Hi all

Im still trying to locate my birth mother - I closed a post 3 years ago when I was given bad information that she had died so here we go again....

This is what i have so far:

Josephine Turton Born early 1953

Mother - Amy Turton ( maiden name eagle )

Father - Joseph Turton ( william ??)

Mothers parents may have been Arthur Eagle / Amy Driver ?

Lived at 33 Errington Cresent Sheffield

Moved at some stage to 84 Aylward Road ( just round corner)

11th of September 1971 - Josephine gave birth to Stephan Turton who was adopted.

I spoke to a very helpfull lady from Aylward Road who remembers the following

Norma been with a dark skinned possibly caribean guy who fell off some scaffolding possibly on Sheffield town hall injurying himself quite badly - this was in all the papers she say's but i did not find any thing - She thinks Norma may have moved to where ever her partner was from as he was now in a wheel chair.

She thinks that Norma did come to Amy Turton (Eagles) funeral but doesn't remember Josephine attending

She said she thought Josephine may have died of TB

She also thought that Josephine had moved to Norwich to live with a boat builder and breed horses by the river - I spoke to the people at the oldest boatyard in Norwich who didn't remember anything helpful:

She remembers Joseph as a nasty drunk and Amy having suffered at his hands along with Josephine and Norma which was why they left home.

Amy had a best friend or sister living nearby who moved locally with a son who worked for a big bakery chain (Sunblest) and she was is still alive as of 2005.

At this point the trail goes dead - i have traced a couple of likely avenues to no avail - so i need to hear from you regardless how trivial you think it may be.

Did you go to school with her ??? Did you live next door ???

I believ she had an older sister ??? Anything you know for sure -Please respond....

I will pay a small cash reward (£100) for a sucessfull trace or specific information leading me to her.

And Josephine if you read this I have no hidden agenda's other than an overwhelming desire to meet my birth mum, I need nothing else....

Please help.

Best Regards

Stephan Turton

Well I hope that the op gets his wish, but it's a bit much posting all that personal info on a public forum. Things were different 30 odd years ago. This might be something that the subject of the post might have preferred be kept out of the public eye. :(

didn't stop you reading it tho' did it Ruby ? that's what the forums for - help and advice , how they gonna get it without releasing what info they have !!!

Obviously why you chose your user name! :)

What I'm saying is, is it really necessary to put so much personal information about people onto a public forum? I'm sure you wouldn't mind your families names and addresses and adoption details being posted, but the family concerned might.

Hi Stephan.

You really need those two marriage certificates if only to rule them out. You can apply for them online at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ They cost £7 each.

Have you also thought of going down the line of the sister who was born in 1939, thats assuming that she survived.

Searching by school all depends on this person's year of birth, as the education act brought big changes from grammar to Comprehensive, locally as well as a national raising of the school leaving age from 15 to 16.

Pre 1960's (1968?) the minimum school leaving age was 15. (although some kids at grammar schools did stay on through V th and VI th forms if they were going on to University)

I seem to remember, Myrtle Springs was originally Hurlfield Boys' School, pre 68, before it became Hurlfield Comprehensive.

Other "senior" schools locally were Norfolk School, Prince Edward School (at Manor Top, which did take pupils to age 15, pre '68) and Ashleigh. Slightly further away, but still near-ish enough to be a possibility were the City School at Stradbroke, and Birley/ Frecheville. (Newfield and Gleadless Valley schools are possibly pushing it a little.)

editing to say, if this lady was born in about 53, then she would have theoretically left school in approx 1968, aged 15 ish so the post-68 changes would not apply, OOps!

for the 1963 ish dates, if she was a 10 year old, at that time, she would most likely have gone to Arbourthorne School on Eastern Ave, Norfolk School,on Brimmesfield Road, or possibly Prince Edward Manor top, as the three nearest primary schools to Errington/ Aylward.

*note, in 1963, the address on Errington Crescent would have been a Prefab. That side of Errington Road, (Errington Cresc, Errington Close and Errington Avenue) was not built up until the late 60's.

Only the opposite side of the road, between Northern Avenue and Eastern avenue, was built on in the mid '30's (Apart from the Arbour Pub and the Ice-box - the carlton Cinema), so the Address on Errington is not even a starter to go looking there, or for neighbours who might have known the family.

There was also a Norma Turton marrying in Watford in 1957 ( sept Q) but she would have only been 18/19 then?

Another thing you could do is check the electoral rolls at the Local History Library to see when the family moved from the last known address. This gives a more tight framework of dates especially if they did move out of Sheffield.

use an online people finder agency...they are VERY good usually and I have tracked down a few names from the past that way.....be prepared to spend around £100 but you will get everything done for you, history current address, contact made on your behalf, etc

Hi Pondskater..... father was definately Joseph I have his and Amys Marriage reference if you want to get their certificate... let me know and I will PM you.

I was thinking about branches that may lead you to Josephine and would like to ask how sure you are about Arthur Eagle and Amy Driver being Amy's parent's, there are other suggestions raising their heads but don't want to go down any routes if you know for sure ??

No it certainly does not.... I know you will probably find it odd that I am taking an interest that seems to be looking back as opposed to looking forward at your birth Mum but in most cases finding living/or deceased people post 1901 is much harder..... Somewhere there will be a cousin... niece... uncle or somebody from a branch of your family tree who will know something that will move your plight forward...... we just have to keep trying... eventually we will find them...
