View Full Version : Looking for a neutered buck rescue rat...
Hi until this week I had 3 female rats except I lost one a couple of days ago to multiple strokes. Me and my partner would now like a male rat to join our girlies. I obviously don't want to get an intact buck and neuter him just so he can live with girls that would be really cruel. I am more than willing to take on a rescue male old or young as long as he is neutered. Thanks.
xxhunniixx 22-03-2008, 14:42 hi theres a few in rspca at bawtry sorry didnt check sex or anythig not my cup of tea lol!
Moonbird 22-03-2008, 14:46 I think its a bit doubtful that you will find a rescued rat already neutered, I'm sure that it wouldn't be cruel to neuter one, he would have a lovely life with your girls :)
I don't think its cruel to neuter them for medical or behavioural reasons but the op can be fairly dangerous sometimes and for that reason for the sake of living with girls I don't think its fair. I will just keep searching until one comes along although I know it might be doubtful. I know that sometimes on here people give their on up for adopton if they can't cope with them anymore so you never know. Will look into RSPA.
*Peaches* 22-03-2008, 14:55 have you tried fancy rats forum?
Yes I have thanks Peaches- I am a member. There aren't any available at moment but will keep checking. I've just mailed rspca so hopefully they will get back to me. Thanks everyone for your replies!:)

Yes I know its not so straight forward in small animals, and I understand your thinking.
Good luck I hope that you find a suitable boy :)
Thanks Moonbird, the girlies miss the little one that we lost so it would be great to get them a new friend. Hope SF can help :-)
Moonbird 23-03-2008, 11:25 :) I hope so too, what kind of rats do you have?
Top eared champagne 18 month female (Flicks) and black hooded dumbo 7 month female (Kitten)- they are cuties.
Moonbird 23-03-2008, 11:47 What is top eared? I used to have all kinds of rats when the kids were small, I had champagne and champagne hooded, a red eyed white, he was massive and a lovely gentle shy rat, a black hooded rescued rat...the only one that I was never able to handle, and a beautiful topaz boy.
I love rats, the only reason I don't have them now is because the just die to soon

Why do you want a male? Why not just another female? Do people really neuter rats?! We always had boys - they lived together perfectly happily, and it wouldn't have occurred to me to get any of them neutered. Just keep the sexes apart, and I'm sure you'll do just fine!
Just meaning not a dumbo- ears on top of head instead of down at each side. I know the main thing people can't handle is the short life span. The one I just lost was 18 months and it is really upsetting but I love how intelligant and affectionate they are which alot of people don't realise. I'v been ringing RSPCA all morning. I'm assuming because its easter they are not manning the phones and only have a few people feeding etc

Hi, the reason is I have always had females and I love them. They are so energetic and fun but I've heard that boys are really docile and often sit on you rather than run around and I just thought it would be nice to get one. I've heard that girls and boys can live very well together. People do neuter rats and I know that some do for the purpose of living with girls which is fine if they want to do that but I personally don't agree with it.

Aw, I always had boys (you do have to pick a gender then stick with it for obvious reasons!) but I loved our boys. I think it's an age thing - ours went from being all springy and curious to being older ones who didn't choose to move around so much. Even when we 'injected' the cage of remaining boys with young 'uns (also boys) it didn't make a difference - the young 'uns did their thing, the older ones did theirs...
Moonbird 23-03-2008, 12:37 I have had both males and females and they are both different and nice in their own right, I always found the girls to be really "busy" and not so cuddly, the boys have always been cuddlier, friendlier and more inclined to enjoy handling, I love that chattering sound they make when they are happy aww :)
I love bruxing too- its so sweet. It was comforting cause Bea (the one we lost) did it alot in her last days when I was cuddling her. Yep I love my girls but it would be nice to see what its like to have a cuddly boy. Will have to call RSPCA after Easter weekend and maybe they might have one.
Still no luck- does anyone know if the rspca were open to the public today cause I couldn't get through on the phones again.
hels1977 25-03-2008, 19:34 Im on the look out for one too :( Im in touch with Manchester Rat Rescue so if they have any or know of any I'll let you know. I'm not holding out much hope but I desperately want to try my "problem child" with a neutered buck as other girls send her into a frenzy of unrepressed rat-anger.
helenasq 25-03-2008, 19:40 Our male was neutered as we bought him as a girl (lol) with another, then a few weeks later, we had 13 rats! It wasn't fair to seperate them both and the female couldn't keep up with that amount of babies just once, never mind permenantley! Anyway, he is living a perfectly happy life with his girlfriend and 2 of his daughters now!

I was going to contact Manchester but I suppose I have my answer now. There seems to be a lack of rescue centres near sheffield which have rats. I didn't realise until I started looking. Peeps on Fancy Rats forum said there is a distinct lack of rat rescues nr sheffield, leeds etc- I thought i'd missed some. Hope you find yours too!
hels1977 25-03-2008, 19:59 Yeah I saw your thread on FR and put 2 and 2 together! I got 4 of my girls from Manchester rescue so I thought I'd try there on the off chance I could find one. They are hard to come by. :(
Purrball 25-03-2008, 20:05 You could try contacting some breeders as they sometimes have neutered bucks which are problem boys returned to them.
Also maybe drop Emma at Furry Friends in Surrey a line, her details are on the fancy rats forum, she sometimes has them in and there are people willing to bring them up here
Thanks for your help everyone. Its nic to see there are so many people on here from fancyrats
