View Full Version : Movie: Constantine
Saw an advanced preview of this today and was quite impressed.
As a fan of the comics I was always dubious about Keanu playing the role but he wasn't too bad. One of the better comic book films you'll see.....
Beakerzoid 13-03-2005, 23:55 I agree. Saw this on Wednesday and, as a fan of the Hellblazer comics, went in unsure, but walked out wanting more! You don't even need to be a comic fan to follow it (so don't let that put you off guys and gals!)
Check out my full review over at my reviews site ( http://atoz.movingpictures.me.uk )
Cutglass 14-03-2005, 10:33 saw it last week and I thought it was Brilliant!! I had heard that Keanu wasn't considered a good choice to play the part of constantine but I thought he did really well and it definitely left me wanting more!! Loved the Hell scenes and the guy who played the devil was a cracker! Not too sure about Gavin Rossdale tho, but he proved me wrong too!
So I definitely recommend it to anyone and like Beakerzoid said, you don't need to be a fan of comics to enjoy it!!
I don't know, it was an enjoyable watch, but having never read any of the comics, it did seem very confusing! I wasn't quite sure what exactly the black man in the club was meant to be. Some sort of regulator? Why was he so hard?
Having said that, it was action packed and most of the time the action looked cool with only a couple of moments where the CGI looked a bit odd!
funkyukgal 14-03-2005, 12:03 Watched it last night! It was really good, not a dull moment. Enjoyed it alot! Already waiting for the sequel to come out!
Beakerzoid- Is your name Russel?
Beakerzoid 14-03-2005, 12:35 Nope..I'm not a Russell, I'm an Andy.
haha u look a bit different to russ don't you andy!!
funkyukgal 14-03-2005, 18:34 okay will be looking for an Andy...:D
Bikertec 14-03-2005, 18:50 Having not seen any of the comics I was a bit confused in certain parts.:(
it is refreshingly confusing in parts. I like the way they just decide not to tell you everything. Raed the comics guys, its worth it....

but yes, back on topic...a lot of people don't know about the little snippet at the end of Constantine after the credits!!! def worth waiting for 5 mins of credits to roll out to see ;-)
funkyukgal 15-03-2005, 02:14 Nooooooooooooooo why didnt you tell me that before??
Think ill have to go and watch it again 8)
Soooo where are you usually? front of house? food counter? ticket collector? stalking behide Andy..?
Im gonna be slyly looking at everyones name badge now! lol
i'm front of house, either taking tickets on one of the corridors or going round cleaning up the screens after the mucky devils have been in,in which case it's unlikely that you'll ever see me!!
and i've lost my name badge so you won't know me lol
that reminds me andy, can i have a new one please?!? ta lol
I watched Constantine this weekend and realy enjoyed it, despite Canoe being in it.
The special effects in Hell were very good.
i bought it last week and i really liked it , btw did anyone get the 2 disc version of it as i want to no if the extras are actually worth watching
The guy in the video shop said they only got the one disk version because the second disk was (he said) "a load of crap that no-one watches".
Tubthump 20-07-2005, 10:30 Constantine is undoubtedly an enjoyable romp but a lot of liberties have been taken from the original Hellblazer. My worry is that the net result will, like so many other movie adaptations of comics "for Mature readers", dilute the impact of the source material. Other examples: From Hell, League Of Extaordinary Gentlemen, Elektra. The only film that I've seen recently to have properly rendered the mood and sensibility of a graphic novel is Sin City. I wait with nervous trepidation for the forthcoming Watchmen, and hope and pray that The Sandman is left unsullied.
I hope and pray that they never try and make Sandman . They away Hollywood....
and to be frank. Yes the League, from Hell etc were pretty badly done (although the films are enjoyable tosh) at least it will make people aware of the source material.
I fear for V for Vendetta. Moore has already distanced himself
Tubthump 20-07-2005, 12:18 They do draw attention to the source materials, but often to a negative detriment. I doubt that many people who saw League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen will be rushing to go and buy the comics, which is a shame. Likewise with From Hell. The film isn't bad, but not really inspiring either. Anyone likely to have seen the film without having read the book are unlikely to have been so overwhelmed that they feel compelled to rush out to Forbidden Planet and buy it. Again: a shame, because it's a masterpiece.
krimsonkaos 06-09-2005, 15:10 Having seen Constantine a few times now, I've got say ... Nooooooooooooooo!
Keanu Reeves is not British; John Constantine is. New York (or whatever city it's meant to be) is not London! I'm not a Hellblazer expert but f'chrissake, it's like suddenly suggesting that Wickerman took place in downtown Miami.
It. Just. Doesn't. Work.
When will Hollywood learn to stop changing things just to appeal to the lowest common denominator?
And what is it with Keanu Reeves? He does Matrix and suddenly he's the all-singing, all-dancing anti-hero of America. It's only my opinion but the guy can not act - his best role was Bill & Ted.
They even dicked around with Constantine's deal with the devil (though I'm surprised they kept the Gabriel storyline in there). It just feels like 'America Saves The Day' again and to be honest, I'm getting fed up with it.
Gah, gotta watch Sin City again now, just to get the bad taste outta my mouth.
Oh, and Tubthump - keep an eye out for V For Vendetta. It's another Alan Moore story and very dark. From all accounts the movie's pretty awesome.
Watchmen? Last I heard was that it was stuck in pre-prod. hell, but a friend and I were debating who'd play Rorschach...
And Sandman? Neil Gaiman, from what I've read, doesn't want to let go of any of the Endless stories until he's happy with the treatment. I hope that stays the case.

me too.
pls also bear in mind it's usually american money paying for films to be shown to a mainly american audience.
you'll never get authenticity whilst people are trying to make a profit.
some people may not even like the novel/comic portrayal and feel the film is an improvement, after all the films are only "based" on characters.

I understand the profit-chasing behind the changes, but for once, just once, I'd like to see a film that at least tries to be as close to the original as possible. Either that or admit from the word go that it's only based on an original work. I still can't watch Bram Stoker's Dracula or Mary Shelley's Frankenstein without rocking uncontrollably. I didn't even realise anybody else had written other versions....
I also agree that some people might prefer the movies to the original source, but as has been mentioned, if the movie is just a diluted form of the original (as with Constantine, League and From Hell) then what happens when the movie fans want more of the same from the comics?
At the end of the day, anything I say is nothing more than an opinion so feel free to respect or ignore it as you see fit. Hell, everybody's got different tastes, right?

agree totally on the opinion. personally i disliked Judge Dredd, but i did try to view the others u have mentioned as a creation in their own right. unfortunately LOTR for me was far better than the books but i think i could be a minority on here.
as an avid comic & book reader i do find it satisfying when the film does resemble the storyline, but i feel that this will get further away whilst the films are based on old stories. (not enough reason for cgi in some old books)
