might be surprised to hear that it's also sunny here, albeit not factor 15 weather I'm afraid :(
Anyway, at least it didn't rain on us today, and it was warm enough for people to start shedding a few layers in the lovely sunny hills above Matlock Bath.
Not a walk today for the mud shirkers though, or for anyone who doesn't mind getting lost (well, whats a slight diversion from the route matter now and again when you're having fun :D ) We also had a spot of limboing under a fence, sliding down hillsides, sliding up hillsides, and some extreme amounts of mickey-taking :suspect:
All-in-all, a brilliant day out, in some challenging conditions with a great bunch of people.
These people being Whitemutt, Sherwood1, Alberto, Taxman, Billysmum, Neily, Louise, Hemlock, Scoobz, Zippy, Galloway, Neoteric, Inkie, Inkie Major, Parkwoman, Rob and Fuzzle. 17 altogether.
Roll on `The Big Un` next Sunday :D
neoteric 30-03-2008, 19:21 Nice to hear from you too Nooka - hope you are enjoying yourself.
We had another great day out walking, bright sunshine, plenty of mud and oh those uphill bits - I'm really feeling it now. I even tried some mud skiing on the way down.
Not sure where the original 8 miles estimate came from scoobz?
My GPS only made it 5.5 when I'd added it all up - I even went back and checked on the OS map.
Also it was Parkwomans, Whitemuts and my 1st anniversary with the walking group - happy anniversary:D and lots more enjoyable walks to come in the following year I'm sure.
Thanks to Hemlock and Alberto for the lift, much appreciated.

Well, it was certainly muddy....& steep......did someone tell me the 3 peaks were twice as steep as this??!!:o Well, I'm sure you'd all appreciate someone cleaning up for you, making food for your return, cleaning your boots..:D
I can't upload my photos yet, i've run out of space:(
Nice photos Taxman & Neoteric - as per usual!
Thank you Neo for helping me with my pint - I'm sure it was a great sacrifice:hihi: Also, thank you for the ice cream as well:love:
I'm hoping my foot will be better by Thursday - teach me to try cheating by travelling down on my bum!:loopy:
billysmum 30-03-2008, 20:24 Another great walk today, even though it was very very muddy. In fact I dont think I've ever seen so much of the stuff. I can't believe that I managed to stay upright.:hihi:
The pics look good once again. Thank goodness there were none of all the hairy tattoed bikers that we saw.

What happened to your foot Hemlock?
What happened to your foot Hemlock?
I decided to start getting my excuses in now for not being able to manage the 3 peaks walks :hihi:
Galloway 31-03-2008, 09:48 Still can't stop singing "Mud, glorious mud" tra la la...........
What a great day & with such sound effects too - was more like a day at the fun fair with all the screams, giggles, squawking etc. & that was from us, not Gulliver's Kingdom!
This is what real walking is about; good company, lots of laughs & the bonus of great weather.
Hope we can do this one again but p'raps in less muddy conditions & to include the corner which we cut off (deliberately, of course :D)
Great photos, as always. Was Neilly singing "Tip toe through the Tulips" on one of them?!
At last I've bought some more space for my photos, so here (http://picasaweb.google.com/paulinezel/MatlockBath) they are.

Great photos as usual Hemlock!
There seems to be one missing however, but I suspect the world is not yet ready for that particular horror :D

Looks more like a Party Seven:hihi:

Oh dear, Party Seven...... I'm afraid I remember that. Watneys wasn't it? And what a load of tosh it was too! Anyway, you can't have a 7 pack, packs only come in even numbers, so it HAS to be a six-pack, sorry :D

It's obviously emergancy supplies laid down just in case you get lost on one of our adventurous walks - enough to keep you going for weeks - very sensible:D (Mr hemlock insists his is for insulation & protection purposes - his own personal 'airbag':loopy:)
