View Full Version : What's on your needles? From March 2008 Wool4brains 22-03-2008, 10:24 It might be spring but it's been snowing this morning. What are you knitting - are you thinking ahead for summer with little lacy bits of nothing or looking out of the window and staying with thick wool? Wheezy 22-03-2008, 10:32 Well, I'm sticking with the chop sticks for now and knitting socks for the MIL's Birthday coming up early April and also a hat and scarf for Barnaby Bear who is holidaying with us for the Easter week. He has to go back to school after that, and has to have a reminder of his stay with us...... beansforyou 22-03-2008, 17:39 I'm still knitting the Vendetta socks (http://www.chocolateprincess.typepad.com/) I was knitting at peakwools, They are no longer going to be mine etiher, they are now my mums, because I was worried I was running out of yarn on the first one so I made them too small for me :suspect: My next lot I am going to learn toe up, so I can knit them till I run out, I want some longer socks. I've also bought the shawl pattern from the same blogger above ^ as I have seen it made using some of my yarn by another raveller, and need to make it for me :D peakwool 22-03-2008, 20:19 I have finished the blanket but have to sew in the ends. I am finishing the two Horace bears and I have started another baby blanket. I am part of the way through a pair of socks. Oh - and I have just finished the cushion cover so that is something else to sew up. maramcp 23-03-2008, 10:07 I have finished the Monkey socks in a linen/merino mix - lovely. I am currently working on a throw in six sorts of Colinette, and having fun with that, it is nice to snuggle under and this cold weather means it has doubled in size since Saturday morning! http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x67/maramcp/BriochethrowEasterDay2008001.jpg beansforyou 23-03-2008, 10:18 ooo they are lovely colours! I've just cast on my first toe-up sock, using Salvia Yarn, it was easier than I expected after everything I had read about it being tricky etc.. But I will finish the other pair too  Happy Easter everyone! daisycat 25-03-2008, 13:50 I've not been tempted to knit Summery stuff either as it's just too bleedin' cold. Here's my hot water bottle cover (http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll154/littlemiffybunny/DSCF0634.jpg) as a work in progress. (It's actually finished and has been handed over but I forgot to take its picture when complete:( ) (Hope the link worked as that was my first posted photo!) littlemissy 26-03-2008, 16:04 Elijah (http://www.prettyinpurple.com/images/foelijah) by Ysolda has just flown off my needles. A girl at work goes on maternity leave in a couple of weeks, I need to do the baby stuff first! I've got a lovely little pattern, but it was toe up with short row heel, and I could not make sense of the heel instructions, so I had to give up :) Ripped out and started on a trusty one, pictures to follow... turra21 01-04-2008, 21:08 A right angle at the moment!! I still have my first sock on the go, and last night I turned the heel. I knitted my Dad a fingerless glove and I'm suffering from second glove syndrome. I must do it soon, but I think it might be summer by the time I finish it him and then it will be too late. cryinglion 02-04-2008, 11:04 I've got a half finished sock too. It's been on the go for months now. The dress was the first thing I'd knitted in years - that was back in January - and when my 4yo saw me knitting he asked me to knit him some socks. I managed an inch - I hate dpns!! Since then I've done loads of other stuff and occasionally go back to the sock, but it will be a while before I finish the pair. Might come in for Rory. the sock so far http://www.flickr.com/photos/24217975@N02/2381465632/in/set-72157604349429013/ rachelg 02-04-2008, 15:01 At last I've got some pictures on flickr. Can I ask what pattern you used for the sun top? - I know some one who would love one too! And how delighted does Rory look?!! What a fab grin!!:D cryinglion 02-04-2008, 15:27 It's from a Patons booklet - '4 designs for children 1-9 years using 100% cotton 4 ply' I got it in the Wool Baa last week. This pattern is called violet and I really liked the little frill at the bottom. I had to adapt it to my yarn - got it from Peakwool and it looks like a strand of white alpaca twisted with a strand of thin boucle cotton in pastel shades. My daughter loved the yarn but I only had 2 skeins (120yds per skein) so had to find something that would work for her. It knits up more like dk (I did a tension square!!) so I cast on 147 sts on size 4mm needles for the frill, leaving me with 51sts for the body. I really like the way it turned out - more close fitting than the pattern. Rory's grin was short lived. He must have realised I'd put him in a dress! First thing I'd knitted in years and I couldn't resist. It was made for a friend's baby and should fit her in about 6 months, but I was desperate to see it on. I snapped a couple of pictures then he started crying - tears and snot all over the place, seriously endangering the frock. I won't be doing that again in a hurry. dccjb 06-04-2008, 10:33 I've got my plaster cast off my arm, so have picked my needles up & last night finished this 10 inch dolls outfit http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w145/jet172/dolls002.jpg This set is for a 17 inch doll http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w145/jet172/dolls006.jpg petraknits 06-04-2008, 13:30 atm I'm finishing the second of a pair of mittens for our little girl that's due next sunday! Becky B 10-04-2008, 19:03 Success with the short row heel! I looked at some other patterns and a couple of tutorials and managed to get my head round it. I think it didn't help that the original pattern wasn't written very clearly, and there was a mistake in it! Here's sock 1 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/munchythemouse/2404022448/) - it doesn't look like the picture on the pattern, I think the cuff looks disproportionately small for the size of the foot. I think I'm going to have to find a different pattern  By the way, how do you not get holes at the corner of the heel when you start knitting the cuff? Wool4brains 11-04-2008, 06:50 Did you pick up and knit a stitch in the corners (knitting through the back tightens it up a bit)? You can decrease them away on the next row. The other trick is stop working the heel when you unwrap the last knit stitch. It leaves one stitch still wrapped (you would have worked it on the last purl row). You start working in the round and then when you work back to the heel again you pick up and knit the wrap when you come to it. That means that the heel is two rows shorter than if you worked the last wrap and then knitted a return row and there isn't a two row gap at the corners. It looks like an ankle sock - wasn't that what you were after? Becky B 11-04-2008, 12:04 Yes, I meant in diameter rather than length. I don't think the ankle cuff will go over a baby's foot! I've made another one (different yarn) and picked up a couple of stitches at each corner - there's less of a gap and a wider cuff. Thing is, they knit up so quickly I can experiment a bit! I like this toe-up malarkey as well as the short row heel  dccjb 14-04-2008, 16:45 I've just finished these 3 this week http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w145/jet172/4.jpg http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w145/jet172/victorian.jpg http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w145/jet172/dolls003.jpg sherakapod 17-04-2008, 17:20 [QUOTE=dccjb;3387602]I've just finished these 3 this week http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w145/jet172/4.jpg where did you get this pattern from and what wool is it???? x dccjb 20-04-2008, 17:26 [QUOTE=dccjb;3387602]I've just finished these 3 this week http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w145/jet172/4.jpg where did you get this pattern from and what wool is it???? x It was off Ebay & the wool is double knit, the pattern is for a size 15 inch doll but the doll it is on is 17 inch thats why it looks a bit too small dccjb 20-04-2008, 17:30 Just finished these 2 doll outfits http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w145/jet172/bay003.jpg http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w145/jet172/matinee001.jpg Lucy-Lastic 20-04-2008, 19:15 They are finally done - its taken time mainly due to me being busy with other things but here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/19810784@N08/2428963022/) they are, my ALAiD socks. The yarn was dyed using Kool Aid dyes (black cherry, orange and lemon and lime I think) that I got as one of my gifts from my Secret Pal and dyed under instruction from Wheezy. I dont think they have come out too badly for a first dye attempt:) Wool4brains 20-04-2008, 19:23 Lisa - Were these the ones that previously had a cable pattern? If so I think you did the right thing in losing the pattern, the yarn carries the sock and it didn't need anything else. Is knitting your own yarn more pleasurable than knitting someone else's? (discuss in 200 words or less) gempud 20-04-2008, 19:32 Ooooh I REALLY like those Lisa! Lucy-Lastic 20-04-2008, 19:41 Lisa - Were these the ones that previously had a cable pattern? If so I think you did the right thing in losing the pattern, the yarn carries the sock and it didn't need anything else. Is knitting your own yarn more pleasurable than knitting someone else's? (discuss in 200 words or less) Yes these are the ones that were previously slippery socks - I hated doing those socks a lot and the yarn had enough of a pattern of its own:) Knitting these socks has been kind of interesting just to see how the yarn patterned as I knitted. Im not sure what I was expecting but the colours spiralled up the leg then did some interesting loopy type thing as it turned into the foot and then returning back to the spiral. I guess as it was a plain sock that I decided to knit in the end the fact that I had dyed the yarn did make it more interesting yes:D Thanks for the compliment aswell Gempud:D Wheezy 20-04-2008, 19:45 Loopy socks? (I went off on one and bought over 70 balls because it was just so cheap) I keep looking at the beanbag, mentally working out the shaping and deciding whether simple rib would result in me losing the will to finish it. Must knit faster... http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x67/maramcp/Greenstripyandbunny004.jpg http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x67/maramcp/Greenstripyandbunny006.jpg http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x67/maramcp/Greenstripyandbunny008.jpg carriewarr 02-09-2008, 15:23 I'm in heaven. I'm doing my fave dog coat design, in some of Peakwool's scrummy alpaca (three strands thick), using my lurrrrrverly new Lantern Moon needles from Jill. It's taking my mind off the fact that I can't feel my gob, having had a tooth out earlier today!! Cheers, Carrie maramcp 02-09-2008, 16:39 I'm in heaven. I have been medicating with yarn for quite some time!!:hihi: carriewarr 02-09-2008, 16:49 Poor Carrie. Thank heavens for knitting to distract us from pain. I have been medicating with yarn for quite some time!!:hihi: So, what would constitute Class A yarn vs Class B?!! :hihi: pixiepear 03-09-2008, 09:12 I need medication. Lots of it. Sooo not a happy bunny. Finished my feather and fan wrap in Kidsilk haze, lovely pearly cloud of softness. Used a picot cast off and was admiring my work, then decided it could do with being a little longer and started to undo the cast off so I could use up the rest of the wool. This is kidsilk, therefore a nightmare to undo, and it all went horribly wrong. I put the difficulty down to it being a picot edge and kidsilk. Got back a few rows and something was very very wrong. Started sweating profusely then the horrible truth dawned on me...I had unpicked the cast ON edge by mistake. By this point it was all too trashed to salvage. Considered treating it like a provisional cast on and knitting it back in feather and fan then realised the pattern would be pointing the wrong way. Beyond my skills to put right. I have now managed to frog some of it, in lots of small bits that i will find something to make with when i have gotten over it.:(:(:( Anyway, to cheer myself up i am going to go buy some more kidsilk today and start all over again. i keep reminding myself, "Its the knitting i enjoy" ergo its a good thing that i get to knit it all over again! mgknit 03-09-2008, 18:16 Oh! poor poor you.:(:(:( pixiepear 04-09-2008, 07:30 I have more kidsilk and I have started again! I do enjoy knitting with it as it is so soft and silky and cloud like, and its an easy pattern. If it had been something more challenging pattern-wise I think I would still be sniffling in the corner. Note to self: if something is finished, leave it alone... |
